Mermaid Cottages is celebrating the success of our programs to benefit Save The Elephants. The Elegance of Elephants: The Art of Conservation is our next fundraiser where you can also help us support wildlife conservation around the world. Over the next few months, we’ll be offering extraordinary paintings from our very successful arts community to our guests and supporters by raffle. Raffle tickets for each painting are $10 each. You can purchase as many tickets as you’d like up to our cap of 100 tickets per painting. Proceeds will help fundyour Save The Elephants programs throughout the year.

Our first painting to be raffled is this brilliant offering from Bellamy. Bellamy Murphy’s art has been displayed in many style and design books and magazines, including Southern Living, Coastal Living and Redbook. Her pieces bring the magic and the life of our Low Country life to many of our historic cottages and her art is always treasured by collectors.

This stunning piece is 12 x 12 and is instantly recognizable as a Bellamy creation. Bellamy’s piece will be available for raffle September 1 through September 30, 2015. Where does your good go? Within each of us is a capacity for doing good for others and when we do this good the rewards are great. This entry is part of a blog series about how our Mermaids Make A Difference. It’s not a platform for us to just talk about our good deeds and to pat ourselves on the back. It’s an opportunity to share our passions and to inspire others. We don’t all have to be passionate about the same things, but it is important for each of us to be open to helping others. Some people are fortunate enough to have lots of time and resources to do great things. Others with less resources can make just as much of an impact. We just have to do good when and where we see the need. Have you thought about it? Where does your good go?

One of the passions we are happy to share is our work to educate and preserve wildlife around the world. Lead by our Head Mermaid Diane, our Mermaids have donated time, monies and resources to fund education and to support conservation efforts around the world. The Elegance of Elephants: An Afternoon Safari Soiree

The Elegance of Elephants: An Afternoon Safari Soiree is the first production of our new sponsorship with Save The Elephants. Relentless poaching is threatening Africa’s elephants as their lives are taken for their tusks. Last year more than 30,000 elephants were illegally poached. This equates to one elephant every twenty minutes. Save The Elephants relies on donations from individuals and foundations to fund its work to secure a future for elephants.

On Sunday, May 17th, renowned artist Bellamy Murphy will host this very important fundraiser at her Isle of Hope home. This is the first time Bellamy has opened her home for such an event, so you can understand how important your passion and support is to our cause. Many supporters, conservationists and philanthropists have joined together to produce this inaugural afternoon safari soiree.

Original Bellamy Art presented by the artist with a portion of the sales going to Save the Elephants to combat the poaching of these elegant elephants and to sponsor a Kenyan girl to go to Secondary school for four years.

Puppies On Our Shoes

We have so much fun with our pet guests and our pet fosters and now we can even have puppies on our shoes! We meet the most wonderful heroes working in pet rescue communities and we are very excited to share our new relationship with Pennsylvania artist Jennifer Morrison. We met Jennifer through our Facebook friends at Scottie Sales – All items with Scotties on to buy & sell . Jennifer creates custom shoes with your favorite pets in mind. She most often works with Westies and Scotties, but she’s so talented she can create your shoes with your favorite pets, too. The best part? Jennifer donates the proceeds from her shoe sales to pet rescues, pet fosters and pets with medical needs.

Those of us working to rescue and foster pets in need are very familiar with Jennifer’s calling. “My husband says if I bring one more blankety-blank dog home I’m gonna be single, so me painting shoes is just a small way I can pay it forward to doggies. I always donate a pair to online dog rescue auctions and such…I had a pair raise over $100 for a rescue, which is fantastic! I have one pair in an auction right now for a lady who owns I think four scotties and she is in the hospital and needs help caring for her Scotties. I am always happily painting shoes for doggies!”

In most cases, Jennifer’s creations run about $25 plus shipping. Sometimes, mens sizes may run a little more, as well as some creations that require more time and supplies. You can chose silhouettes like we did or you can send Jennifer photos of your precious pets and she’ll create your shoes with their portraits.

Our shoes arrived in very short time along with the wonderful news of how our proceeds benefitted a new mommy and her puppies.
“She just had four puppies. She got pulled from the shelter and literally started having puppies in the car! Isn’t she adorable? This is one of the rescuers that got her.”

I can’t imagine a day when Mermaid Cottages would ever turn down a pet who needs to be rescued or fostered and now we can help rescue even more pets in need. Tybee ends October with the Big Squeeze when the Mobile Mamography Unit rolls into town on Thursday, October 30th! Once again, our Seaside Sisters want you to push ’em up and point ’em out.
