Mermaid Sighting: Mermaid Molly Whelan

This week, we have an awesome mermaid sighting…a two for one of sorts! Our new found friend is Molly Whelan. She’s a mermaid at heart…but she’s also the creative force behind Mermaid Molly Boutique. Just take a look…her t-shirts speak for themselves!

Mermaid Molly is Molly’s long time dream. She makes t-shirts for businesses, boutiques, food service, events, charities and more featuring their name, choice of words and, of course, her mermaid! Originally from upstate New York, Molly now lives in sunny Boca Raton, Florida! We are so happy to have met a fellow mermaid in Molly, and hope she is able to come visit us here on Tybee soon! Make sure you check out her blog and visit her over on her Etsy page, too! And if you are interested in her t-shirts, please contact her via email at mermaidmollyofthesea@gmail.com!

Have you seen a mermaid? The world is full of them if you know where to look! Please send your sightings and stories to us and let us share them with our readers! Email me at diane@mermaidcottages.com and your sighting could be features right here on our blog! Hope to hear from you soon!

Mermaid Tales: Tucked Inn at Tybee

Welcome to 1106 Lovell Avenue and Tucked Inn at Tybee Cottage! The newly named cottage used to be called No Where to Go, but with the wonderful makeover, we felt a new name was in order! We’ve completely re-done the cottage, and the new name was the winning submission of our Mermaid Cottages Facebook Page name contest. We are super excited about the home’s renewal, and couldn’t be more delighted with how beautiful everything turned out!

This home is a classic beach retreat, just perfect for families, a girls weekend, or even a girl scout adventure. Tucked Inn at Tybee sits on a large lot, so there’s plenty of outdoor living to do. Bring your pets too, this home is still Fido friendly!

Grill out, enjoy a book on the back deck, or the shade of the mature palms. Anything goes! You may feel wonderfully secluded, but you aren’t far from Butler Avenue and everything the island has to offer! Take an easy one and a half block stroll to the beach, ride your bike to the local IGA Market for supplies, or visit some of Tybee’s favorite restaurants…you are close to it all!
Need to feel the bliss of slowing down?  Plan a visit and start looking forward to some lazy island days. Island time is all the time on Tybee! See you soon!

Help Us Name that Cottage!

It’s that time again! We have a new cottage in our family here at Mermaid Cottages, and we need your help giving it a name! This contest will work the same as our last one, with a poll over on our Mermaid Cottages Facebook Page. Remember, you can’t vote here! If you want your vote to count, you have to cast it in the Facebook Poll! We already have the names to choose from, we just need your help picking the best one!

It might be a little easier for you to choose a name if you know more about the cottage…so here’s a little background! This lovely home was built in 1942 and is now owned by the daughter of the previous owner, distinguished sculptor Weis Cain Snell of Atlanta. Mr. Snell worked with muesums all over, including Atlanta Cyclorama, and he actually helped design and create Tybee’s own museum!

Our new cottage is located at 1012 Jone Avenue, only a four block stroll to the beach! The home has been fully restored and freshly decorated, and it will be available for guests starting Memorial Day weekend. The cottage has two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, a beautiful screened porch, and is pet friendly! You and your pet will enjoy the fenced back yard, complete with a hammock under palm trees. Just look at these wonderful pictures!

Now, if you are interested in planning a trip to this cottage, please call 912-655-6525 or email me at diane@mermaidcottages.com! But remember, we have to name this beauty! The list of names to think about is:

  • Little Acorn Cottage
  • Shady Oak Cottage
  • Made in the Shade
  • Shady Acres

Remember, don’t vote here… Click HERE to head on over to the official Facebook Poll to cast your vote for your favorite name! The poll will close and the contest will end Monday, April 25th, at 6 p.m. so make sure you vote before then! We can’t wait to see which name comes out on top!

Mermaids in Our Midst: Linda Bray

Today, I want to send a big Thank You out to our fellow Mermaid, Linda Bray. Linda has been with us at Mermaid Cottages for three years and she has really become part of our family. She has been been a huge help in just about every facet of the business, from cleaning to social media, and we appreciate everything she does! She has also worked over at our favorite coastal shop, Seaside Sisters, and we loved seeing her smiling face there when we walked in.

Linda is leaving us this week to move to Florida to be closer to her family there. Linda, we love you so much and will miss your cheerful, witty ways and smiling face! Good luck to you and remember, Tybee is always here, so come back for a visit sometime!

Live Like a Local: Earth Day is Every day!

If you didn’t know, Earth Day is right around the corner! That’s right, April 22nd is officially Earth Day, but you don’t have to limit being green to just one special day. Here at Mermaid Cottages, we try to make every day Earth Day!We are all about living a little greener and showing Mother Earth how much we care.

Being green isn’t as difficult as it seems. It is really just a lot of little actions that add up to big benefits when they become habits. We do a lot of those little things to reap the green benefits around here!

First off, we make sure to do as much as we can electronically. We email everything, so there is less printing, which means less wasted paper! All of our cottages use Compact Fluorescent light bulbs, and we install Lo-flow water-saving devices in all of our bathrooms and outdoor showers. Everyone here contributes something to our green philosophy…some of our Mermaids and Mermen ride their bicycles to work, and we clean with all Eco-friendly products. We even do energy audits for all of our cottages to see how we can save even more energy. And outside our homes, we plant drought resistant local plants to help conserve water. We also participate in Tybee’s Community Garden project!

We want to do whatever we can to leave this planet a little better than we found it, and we encourage others to do the same. Just some ways you can help during your stay (and even when you return home!) are:

  • Slay “Vampire Power” by turning off all lights, TVs, DVDs & computers when not in use
  • Use the outdoor clothesline to dry your clothes (they smell good too!)
  • Open the windows turn on the ceiling fans and enjoy the ocean breezes!
  • Use Cold, not Hot in the washing machine
  • Draw your curtains/blinds during the heat of the day
  • Walk, ride bikes, rent scooters or electric cars!
  • Recycle…glass, plastic, cans, newspapers: use the home’s green recycling container!
  • Reduce and Reuse by taking your own bags to the grocery store.
  • While brushing teeth, turn water off, and use a cup of water to cleanse mouth of
    toothpaste.

We could go on and on about fun ways to be Earth friendly! Find ideas-a-plenty on how you can be a little greener on our Being Green page over on our website! This Earth is the only one we’ve got…let’s all be good stewards. We didn’t inherit this planet from our parents, it is on loan to us from future generations, so let’s take good care of our gift! Happy Earth Day Y’all!
