Mermaid Sighting: Beautiful Handmade Glass Mermaids

If you know anything about Mermaid Cottages, you know we love art! And of course, if that art incorporates mermaids, well that’s even better. Just look at these beautiful glass mermaids by artist Deb DiMarco! These beautiful pieces, both the Green Mermaid and the Dichoric Mermaids, are offerings from the National Liberty Museum Store in Philadelphia, PA. Here’s what their site has to say about the artist and her gorgeous work:

“I love the balance of glass and that I can use it like very hot paint.” ~Deb DiMarco Studio del Vetro Salem, NJ. Working as an independent glass artist since 2006 Ms. DiMarco made the switch from 2-D to 3-D design. After retiring from a 20 year career in graphic arts, she enrolled in the Glass Program of Salem Community College in Carneys Point, NJ studying concept and technique from 2003 through 2006. Although Deb is primarily a flame worker, she enjoys exploring many of the possible avenues of working with glass and has used sand casting, mold-making, slumping, fusing and pate de verre to express her ideas. Ms. DiMarco stays actively involved in the glass art community, by teaching, volunteering at Wheaton Arts and giving live flame working demonstrations.”

We adore these beautiful pieces; so much so, we had to share them with you! Have you spotted a mermaid recently? Well, we’d love to hear about it! Please send your sightings and stories to us at diane@mermaidcottages.com. We’d love to feature your sighting right here on our blog!

Georgia Sea Turtles – Volunteering

Mermaid Cottages loves our sea turtles! Our own coffee — Mermaid Morning Bliss, which is available in all our homes and for sale at Sea Side Sisters — was created to support the Sea Turtle Project in Georgia. All profits go towards these projects. Tybee Island Sea Turtle ProjectWe are avid supporters other ways, such as through the Tybee Island Marine Science Center and the annual Tybee Turtle Trot 5K, held each spring to kick off Sea Turtle Season and proudly attended by many mermaids and mermen.

Several Mermaids are also part of the 6AM Turtle patrol from May 1st – Sept 1st where we walk the beach looking for newly laid turtle nests. Last summer Head Mermaid Diane found 2 turtle nests during her 6AM patrol! Lights out for Sea Turtles is also very important, and we have made sure our two beachfront cottages — Doyles on the Beach and Crabby Jo’s — have sea turtle-friendly lights and that our guests know what to do to for the homes to be sea turtle-friendly. For more info on Georgia sea turtles visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center and The Georgia Sea Turtle Center.
