Oh What A Knight

Knight, a Guide Dog in TrainingOur boy has graduated!  Oh, what a Knight!

Knight is our most recent Labrador we sponsored for training as a Guide Dog.  Sandy, our wonderful puppy walker, shared that Knight has been placed with a professor at Columbia University.  We gave the professor a call and chatted about Knight’s new home.

During our phone conversation, the professor shared some of his life’s story and we knew this was just one of those times our paths were meant to cross.  His first Guide Dog had been named Knight, too.  His second Guide Dog is named Danny, just like our own Danny, a retired Guide Dog.  His Danny is now retired, too,  and the professor says it’s as if Danny knew it was time and that he welcomed Knight into their home.  Now, the professor and Knight head off to work at Columbia every day and Danny patiently waits to welcome them back home each afternoon.

The professor also shared that Knight even has a girlfriend, already.  There’s a blind student in one of his classes and she has a German Shepherd Guide Dog (Knight is quite smitten with her).  Everything the professor shared about Knight describes him just as we know him.  He’s a kind soul who loves to serve.  The professor says, “He’s my friend.  He’s my Guide Dog.  He’s my therapist.”

The professor asks to please thank everyone who had a part in Knight’s training and accomplishments.  Of course, Mermaid Cottages is proud and honored, but this includes each of you, too.  Proceeds from our pet friendly cottage rentals and from our Beach Bum Biscuits help us sponsor and support puppies to be trained as Guide Dogs and Service Dogs for persons with disabilities.

Oh, what a Knight.  May he have many wonderful days in service.
