Have you ever been to the beach with little ones? Trips to the beach with toddlers can have more than their share of adventures.

Tybee is such a great place for the whole family to enjoy.  However, with a few tried and true tips, your beach trip can be more pleasant than ever!

GO EARLY: Lifeguards are out as early as 8:30am on most days especially weekends. Plus, toddlers are at their best right after breakfast with plenty of time before the napping yawns begin.  Also, the heat is at it’s lowest and will keep them from getting over heated before lunch!

18th Street:  There are many entrances to the beach.  If you are going with very small children, 18th Street is the place for you.  It’s location includes bathrooms right next to its boardwalk, a lifeguard station right at the beginning of the soft sand, and almost always, a tidal pool. Tidal pools are great for the very small kids, the first timers and the boundary challengers. No worries about waves taking the toys back with them to the ocean!

It’s Dog Week!

Mermaid Cottages is known for most of their homes being pet-friendly vacation rentals. Why? You might ask.

What you may not realize is that we are very passionate about saving unwanted dogs by fostering them until they have a forever family.  Most of these furry friends are on their last leg at kill shelters and Mermaid Cottages is a big advocate for getting these dogs adopted before this happens.

Lessons Hershey Taught Us

Hershey our large Chocolate Standard Poodle came into our lives after we bought and renovated a Tybee Cottage near Savannah, Georgia.

We planned to rent it and decided to make it pet friendly to give us an edge in the rental market. We had friends and family that struggled to find pet friendly vacation accommodations so we felt it would help in renting our cottage. Diane Kaufman head Mermaid from Mermaid Cottages told us that she had positive experiences with renting to pet owners and she agreed it would help us widen our cottage’s appeal. She told us we needed a name for the Cottage and we combined the pet angle with our love for Kayaking. So Paws & Paddles it was. Diane and the Mermaids took us under their wing.

What Better Place to Fish than the variety of hot spots on Tybee Island, GA?

There are great fishing spots all over our 3 mile island. You can catch many things from Bass to Trout to Sheepshead to Bream to Catfish.  Just remember, be sure to have your fishing license on you at all times!

At the entrance of the Lazaretto Creek Bridge is a great pier that sits directly across from the shrimp boats that bring in all the delicious seafood our restaurants serve.  The sunset is beautiful and there’s nothing quite like watching the dolphins jumping through the waves made by the shrimp boats as they come home from a days work.
