Happy Little Cottages By The Sea

Cottage Charm, Coastal Calm

Our Guests with special talents

Well, I bet this is a conversation most of you don’t have every day. I love talking to our guests, be they future guests or repeat guests coming back to enjoy our island over and over again. I’ve purposely set up my vacation rental business so I have a terrific trio of ladies, Mary Lou, Teresa and Judy who handle all the daily housekeeping and operations ( along with the great help of our handy men David and Chris) and I have Peachy Keen Gary who handles all the book keeping and payment processing. Which allows me to do what I love the most, helping our guests find the perfect cottage and home for their visit. And Blog.

I ‘d been emailing with a very nice lady from Indiana ( we have a tremendous number of visitors from the midwest and we love it!) Kathy wanted to rent a pet friendly cottage with lots of quirky character and as we were discussing the right place, she shared that her pets were two well trained ferrets named Wendel and Bandit. Pets are pets to me and as long as they’re well behaved , I don’t mind any of them. Then Kathy and I started talking some more, seems that she found me when she googled haunted travels in Savannah, GA and Mermaid Cottages popped up as a place for pet friendly accomodations. Seems that Kathy and her husband spend their vacations traveling to places to experience ghosts and haunted places. They have their own website about their work and passion – visit http://www.ourhauntedtravels.com/ Not sure if any of our cottages are haunted, but since they are pet friendly, they fit the bill for Kathy!

Best of all and even better, when Kathy travels, she is happy to share her talent.

In her own words : “let me know please if there is anything haunted in Tybee …. If you know anyone having a problem with a spirit if they are interested we maybe able to help. Our service is free.
thank a lot, Kathy and John Sullivan”

So… Kathy and John will be here this fall and if any of my readers in the Tybee, Savannah area have a need for their free services, just email Kathy thru her website!

Flip Key, TripAdvisor , Techcrunch.com and Mermaid Cottages

What does Mermaid Cottages, Techcrunch.com (one of the premier Tech websites in the world )and Tripadvisor.com ( the number one website for reviews on travel world wide) have in common? The answer is http://www.flipkey.com/ . Many of you will remember that a few months ago we started to invite our guests to review their visit to Mermaid Cottages. We knew that not every review would be a 5 star experience, but we wanted honest feedback on each visit so we could strive to improve our homes on a daily basis. We’ve had a great response from our visitors and these reviews are posted beside each home so potential visitors can see what others have said about their visit. I also have a chance to comment on any reviews to give updates and feedback.

Well last week, www.techcrunch.com featured an article about www.tripadvisor.com becoming a major partner with flipkey.com AND the two sites they refer to in this on line article was doodlebug cottage and mermaidcottages! We had over 38 visitors from all over the world to our website as a result of this shoutout on just the first day alone! And more have logged on each day since to see what mermaidcottages.com is all about!
Read this article and then click on where the examples are “here and here” to see what folks from all over the world saw. And even better- we can start to expect even MORE EXPOSURE from being part of flipkey.com as tripadvisor starts to promote the site even more. Very, very exciting stuff!!! Here’s the article that was on line:

TripAdvisor is in an expansive mood. In July, it acquired two small startups, VirtualTourist (user-gen travel guides) and OneTime (booking price comparison). And today it announced a majority investment in FlipKey, a guest review site for vacation home rentals. The amount of the investment was not disclosed.
FlipKey launched only last March. It covers 50,000 vacation rental properties in the U.S., which CEO TJ Mahoney says represents a $60 billion market. So it is a pretty big niche. FlipKey aims to become the reputation management system for vacation home rentals. Property owners can take review data in the form of a widget and place it on their sites or property listings. (See examples here and here).
TripAdvisor plans to include FlipKey reviews on its own network of sites, which attract 12 million visitors a month in the U.S., and 28 million worldwide, according to comScore.
Mahoney previously was a co-founder of Compete.com. Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire is an advisor to the startup. FlipKey raised $500,000 last December from angel investors, including Allaire, Care.com CEO Sheila Marcelo, and venture capitalist Nick Beim of Matrix Partners. “

Joe’s Grill At Doc’s Bar!

We love it when one of our friends is considered a local Tybee Character ( for my long time readers you’ll remember my April Blog about how you know when you’ve crossed that line and you yourself have become “local” flavor…) Joe , as in the Commodore of the Tybee Bomb Squad, Day time bar tender at Doc’s bar and now Sunday Grill Chef at Doc’s is on duty this Sunday . Here’s the press release that was sent out to the locals today via the electronic coconut telegraph:

“It’s Joe’s Grill At Doc’s This Sunday

Joe will light the grill at 12:30. Come on out for a day of food and fun with one of Tybee’s best characters. Food will be served until he runs out or passes out. We are taking bets on which one will come first.

On the Menu
Joe’s famous “Tropical Storm Fay Burger” – A wind storm of flavors.
Joe’s “Get Out Of My Bar You Weenie Hot Dog” – Size does matter.
And…………………
A special “Surprise Sandwich” will also be served.

Also………………………
There is a rumor that Sunday night we will have “Peggy’s Homemade Lasagna”.
(Whose home it is actually made in we are not too clear on that yet.)”

Just in case you haven’t been to Doc’s Bar, Sunday should be the day you come by. Fun, Great Food and yes- local flavor and characters.

We’re ready for Tropical Storm Fay!

Thank you Kay Petty for sharing this picture. With all the rain we’ve been having with the tropical depression ( don’t get us wrong,we need and want this rain…) we all need these shoes!
Thanks to all of you who’ve called and emailed worried about the storm, we’re fine. Power went out earlier today for several hours, lots and lots of rain, but no flooding and no problems at any of the cottages.
