"Eat Catfish and be Somebody!" My road trip to Middle Georgia

Now that the fall season is here and mostly weekend visitors and as long as my blackberry, cell phone and lap top are working, I can hit the road to visit friends and family. With the wonder of technology, I’m able to help our guests from anywhere and that place last week was Columbus, Georgia! I used to come here regularly with my Marriott career, the insurance company AFLAC was one of my National Accounts and I would visit my customers . Great company, great people and still a stock I’d recommend to anyone!
I’m here this time visiting my very dear friend Donna. Donna is a retired school principal and one of the best people I know. That’s Donna in her garage with her little dog Fripp and her wall of sayings. The first one she found said “Martha Stewart doesn’t live here” and then the collection grew. She’s also a true GRITS- “girls raised in the south”. As Donna has told people during my visit, “even though Diane has been in the south for 20 years, she’s still not from around these parts.” True! So here’s a recap of my adventures.
It’s about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Savannah to Columbus. You’re on Interstate 16, for about 90 minutes , then get off and are on local roads. Beautiful! Here’s what I saw along the way.

  • Lane Southern Orchards, Ft Valley , Georgia. The mecca for peach lovers ( of which I am proudly!) They’ve been open for 100 years growing and selling peaches and pecans and just to see all the ways they’ve found to serve peaches is so much fun! I enjoyed freshly made peach ice cream today! Visit http://www.lanessouthernorchards.com/ to see all their ymmy goodies!
  • Ezell’s Catfish House. OMG. This is where we had dinner the first night. Fried Catfish in cormeal whole or filets – but as Donna said, of course you order it whole that’s half the fun, fried dill pickles, Georgia Ice Cream ( the other name for cheese grits- who knew!) , made from scratch coleslaw and HUSHPUPPIES!!! They’ve been around since 1937 and the food couldn’t be better. And nice people! No Website, but when you’re in Columbus, Georgia next, call them 706 568 1149 for hours and directions. The owner gave me a bumper sticker for the island car which says ” Eat Catfish and be somebody.” He also brought over a takehome menu for me to share some of his catfish info. For example, did you know that catfish is the number one requested food for death row inmates?
  • Lunch the next day was at Minnie’s Uptown Restaurant. This is a place very much like what Paula Deen had when she opened her first Lady and Sons Restaurant. True honest down home southern buffet cooking. Here’s what I had, real , true southern fried chicken, blackeyed peas, Mac-n- cheese, Okra and tomatoes, sweet tea….. and the desserts to choose from…… Pecan Pie, chocolate Peanut butter Pie, double lemon meringue, banana pudding ( home made from scratch like all the desserts!) All this for $8.95 and Minnie was there serving us up, calling everyone honey and thanking us for eating with her! She’s only open Monday – Friday from 10:45AM- 2:30PM and get there early because of the crowds.

I’m off tommorrow to LA to visit my favorite Marriott friend, Cindy, then meet up with my sister and mom to celebrate my sister’s 50th birthday! Stay tuned for more adventures from the West!

Farewell to Randy Pausch

I’m sure most of you have heard or seen Dr. Randy Pausch’s “The Last Lecture” either on You Tube, Oprah, Good Morning America or have purchased the book. Over 6 Million people have seen this on YouTube. This very inspirational man died recently of the Pancreatic cancer he was diagonosed with over a year ago. Living almost 6 months longer then most people who have his disese. Of all the quotes and stories from his lecture- there are three that really stayed with me.
“Brick walls are not there to keep us out. The Brick Walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The Brick Walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly. They are there to stop OTHER people.”
“Eeyore or Tigger- you can either face life with the joy and excitement of Tigger or the doom and gloom of Eeyore. You decide which way you to live your life.”
“Care about someone ‘s happiness more then you care about yourself. That’s why it took me 39 years to find that person and get married. “

If any of you have not seen or heard Randy’s “Last Lecture” please take the time to go to his website and do so. Inspirational isn’t a word big enough to do his talk justice…

Gary and Sue’s Wedding Anniversary boat trip

Gary ( our accounting office) and Sue ( one of our favorite Tybee realtors) celebrated their wedding anniversary in a very Tybee way- going out with Captain Elizabeth Johnson of Tybee Island Charters to Little Tybee for a nature excursion. Here are some pictures of their re- energizing morning. The bird is an oyster catcher, a very rare bird to see up close, but one they saw on the trip. I have not personally gone out with Captain Elizabeth yet, but will certainly plan to and will report back to you all about my own adventure. In the meantime, be sure you ask Gary about his wonderful experiences on the trip next time you call the accounting office – 912 786 5499.
Please visit the website for Captain Elizabeth on http://www.fishtybee.com/ or call 912 786 -4801 and take a fishing trip or nature trip with her!

Artist Week continues – Sara Tetley!

Sara was a guest who stayed with us last year and while here painted some of the charming cottages that dot our island! Her art is for sale directly from Sara ( but we’re hoping to have her featured at one of our local galleries sometime soon! ) In the meantime, you can contact her directly for prices on any of these pictures or to commission your own cottage.

314 800 3441 or email sara.tetley@pgav.com

PS check back with us – Sara also have a vacation rental in historic downtown Beaufort , SC . I’m planning a road trip there later this summer and will be sharing details in a future blog. Beaufort is the perfect side trip to add to your Tybee vacation experience. Check back… In the meantime, here is Sara in her own words.

“I love to paint on Tybee – it’s almost impossible to be on the island without encountering something inspiring. The beautiful light, sweet scale and eclectic charm is magical. That’s my idea of a fulfilling getaway-to begin to notice everything around with delight.

My watercolors focus on the cottages, with occasional diversions into still lives or landscapes. I guess I’m drawn to homes because I’m an architect. I was taught to paint awhile back at college by a hip Scotsman named Muir Stewart (these days you can find his work above every featured house plan in Coastal Living magazine)

I am a southern gal. I was raised in Virginia, Georgia and NW Florida and went to college in Alabama , I have no idea what I am doing in St Louis except dreaming about the south and the water…….. hope you enjoy my art! “
