Spring Sojourn to Midway, Georgia

Friday was a perfect spring day and I was lucky enough to spend time with the very famous Craft Artist, Pam Martin in Historic Midway! This small southern community is about 30 minutes south of Savannah right off of Highway 17 ( the old coastal road before I 95 was built). Pam, her husband Joe and their beloved Golden Retriever Cobaka, live in a beautiful home Joe built right on the marsh . The town is covered with pink, coral and white Azalea plants and was breath taking! Pam’s studio is right next door to their home with the docks in front and a view that goes on for miles.

Pam is one of the most energetic people I know- in the course of 5 hours we had lunch, toured her art studio to see what was new, drove all thru Midway to shop her favorite junking stores and even went Letterboxing!. Lunch was all homemade by Pam and included cinamon raisin bread, grilled chunky chicken salad and of course her dark, gooey chocolate brownies… the only thing missing was her usual Peach Ice Tea- but hey- she couldn’t get to everything! Pam and Joe also make world class shrimp salad from Shrimp they catch right off their dock. She showed me her newest creations- Mermaids, Fish and Shrimp all made from dried goards and painted bright and cheery colors. HGTV was also there recently and will be featuring Pam and another dear friend and famous artist “Very Jeri” Gale on an upcoming show about American Crafts people. We’ll let you know the show date!

Be sure to check out Pam and Very Jeri’s art while visiting Tybee at Atlantic Beacon Gallery ( www.atlanticbeacongallery.com ) You can also visit her blog www.pamelamartindesigns@blogspot.com Pam loves to blog and will fill you in on her daily adventures which will astound you! Read all about our letter boxing experience on her blog. I’ll keep you up to date as I discover the Tybee Letter boxes! Who knew such treasure were out there!

The Today Show and Tybee Island!

Thursday morning I received a very excited phone call from one of the memebers of our housekeeping team to tell me Mermaid Cottages was on The Today Show! Turns out the story was about the top 5 best places to retire and Tybee Island was one of the top 5! Even better- the video they used during the segment showed pictures of our various cottages: Maddie’s on Jones, The Shrimp and The Key Lime Parrot. The background- about a year ago we recevied a call from Good Morning America who wanted to do a story on Affordable Family Vacations. Barbara Corcoran- a nationally known real estate expert-had heard about Tybee and wanted to include our Island in the story. We sent her some video on Tybee and our cottages and Barbara used the video in the story and on her website www.barbaracorcoran.com. Some of the same video was used in this story . To see the actual video- please go to “Fun Stuff” on our website and then to Media. You can watch Ann Curry learn all about Tybee!

Mary Kay Andrews on the NY Times Best Seller List!

BIG NEWS! Our dear friend ( and very famous author) Mary Kay Andrews just found out her brand new book- Deep Dish- has made the NY Times Best Seller List! She’ll be on the new list which comes out next week. This book is in Mary Kay’s classic fun style and tells yet another story of a Southern Woman TV Chef and her adventures. She spent time with Paula Deen to research the main character so you know this book will be great! Mary Kay wrote much of her book on Tybee Island and stayed with us at various cottages ( The Shrimp, Key Lime Parrot and Flip Flop Cottage to name a few) and even thanked Mermaid Cottages in the book for providing her with a cozy nest while she was writing. If you haven’t read any of her books- be sure to pick up and read Savannah Blues, Savannah Breeze and Blue Christmas- a trilogoy of books about characters who live , work and love in Savannah and Tybee. And even more fun- be sure to join us next January for our third annual Savannah Breeze Weekend which is the ultimate girls weekend here on Tybee. For more details on both Mary Kay and the weekend go to www.marykayandrews.com and www.savannahbreezeweekend.com
