Do you have a passion for helping people or the community? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of others? There are many ways to experience voluntourism on Tybee Island.

Robin-Lynne-1Tybee Island Beach Sweep If you want to get down and dirty, just join the island locals for a Tybee Beach Sweep in their efforts to keep our beaches gorgeous. We meet before sunrise to get started and walk the beaches cleaning up any trash dropped on the beach.  This aligns with our eco-friendly goals of protecting our wildlife and the natural settings of the dunes and sand.  We have a great time and what’s better than seeing the beautiful sunrise on the beach? Our next International Coastal Cleanup is September 20th.

Y'all Come Inn- Paula Deen in Savannah“Y’all Come Inn was spacious and had everything we needed. We loved being fairly close to the beach and in between North and South Beach. It was truly a relaxing week for us. We were looking forward to a great meal at Lady and Sons, but we were even more amazed at their wonderful staff. They take real good care of you and the peach cobbler with ice cream on top was to die for! My wife, sister in law, and daughter had a field day over the shopping at Seaside Sisters! We also loved eating at Coco’s Sunset Grille.”~Guest, Bob Petty

Petty Family-Celebrities in Savannah“The whole experience with Mermaid Cottages from start to finish was “Johnny on the spot” with info and everything else. The privacy and relaxation that comes with renting a cottage from Mermaid Cottages is completely worth it! We can’t wait to come back.”~Guest Bob Petty

Senior Friendly Activities on Tybee Island

Age is no factor when it comes to having fun! Tybee Island, Georgia offers a myriad of senior-friendly activities. Let’s explore them, shall we?

We have a variety of historical monuments and museums that will surely catch your eye, but if it’s romance you’re looking for, we would suggest a sunset walk along the beach. There are also beach swings placed conveniently around the island where you and your sweet pea can sit for a spell and watch the waves crash along the sandy beaches.

If you’re worried your legs may get tired walking along the sand, no problem! Stop by the Tybee Island Ocean Rescue Headquarters and rent a beach accessible wheel chair, made available by the City of Tybee. The best place to wheel onto the beach is at the 18th Street boardwalk where there is an extended walking tarp making it easier to get across the soft sand.

Enjoy a long walk or ride on the beach, but don’t forget the sunscreen and water bottle! We love our seniors, so if you have any questions while at the beach our local lifeguards will be happy to lend a hand.

Transportation on Tybee Island

Transportation on Tybee Island is very unique in that they offer many different varieties.

vintage-bike-on-beach 2Adult BikeBecause the island is only three miles in diameter, the best mode of transportation is your own two feet! Most of the shops, restaurants and attractions are all within walking distance of one another. Please note, there are two ends of the island, North and South, and both have their own personality. If you’re not a fan of walking, no worries! Tybee takes much pride in providing a bicycle friendly community for locals and visitors.

Take a morning bike ride down the beach at sunrise or an afternoon cruise through the local parks and trails. If you’re adventurous, you may want to try out the six-mile long McQueen’s Island Trail, aka Old Railroad Trail, along US-80. Watch the beautiful sun set across the open waters and you will find yourself in awe. It’s the perfect end to a great day on Tybee!
