The Sound of Music Sing-a-Long at the Hollywood Bowl

I am here in LA visiting my sister to celebrate her 50th birthday. We have all kinds of plans – First up — we are going to the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow night (Friday) for the Sound of Music Sing-a-Long.
The Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world and has a seating capacity of just under 18,000. It is the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922 and also has seen such luminary artists as Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Elton John.
Tomorrow night, the Bowl is transformed into the world’s largest outdoor movie theater. It’s a wonderful evening and only happens once every year or so. The Sound of Music is shown on a huge screen and everyone sings along to every song. We are given goody bags upon arrival filled with props (hey – afterall, this is LA) to use during the movie. A favorite – when Capt. Von Trapp kisses Maria for the first time, we have poppers to pull (you know – those little poppers people pull a string and confetti shoots out). Imagine 18,000 people singing together in the Hollywood Hills while confetti flies everywhere.
I can’t wait to experience the fun! What a great way to start my sister’s birthday celebration!!!
So look for pictures of our evening…… And after that — it’s off to Vegas! VIVA LAS VEGAS….. And although they say “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” — won’t apply to us. Our Big 50 birthday celebration will be posted all over my blog!

My 3 Very Southern Friends, their Blogs & why I love them!

I’m still pondering why I love Blogs and Blogging so much. It may be why I love reality TV shows, politics and people watching. It’s your chance to see people at their best. And I always believe we will see people this way if we try. I also just love to Blog. It’s my chance to be creative, to recap my life – as much for me to see what I’m doing and accomplishing as to share with others about life on the island.

I also love the fact that at mid life, I’m learning something new! I’ve always been ADD and school was always very hard when it came to studying, tests and the drama of grades . However, at this middle stage of my life, I’ve found great joy in the learning of how to set up blogs, social networks, posting pictures, searching the internet for info to enhance my blog ( the magic of youtube.com ) even how to use my hand me down digital camera ! I truly am amazed by this skill I’ve acquired at 52 almost 53 years of age!

Another part of the learning is the fun of discovering other people’s Blogs, both friends and complete strangers! Here are the blogs of three people I know, admire and think are just great!

Take some time, read about their adventures and enjoy. You won’t be bored, I promise!

Back Home and a GREAT CAUSE to support!

Back home from the mountains… and we’re having beautiful weather- is this the calm before the storm or just the fact that fall is just around the corner? Blue skies, low humidity, slight winds blowing… no crowds…. wonderful!!! To those of you trying to decide if you postpone your trip to the Island or come on down, just keep watching Jim Cantore and The Weather Channel to see where Hanna is going to hit. Looks like she’ll be heading towards our friends in Myrtle Beach, but we’ll receive some still much needed rain- but remember– a rainy weekend at the beach is always better then a rainy weekend anywhere else! BTW- another man we love and adore- that Jim Cantore! He actually explained on NPR today that he now wears goggles to protect his eyes while on camera and reporting from a hurricane area. He was over the vanity of trying to look good on TV. How great is that! Shaved head AND wears goggles! If you want to have a little fun, google “Jim Cantore wearing goggles” and read some of the comments . Seems everyone loves the fact he’s now wearing goggles when the weather is so bad!
Betsy- one of the owners of Tybee Tides and Fish Camp Cottage, has emailed me a great cause to support- supporting reading to children from low income families. If you’re interested, read Betsy’s info and then click on to support the reading effort.
” Since 1993, Jumpstart has been bringing at-risk preschool children and caring adults together in intensive, year-long relationships, to build the vital literacy, social, and emotional skills children need to thrive. The fact is that most children in low income communities have few, if any, age appropriate books in their homes. Children from low-income communities typically enter kindergarten with one fourth the vocabulary of their middle-income peers. Each Year, for one day Jumpstart celebrates reading by trying to break a record for the most children and adults reading together at the same time. And as a bonus, each child then gets that special book to take home with them and start their own library! A gift that keeps on giving, each time it is taken out and looked at. This year’s event is October 2, 2008 and this year’s book is Corduroy.I know you are constantly being asked to give! And of course I am going to ask you again. By participating in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record you can help us provide copies of Corduroy to the children who need books the most. You can also buy the special edition book for yourself, to give to children in your life. Please help me reach my goal. And read to a child every chance you get! Thanks so much,Betsy “

Mermaid Manor, the real life version

Do any of my regular readers remeber how perfect Mermaid Manor looked for the Tour of Homes in June? Perfection, clean, organized, the toast of the tour? Well, this is the real life version when daughter Katie comes home, the dogs are in bed sleeping with her and life is how it should be, messy, real and honest. Danny is jumping from the window seat onto the bed, Max is happy on the window seat just watching everything. Katie is now back at work in the mountains of North Carolina and the home is back to Tour of Homes perfection, but I do hope she’ll come home again soon! Neatness is over rated when the alternative is having your family back under the same roof.

Our Guests with special talents

Well, I bet this is a conversation most of you don’t have every day. I love talking to our guests, be they future guests or repeat guests coming back to enjoy our island over and over again. I’ve purposely set up my vacation rental business so I have a terrific trio of ladies, Mary Lou, Teresa and Judy who handle all the daily housekeeping and operations ( along with the great help of our handy men David and Chris) and I have Peachy Keen Gary who handles all the book keeping and payment processing. Which allows me to do what I love the most, helping our guests find the perfect cottage and home for their visit. And Blog.

I ‘d been emailing with a very nice lady from Indiana ( we have a tremendous number of visitors from the midwest and we love it!) Kathy wanted to rent a pet friendly cottage with lots of quirky character and as we were discussing the right place, she shared that her pets were two well trained ferrets named Wendel and Bandit. Pets are pets to me and as long as they’re well behaved , I don’t mind any of them. Then Kathy and I started talking some more, seems that she found me when she googled haunted travels in Savannah, GA and Mermaid Cottages popped up as a place for pet friendly accomodations. Seems that Kathy and her husband spend their vacations traveling to places to experience ghosts and haunted places. They have their own website about their work and passion – visit http://www.ourhauntedtravels.com/ Not sure if any of our cottages are haunted, but since they are pet friendly, they fit the bill for Kathy!

Best of all and even better, when Kathy travels, she is happy to share her talent.

In her own words : “let me know please if there is anything haunted in Tybee …. If you know anyone having a problem with a spirit if they are interested we maybe able to help. Our service is free.
thank a lot, Kathy and John Sullivan”

So… Kathy and John will be here this fall and if any of my readers in the Tybee, Savannah area have a need for their free services, just email Kathy thru her website!
