Tybee Island Sea Turtle News!

The summer season might be coming to an end, but Tybee Island‘s sea turtle season is still going strong! Our Nest 5 hatched Tuesday, August 16th, and the wonderful people with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project excavated Saturday evening. Excavations are open to the public, so there was a pretty good crowd there to watch and learn! There were no live stragglers or casualties found – just hatched eggs. Wonderful news! In all, 60 to 80 babies made their way to the waiting waves.

That’s not all either! Nest 6 hatched Wednesday, August 17th. It was a good thing Sybil from the Tybee Sea Turtle Project was there, too! The action began before the sun fully set, so she was able to make sure the babies made their way safely to the ocean. The Nest 6 excavation was held Sunday evening. Eighty-one hatched eggs were found, along with 11 undeveloped eggs, no stragglers, but on little guy that didn’t make it. That’s sad news, but not uncommon. Over all, the nest was a success!

If you’d like to learn more about Tybee Island wildlife, especially our beloved sea turtles, make sure to check out the Tybee Island Marine Science Center here on the island. If you can’t visit in person, check out their website! There’s a lot of wonderful information, and you can even plan out your visit ahead of time. We really appreciate all the hard working scientists and volunteers with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project, and we are sure the sea turtles do, too! Stay tuned, the season isn’t over yet!
