“Diane,Look who I just happened to see while driving down Abercorn on my way to meet Susan Kelleher for our Lunch Crunch ab workout. I literally pulled to the side of the road in a no parking zone and grabbed the camera. Her production person explained they were literally starting to film but she grabbed my camera and offered to take a photo of the two of us. Ruby gave me a big hug — she is truly a Southern doll. I know she was down a little over 100 lbs last time I was able to catch the show. Unfortunately the film crew was ready to film so I had no time to talk to her or tell her how disappointed we were that the show is no longer being shown here in Savannah. She saw me from a distance, acknowledged me and honestly just gave me a big hug when I approached her. She is truly a stunning lady”

Here is Hallie’s recap afternoon at the Paula Deen book signing this week @ Uncle Bubba’s:
“Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Queen of Southern Cooking, our very own Paula Deen. At a book signing held at Uncle Bubbas the whole family gathered to meet and greet over 500 fans. And when I say the whole family, I mean Paula, Michael, Uncle Bubba, Jamie, Bobby and Bobby’s girlfriend. Yes, you read it correctly…Bobby has a girlfriend. Rumor has it he is dating actress Katy Mixon (she played Susan, pregnant wife of Jon Favreau in the movie Four Christmases). It’s been a busy year for the Deen family with numerous TV appearances and book signings. The boys recently came out with their third cookbook, The Deen Brothers. Take It Easy, which is fantastic, lots of great and simple recipes (be sure to pick one up at Seaside Sisters). At the same time, Paula has been traveling around promoting her Cookbook for the Lunch Box Set with numerous appearances on The Today Show and Good Morning America. And starting in November, Capt. Michael Groover will be touring around with his lovely wife promoting his new book, My Delicious Life with Paula Deen. Although the boys had to leave prior to my turn, the highlight of my day was Paula laughing hysterically while signing the group photo from my Deen Family Dinner (minus the Deen’s) Dinner Party. After informing her of the concept and highlighting our amazing menu of food items I assured her that she would receive a formal invitation….next time. “

Our Roving Blogger Hallie’s Movie Updates

I can’t be every place at once, so one of my favorite Savannah friends- Hallie- has volunteered to be my guest blogger complete with photographs. Here is her newest report from Downtown Savannah AND the newest movie being shot here – produced and directed by ROBERT REDFORD!!!! PS- I’ve also included a picture of Hallie and one of her all time favorites – Paula Deen!

“Well, the second day of filming for The Conspirator commenced on a beautiful sunny and comfortable Tuesday in downtown Savannah, GA. The movie, as you can see from the props, is set to take place during the 1860s. The story is about Mary Surratt, the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln. Directing this film is none other than the handsome and famous Robert Redford (as you can see from my blurry pictures).
The movie will feature James McAvoy (Atonement), Evan Rachel Wood (The Upside of Anger) and Robin Wright Penn (Message in a Bottle). Recently added to the film cast is Justin Long (Mac computer guy and He’s Just Not That Into You).
McAvoy plays a disfigured Civil War hero who comes to Mary’s defense, while Long will play his best friend and fellow soldier who also assists as McAvoy’s conscience. Robin Wright Penn will play Mary Surratt and it is rumored that Evan Rachel Wood will play President Lincolns wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Filming is set to run into December so more updates to come from beautiful Chatham Square, primary location of the filming.”

Our new favorite person- the production designer for "The Last Song"

A person has come into our lives on Tybee that we never knew we needed. But he’s here and he’s making a huge difference on our island. The production designer for “our” movie ” The Last Song”. These are pictures of Nelson in front of the burned out church as well as downtown Tybee and the pier. Here’s a great article which tells of Nelson’s talents and the work he’s done here.

“On Tybee Island near Savannah, Ga., former Abilenian Nelson Coates is causing quite a scene.”
He spruced up a public pier, set up a carnival on the beach and constructed a wood-framed church painted white. What catches the attention of Savannah locals, however, is a teenager associated with the work: Miley Cyrus of “Hannah Montana” fame.
Coates is production designer for “The Last Song,” a film written by Nicholas Sparks (“The Notebook”) where Cyrus plays an angry and alienated teen. The movie also stars Kelly Preston (“Sky High”) and Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”) as Cyrus’ divorced parents and up-and-coming Australian Liam Hemsworth as a love interest. Sparks’ book is due in September.
For 11 weeks prior to the start of filming in mid-June, Coates did prep work in Savannah. Shooting on the Walt Disney Pictures project is to wrap up in August for an early 2010 release.
“The Last Song” is the latest in a long list of Coates’ major films and TV shows. Other recent projects include the movies “The Proposal” and “The Express” and several episodes of the 2007 TV show “October Road.”
“I have kept myself from being type-cast. I’ve been fortunate to do period movies, dramas, actions, comedies, futuristics,” Coates said.
A production designer makes a script come alive visually. Location, scenery, room décor, clothing, hair and makeup, stunts, color pallet and any other visualizations of a story are the responsibility of the production designer.
Coates reports directly to a movie’s producer and director and oversees a crew of about 125 on an average production.

“I’m known for a high level of detail and at a high level of completion. My sets don’t feel like a set,” Coates said.
Coates usually tackles two films a year, or less if he is hired for a television show. He has worked across the country and in Canada, Bulgaria, Australia, Mexico and England.
“I always tell people my things live in LA (Los Angeles),” Coates said.

Another pivotal project was the 1994 television mini-series “The Stand” by Stephen King. The nine-month project included 220 sets in 110 shooting days in five states representing 25 states in the series. Coates’ work garnered him an Emmy nomination.
“The blessing of my career path is that I had small, complex problems and did well on then. Then you get bigger and bigger and bigger ones,” Coates said.
Movies are not the result of magic, but “possibility thinking,” he said.
For example, the current box office hit “The Proposal,” starring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson and Betty White, is set in New York City and Alaska, but filming occurred in and around Boston. Coates constructed a set inside a coastal house, giving it an “Architectural Alaska” magazine look, “if there was such a publication,” Coates said.
He then returned the house to its former interior after filming.
Six months after shooting wrapped, Coates said a new ending had to be filmed, but the Boston office building was unavailable. He instead meticulously recreated the set on a California soundstage.
“Either I had to figure it out or the next guy will,” Coates said.
He describes himself as a junior high principal and cheerleader encouraging others to do their best.”

Nelson we are so glad you are here on Tybee working your magic!
