Cottage Couture

by Cottage Cheese

Cottage Couture.  Is it just me or does it happen to you, too?

Sometimes, when I’m strolling along the avenues on Tybee Island, admiring the candyland of cottages along the way, I get the distinct feeling that some of the quaint little homes are winking at me.

Now, I know y’all are thinking that Tybee is well-known as a drinking island with a fishing problem and that I must be pie eyed on a walk of shame, but I’m as sober as a judge.  I really do feel as if some of the cottages are calling me.  “Come here, little boy (yes, no matter how old I get I see myself as just a lad).  I’ve got something to show you.”  Come closer. Wink. Wink.

It’s those gorgeous shutters with the island motifs and colors that beckon me.  They say that the eyes are the windows into the soul and I think it’s pretty much the same for little houses.  What was once a device to keep out the sun, the wind and other elements is now a calling card of hospitality. …

Hey There, Calendar Girl!

A girl should be two things: Classy and Fabulous! quote by THE Coco Chanel.

Friend of Mermaid Cottages, Miss Janice over at Social Graces…Southern Style, wrote the cutest blog post about her famous Yorkie, Coco Chanel.
Coco was one of the gorgeous pooches chosen to be featured in the upcoming Beach Bum Biscuits note card collection by the always Fabulous Fifi Flowers!
Mlle Coco says, “Moi is so honored to be chosen  and am humbled by the outpouring of love and support from my family and friends!”
Proceeds from the Fifi Flowers Beach Bum Biscuits  pet notecard collection sponsor and support puppies to be trained as Guide Dogs and Service Dogs for persons with disabilities.
It’s not unusual to hear the words Priss Pot Diva and Coco in the same sentence, but we say you are a Divine Diva, darling Coco!

Rosie’s Review

One of the most popular pet friendly Mermaid Cottages in our candyland of vintage and historic homes is Memories At The Beach.

Recently, we heard from a very special guest that visited us and she sent us her photo to share with everyone.

Rosie is a  four year old labradoodle from Newnan, GA and she and her humans spent a few days at MemoriesThis one story cottage received a GREEN makeover courtesy of its wonderful owners.  The renovation was based on “reduce, reuse and recycle” concepts.

All of the rooms have ceiling fans to circulate the air inside and all the light bulbs are compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

Memories At The Beach features all “Energy Star” appliances including the high efficiency washing machine, dryer, refrigerator and custom bamboo blinds have been installed throughout the house.

The energy efficient water heater delivers hot water on demand, but the real show stopper is the fabulous outdoor shower that is solar heated!  Talk about Socially Responsible Vacations with an exotic twist!

One thing that did not change during the update was the original Mamie Eisenhower Pink bathroom which was the color of choice for many homes built in the 1950s.

The cottage’s facade is beautifully framed within a canopy of grapefruit, orange, fig and key lime trees.  It faces East on a beautiful quiet street which makes it a perfect location for watching the island birds that live here.

Rosie loved the cottage and all its thoughtful touches, but being a real nature gal she particularly enjoyed her fresh supply of all natural Beach Bum Biscuits and she really appreciated the complimentary guest pet tag that let everyone know she was an honorary Mermaid during her stay!

The Tennessee couple that owns this magnificent island getaway has filled it with love and inspiration and they hope that you’ll be sure to come often to create your own magnificent Memories At The Beach (Click here to take a walk through tour).

BEACH SWEEP: LABOR Of LOVE

Mermaid Cottages announces our next BEACH SWEEP!

It’s a true Labor of Love, so join us on Sunday, September 4, 2011 from 9 AM-10:30 AM.

Please meet at the Tybee Visitors Information Hut near the Tybee Pier. Gloves, trash bags and trash grabbers will be provided.

Mermaid Cottages offers our guests the opportunity to combine their vacation travel with volunteering on Tybee Island. Participating in various local projects alongside our Mermaids and Mermen allows our guests to “live like a local” and gives you a chance to give back to our coastal community.

Keeping our island neat and clean isn’t just important to us, but for all of our wonderful wildlife and beach ecology, too.

It’s LABOR DAY weekend, so come be with the Mermaids (and Mermen!), residents, guests and friends and let’s Keep Tybee Tidy!

It’s VOLUNTOURISM at its best!  Y’all comin’?
