Live Like a Local: Tybee’s Sea Turtle Season Has Begun!

If you know anything about Mermaid Cottages, you know we love our sea turtles! Well, May 1st marked the beginning of the 2012 season, and we’ve been waiting to hear the news of the turtles’ arrival. Well, today we heard just that!

Tybee‘s first nest of the season was found Tuesday morning! It was located at 11th Street, just over the rack line. Eighty-six eggs were relocated (87 total, one was taken for the genetic study) to a higher spot in the dunes for their safety. The nest is marked off just south of the 11th Street crossover. Tybee Island is now tied with St. Simmons in nest numbers!

 Woohoo! Sea turtle season is off and running! We are so thankful for the hard working staff and volunteers with the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project. They are the important link between us and the beautiful creatures we long to protect. Thanks for all the dedication everyone, and keep up the great work!

Everyone at Mermaid Cottages is so excited! We’ve been lucky enough to add a few new cottages to our family, and we can’t wait for you to discover them!

One of our newest additions is the amazingly beautiful Bohemian Cottage. The brand new picture on our website’s welcome page is just one beautiful corner of Bohemian! Our favorite photographer, Belinda Hall, simply out-did herself with her work at Bohemian Cottage! Every picture is more beautiful than the next, and we just adore them all! Belinda, you are simply amazing!

Mermaid Sighting: Ahoy, an International Mermaid!

Mermaid Cottages sure loves seeing mermaid sightings from our fans. It’s always exciting to see where you find mermaids hiding, and this week is a special international treat! Lisa’s email and sighting comes to us all the way from Canada!

“Greetings from Canada! We’re a long ways from home, but found a little mermaid friend! So I have mermaids on the brain because our next trip (and my LAST before this sweet baby boy comes in July) will be to run away to Tybee for a week in June. We can’t wait to stay at Mermaid Manor, and that mermaid has been on my mind for a LONG time! Presently, I’m with my husband in Victoria, BC for his business before we head down to a vineyard wedding in Sonoma, CA. I’ve been exploring beautiful Victoria on my own and took a little harbor tour yesterday. It was highly recommended I stop at Fisherman’s Wharf for the best Fish & Chips on the island, and there she was! Peeking above the float houses….this sweet little mermaid on the bow of a ship. Turns out she has the very important job of welcoming children to the playground, but she seemed to be keeping a watchful eye on the harbor as well. Can’t wait to get back to Tybee soon! Blessings, Lisa Ward “
