Mermaids in Our Midst: Bliss and Happiness Reign Supreme at Mermaid Cottages

We love hearing from our guests! Every note, email, and phone call warms our hearts. It’s especially touching when we get to hear from our regular guests that return as often as they can. It means a lot to us to hear why they keep visiting, and just what makes them come back. We recently heard from just such a guest!

“Dear Mermaids, we first stayed with Mermaid Cottages back in March 2007. We immediately fell in love with Tybee and the cottages on that very first trip and have been on a whirlwind tour of your homes ever since! We have stayed at Nora’s (twice), Sea Largo, Castaway, Breeze Inn, Dutton Waller (twice), Blue Heron and now most recently, Brooks Cottage. We feel like we are at home the minute we arrive. Every detail is so lovingly taken care of by Mermaid Cottages. The homes are sweet, spotless, and cozy.

Just some of the many beautiful Mermaid Cottages!

In all of these years and all of these homes, we have never once run into a problem or been dissatisfied in any way. As soon as we are “on island” we immediately begin to relax and breathe it all in. As I’ve mentioned to Diane before, bliss and happiness reign supreme there. Hectic lives are forgotten. It’s even difficult to discern what decade we’re in, as Tybee has a knack for transporting us to an era before we were even born…and make it feel completely natural to be there. Each home has its own story, its own soul. Our favorite is simply the one we’re in at the time. We have truly loved them all.

Brewster and Bella enjoy the breeze at Dutton-Waller Cottage.

Our pups, Brewster & Bella, begin to get excited the minute they see our Tybee overnight bags come out. They know they are in for a treat (literally!) as all the homes provide Beach Bum Dog Biscuits! They love the fenced in yards and screened in porches. They too are on vacation from their work as certified Canine Good Citizen aide dogs. They train hard and play hard, but when in Tybee, they go local and relax along with everyone else. They love taking walks around the island, meeting new friends, and napping under a palm tree. We are eternally grateful that Diane, the Mermaid Cottages staff, and thoughtful designers have taken the time to preserve this very special slice of Americana and in turn share it with folks like me. And we are truly blessed to live close enough to come and be a part of it as often as we do.

Mermaids for life, Melissa & Alan C.”

Brewster and Bella love the porch at Brooks Cottage!

Wow, thank you so much Melissa and Alan! It’s letters like this that warm our hearts and make us smile. We are so glad to know we are doing exactly what we set out to do…make your escape to paradise as perfect as possible! Thanks so much for sharing, and don’t be strangers. We hope to see you and the pups again real soon!

Mermaids in Our Midst: Jessica from New Mexico

Nothing makes us happier than hearing from you, our cherished guests. We had the best summer ever, and we can’t wait to see what autumn brings here on Tybee. We were so excited to read this lovely letter from Jessica, who recently visited our Crabby Jo’s Cottage all the way from New Mexico!

“We loved everything about Crabby Jo’s! The bedrooms were a bit small but that wasn’t a problem. There were three adults, one teenager, and two small children in our party (with numerous visitors during the day) and we all fit just fine. The extra showers downstairs were perfect for hosing off before venturing in after a day at the beach. While not “baby proofed” I felt comfortable letting my kids (age 3 and 11 months) wander freely about the home – it was very clean and well-kept. The beach, just steps away, was a dream – We even saw baby turtle tracks! The rest of Tybee Island was wonderful as well – we ate a number of local restaurants, visited numerous shops, hung out at the pier, and even purchased some kitschy art to bring back home to New Mexico (it’s a giant fish made out of scrap metal and an old boogie board!). We drove nearly 27 hours to visit Tybee (with two wee ones in the car) and I’d do it all over again. And I’d definitely stay at Crabby Jo’s again. Thank you for sharing your home with us!”

Thank you so much for sharing Jessica! We are overjoyed to hear that your time on Tybee Island was well spent! Twenty-seven hours is quite a trip, but we hope you can make it back real soon!

Have you stayed with us at Mermaid Cottages? We like nothing more than hearing from our guests. Please, don’t hesitate to let us know how your stay was! You can’t contact us by email at diane@mermaidcottages.com, or even leave your review on our Mermaid Cottages Facebook Page! Hearing from you, our Mermaid Family, just makes our day and we can’t wait to hear from you soon!

