Tybee Turtle Trot 5k Beach Run is April 13, 2024, from 8 a.m. to noon!

It’s that time of the year again when we prepare for the upcoming sea turtle nesting season starting May 1st! Help support our Tybee Sea Turtle Project and our resident sea turtles, Westie and Ossie, by participating in our Tybee Turtle Trot 5K beach run fundraiser. Runners receive a t-shirt, a medal, and admission to the center after the race!

Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races

tybee island sea kayak racesThis Summer has been so much fun we just don’t want to let it end.  The Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races are coming up on September 12. 2015.  Thankfully, the weather stays very mild down here and that means more fun for everyone!  The races will shove off from A-J’s Dockside, 1315 Chatham Ave and proceeds will benefit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. There will be three races with staggered start times:

  1. Tybee River Race: 6 1Ž2 miles on the tidal river separating Tybee and Little Tybee Islands.
  2. Little Tybee Challenge: 8 miles, circumnavigates part of Little Tybee Island.
  3. Race Across the River for Gold Sponsors: Our Gold sponsors compete for a grand prize.

16th Annual Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races

16th annual tybee island sea kayak racesThe 16th Annual Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races are coming up soon, so plan to be with us to cheer our kayakers!  On Saturday, September 13th, we’ll all gather at AJ’s Dockside Restaurant to watch all of the race day launches.  This event is a benefit for the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, a non-profit marine science education facility offering hands-on programs for school and scout groups, as well as for the general public. The Tybee Turtle Project, which monitors loggerhead sea turtle nesting and hatching activities on Tybee, is managed by the Marine Science Center.

You can also contribute by purchasing tickets for the race day drawing for the Perception kayak, Werner paddle, & Astral PFD donated by Half-Moon Outfitters. Tickets are 1 for $5, or 3 for $10. Tickets are available at the Marine Science Center, at Papa’s BBQ and Seafood on Whitemarsh Island and at Half-Moon Outfitters on Broughton St. You do not have to be present to win.  All racers should sign up by September 7th …

Live Like A Local: New Marine Science Facility

Voluntourism in Tybee Island GAHere’s a wonderful chance to live like a local!  You’re invited to help develop the vision for the new Marine Science Facility for education and conservation!

Maria T. Procopio, Executive Director of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, invites you to join us in creating the design of our future facility to be located on Tybee Island’s north beach.  There will be public design sessions on June 28, 29, and 30 at the Shrine Club.  The project architects, Sottile & Sottile, will lead us all through the process . There are three opportunities for you to participate:

Thursday, June 28th

· 4 to 5 p.m. Kick-Off Presentation – an overview of the project

· 5 to 6 p.m. Design Work Session – give your feedback and/or take pen-in-hand and start designing
