National Leave Your Car at Home Day!

Today is “National Leave Your Car at Home Day” and as usual little ole Tybee is ahead of the rest of the world! We always encourage our visitors and guests to park their car and ride bikes for everything you want to do while on Tybee. Bike riding- and remeber we’re talking those good old fashioned big seat beach bikes- is the absolute best way to not only be “green” and save on those crazy gas prices, but also get exercise and see Tybee at her best. Some of our recent guests sent us pictures of their bike riding AND taking that afternoon nap on the porch after a long morning of bike riding! And don’t forget if you want to rent bikes, call or email our favorite bike man Tim O’Neill http://www.timsbeachgear.com/ for everything you need. He delivers right to your front door!

Sea Turtle Season is Here!

We love our sea turtles! SeaTurtle Nest season has begun on Tybee ( and the entire Georgia Coast) and we’re looking foward to a record year. Several types of sea turtles nest on Tybee, Loggerhead Turtles have already arrived on other Georgia Sea islands and we’re looking foward to our first nests here soon!
Several of our team joining in the 2008 Tybee Turtle Trot to help raise money for the sea turtle project. This is our picture before we walked three miles on the beach to raise money. Mermaid Cottages also sponosored a Life Size Turtle which sits in front of the Tybee Marine Science Center and this is what we’re sitting in front of.
For more details on what you can do to encourage more nests on Tybee, or to sponsor a egg or nest, go to http://www.tybeemarinescience.org/ and then go to Sea Turtle Project.
We’ll keep everyone updated when we have our first nest!

Bird watching from Doodlebug Cottage!

cardinal at bird feeder

Doodlebug Cottage sits right across the street from Horsepen Creek Marsh and Tidal Creek. The bird watching is incredible ranging from herons to song birds. Another great experience is you can hear the oysters clacking during low tide and sometimes hear and see the dolphins when they come back to feed in the marsh. The screened front porch stretches across the entire front of the home with lots of comfortable seating. Sunsets are the daily show- and it’s free!

A special thank you to Dick and Jane who were our “snowbird” winter guests at Doodlebug and took these pictures for us. They’ll be returning again next winter and we’ll look forward to more pictures from Dick!
And here’s a reply from another Doodlebug Cottage regular and bird watcher as well as a Tybee Local AND real estate professional in case you’re ever looking for your own piece of paradise!
“Great photos. I hope they had a visit from the osprey while they were there. It begins when all the little birds start making tons on noise to the point you know something is happening outside. As you go on the porch to inspect the clatter you can see the little song birds dive bombing the osprey as he (maybe she) lights from the top of one pine tree to another looking for food in the creek. The biggest thrill is when you watch long enough to see the dive from the tree top to the water, then out with a big fish and a trip back home to Horse Pen Creek tree tops for dinner or maybe to feed the nest. I think Osprey’s love 12th street. Many times we have been sitting on the beach to see one dive into the ocean and come out of the water with a fish and fly right down 12th street with its dinner dangling from it’s clutch. Ain’t TYBEE grand. ”

Danny the Cup Cake eating dog….

Danny in the front yard of our home- Mermaid Manor. He loves to people (and dog watch) as our many island visitors stroll or ride their bikes down Chatham Ave. The best part of spring season is so many of our visitors are back and all riding bikes! We encourage all our guests to ride bikes while here on Tybee. What a perfect way to to be Green, exercise and mix and mingle with our locals and other visitors and enjoy Tybee at a slower pace. We recommend one place to rent your bikes – Tim’s Beach Gear and the BEST place to rent bikes on the island if you don’t want to bring your own. Tim will personally deliver your bikes to your cottage.

The sign on the gate was created especially for Danny and Max ( my two labs) by Lori Prell, a terrific regional artist based in Cocoa Village, Florida. The dogs are enjoying their “boat drinks” and the sign reminds people to close the gate behind them so the boys don’t decide to charge out the gate and go visiting. Lori’s website the Black Dog Gallery and she will custom design a sign for your home.

That’s Max at the top of the stairs by the front door being the good dog that he is.

Danny is always ready to bark and dash out the gate , Max is just happy to be alive and be a dog on Tybee….

Thank you Alan Rubin for taking these pictures of the dogs and the cottage!