Memories of September 11th

Recently, Mermaid Cottages was lucky enough to have Amelia and her lovely daughter Anneka  stay with us at Inlet Breeze Cottage. We’ll let this very special blog post from Christine of Christine Hall Photography in Savannah tell the story…

September 11

originally posted Monday, September 12, 2011

“I do not think I will forget what I did on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. It is easy to detach when you do not know anyone who has died fighting for our country, but the longer it goes on the more and more real it becomes. I photographed this mother and daughter yesterday who lost their husband/father in November of last year and I really wanted to hug her and thank her husband for fighting for our country. Actually, I did hug her at the end, but it is really special and emotional to take these photos for them.”
Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos with us Christine!

Christine, thank you so much for allowing us to share your touching September 11th memories and beautiful photographs. And our hearts and thanks go out to Amelia and Anneka. Thank you so much for you bravery and for the service of your beloved husband and father. It is so very true, freedom isn’t free. Thank you for your courage and sacrifices and God Bless you both.

Brooks Cottage Guests

Here at Mermaid Cottages, nothing puts a smile on our faces quite like hearing from happy guests. It especially warms our hearts to hear from first-time visitors to Tybee- like Becky and Joe! They recently visited our island for the first time and stayed at Brooks Cottage.

“Just wanted to pop you a quick email to thank you for a truly wonderful vacation. Having never rented a house before, I wasn’t sure what to expect and I have to say that I was completely delighted with Brooks Cottage.

We usually go to Orlando for vacation and stay on-property at Disney in a military resort. I turn into the “Psycho Schedule Diva” and we run all over trying to fit in as much as possible to maximize our time in the parks. The husband complains that we return home more tired and stressed out than we were when we left. Add to that the complications of check-in, bag boys (and you’re not able to avoid them), parking fees, a very narrow balcony with 2 uncomfortable chairs, people stomping down the hallways all hours of the day and night, maid service that isn’t always convenient, worrying about whether the girls opened the in-room safe without telling us and forgot to lock it back, locking the safe and forgetting the combination, on-site restaurants that aren’t always serving the meal we’re ready to eat, figuring out the transportation schedule, waiting for the shuttle to the park, waiting at the gate, waiting for the shuttle to get back again, check-out, waiting on bag boys again… you get the picture.

This time, we didn’t feel we had to rush to get to check-in because the house was waiting for us to get there. Put the suitcases in the bedrooms, the make up case in the bath room and the groceries in the kitchen and we were settled. No waiting for a bag boy to bring our stuff up from the lobby and no worries about anything being missing. No worries about a maid coming in unexpectedly while we were catching a nap or a late afternoon shower. No worries about missing breakfast because we slept in. No worries for me about getting up at the crack of dawn and having to be quiet until the rest of the family was up… I made a pot of coffee and went out on the porch to greet the morning. No worries about Joe wanting to stay up later than the girls to watch something on t.v. since everyone had their own space. No worries about rain since there was a pool table and ping pong table on the ground floor. No worries for the girls about missing out on their internet time since we had WiFi access. We had all the comforts of home, all the privacy of home, with the ocean as our backdrop.

The stairs worried me because of the blood clots in my knee… didn’t think about that when we booked the house. However, by the end of the week, the additional exercise had worked wonders and I was going up and down with ease… not fast but steady… and the swelling behind my knee had gone down significantly.

Needless to say, we’ve fallen in love with Tybee Island and all the little places it has to explore. Where Georgia used to be our stop-over point, I think it’s going to be our destination for a while. And we’ll definitely be renting from Mermaid Cottages again. The girls had us driving all over the neighborhood looking for other Mermaid houses to see which ones we want to check out for the next time. We got home after the earthquake and before the hurricane totally relaxed and recharged.

Thank you again for one of the best vacations we’ve had in a long time!  ~Becky”

Thank you so much for sharing Becky! We are so glad  to hear that Tybee Island has stolen your heart. Your sweet email has us smiling ear to ear and we can’t wait to see you again. Don’t be a stranger, come back soon!
