This Saturday, December 31st, the year 2011 comes to a close and we ring in 2012! Here on Tybee, we love a good excuse for a party, and a new year is definitely a great one! Come ring in 2012 Tybee Style at the annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks show with us! The show starts at the stroke of midnight. Curl up in your beach chair or on a blanket to watch the spectacular fireworks display from the South Beach areas, or right in the middle of the fun at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. It’s always a fabulous show, so don’t miss it!
The fun doesn’t end on New Year’s Eve either. This year is the 12th annual Tybee Polar Plunge! Even better? This year, you can be a part of history as Tybee tries to set a new world record for the Largest Gathering of People Wearing Swimming Caps! Does Tybee Island know how to kick off a new year, or what?!

Hopefully, everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday. It’s such a wonderful time of year. It’s one of our favorites around here at Mermaid Cottages, so of course we love to deck the halls! Announcing the 2012 Tybee Polar Plunge. It’s the 12th annual celebration, and this year, everyone registered to participate will be counted in the Guinness World Records® Official attempt to break the world record for the “Largest Gathering of People Wearing Swimming Caps!” The current record is 546and was set on July 3, 2011 in Japan…but we just know Tybee can beat it! Please, join us January 1st at the Tybee Island Pier…you can be a part of history! Spots are limited, so make sure to register today! Participants are invited to wear crazy costumes as they jump into the waves, so let your imagination go wild! All event proceeds benefit the restoration of the Tybee Post Theater on Tybee Island. Participants will receive a 2012 Polar Plunge t-shirt and swim cap with registration.
PRE REGISTRATION for the Polar Plunge and World Record Attempt begins December 31, 2011 at 1-4 PM at the Tybee Round-about. Come pick up your plunge packet and get your swim cap and beat the rush! And, speaking of merry, if you are wanting to find seasonal fun this weekend…look no further! This Saturday, December 17th, the Tybee Christmas Caroling Trolley is coming! This is the 7th year for the event and it is sure to be a blast. Tickets for the trolley are on sale now and they always go fast, so hurry and pick your up today!
There will be holiday drinks and appetizers beginning at 5 pm at this year’s sponsor, The North Beach Grill, and the trolley departs at 6 pm, rain or shine. Flashlights are a good thing to have, too! Christmas is in full swing around here, and we couldn’t be happier! We sure do love decking our halls each year and adding to the festive spirit of Christmas here on Tybee Island. There’s nothing better than the holidays in paradise, that’s for sure!
We are so honored to say that, for the third year in a row, Mermaid Cottages was named the Best Decorated Business on Tybee! It couldn’t have happened without every single Mermaid and Merman in our group, so we want to send out a huge Thank You and Job Well Done to our entire Mermaid Cottages family for all their hard work making every single cottage merry for the holidays. The entire island does a fabulous job with decorating, so being honored this way really warms our hearts! Makes us all warm and fuzzy just looking at those! If the holiday lights and decorations haven’t sufficiently helped you to be jolly, don’t forget there are still loads of events happening on Tybee for the Holidays. In fact, this weekend is packed full of Christmas cheer!
The 3rd Annual Floating Christmas Parade is always a fun not-to-be-missed event at The Crab Shack! The festivities begin at 6:30pm with a Hot Dog & Chili Bar that is available until 7:30pm. The Hot Dog & Chili Bar will be FREE for parade participants with a Second Harvest canned food donation and $5 for spectators with a Second Harvest canned food donation. Participants will also receive FREE docking for Friday and/or Saturday night! The boats depart The Crab Shack Docks at 7:15pm and return at 8:30pm. Awards will be given at 9pm for The Best Decorated, The Most Lights, The Most Enthusiastic Elves, and The Longest Voyage. There will be music from 6:30pm – 10pm as well! Clear your weekend calendar and come celebrate the holidays while supporting a good cause!
Don’t worry, there’s still more fun to be had if parades aren’t your thing. Don’t miss the Candle Lantern Tour at Fort Pulaski December 9th and 10th or the Tybee Teddy Bear Tea Party December 11th at the Tybee Island Wedding Chapel! It’s finally here! Christmas time! You know what that means…it’s time for the annual tree lighting on Tybee Island!
Lights On for Tybee is this Friday, December 2nd, and it is always a fun time you don’t want to miss. The festivities start up at 6:30 p.m. at the Tybrisa/Strand Roundabout. Come on down to Downtown Tybee Island and enjoy musical performances, dancing, and entertainment! Take a stroll through our beautiful little paradise and shop the quirky mix of shops and restaurants, or just enjoy the Pier and Pavilion. You can make the season even more special by stopping by the “Park of Giving” in the Park of Seven Flags! Donations for the Toys for Tots, Tybee’s Rising Tyde Food Pantry, and The Milton Project will be going on there.
The Mayor’s Motorcade begins to evening of Lights On for Tybee, but the fun continues all weekend with the always-fabulous Tybee Island Christmas Parade and the Holiday Shop and Stroll! Complementary refreshments will even be available at participating locations through the evening. It’s a fun time for everyone, and we sure hope you make it out to Tybee to enjoy the holiday festivities! Joy us and kick off the holiday season right…Tybee style!
Registration for this event is ongoing online at the group’s website. Fees are $25 for adults (or $30 day of event) and $10 for ages 3 through 15 ($15 on the day of event). Survivors, volunteers, and ages 2 and under are FREE!
The fun will be centered at the Pier and Pavilion here on Tybee, and registration opens at 2:00 pm the day of the event. Come on down and get registered! The 1/4 mile Kiddie Run begins at 3:00 pm, followed by the Adult 5 K Walk/Run at 3:30 pm. There will be a Closing Ceremony at 5:30 pm, so make sure you don’t miss a minute!
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, in their own words, “is the only national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure.” You can read more about the group and their efforts at their website, just click the link above. Are you looking for something fun and family friendly to do this Halloween? Well look no further! Come to Tybee for your trick-or-treating! Trick-or-treat on Lewis Avenue is back again this year. Monday, October 31st, if the big day and Tybee is buzzing with excitement!
We hope you have your costumes ready because the fun begins at 6:30 p.m. and runs to 9 p.m. The Lewis Avenue Halloween event is attended by guest from all over the Savannah area and any assistance you can provide will help out both the island’s public safety staff and Lewis Avenue residents more than you know!! In preparation for the big night, there will be a barrel in the lobby at City Hall as well as at the Fire Station at Jones and Fifth Street. These barrels are where non-Lewis Avenue residents can donate candy to be given out the Tybee Island Fire and Police Departments. Please stop by and donate if you’d like!
Remember to be safe and look both ways while out haunting, no matter where you might be. We sure hope to see all you boys and ghouls on Lewis Avenue this Halloween!
