My time as a Vacation Rental Guest

I’ve been in Corolla, NC ( which is the part of the Outer Banks region of North Carolina) since Monday staying with dear friends for the Thanksgiving holidays. My very capable team of Mary Lou, Judy, Teresa and Gary are on the island watching over all our guests and taking care of any and all needs. Which allows me to see what it’s like from the view point as a guest for a change! I’ve also been able to meet with acouple of very well established vacation rental companies here in the Outer Banks including the very inovative Doug Brindley of Brindley Beach Vacation Rentals. Visit his website should you ever decide to visit ! http://www.brindleybeach.com/

Here are some of my learning points from the week which I’d like to share:
  • Gathering together is extremely important for humans. Most of us do not like to be alone and to have a chance to come together, especially over the holidays is so important. Our group includes Donna’s 82 year old father who lives in a Masonic Home and like all the rest of us who are in our 40’s-50’s- we’re all enjoying just eating together, talking together, even just sitting around together watching the occassional TV show!
  •

  • The vacation home needs to create space for people to be together in a warm, welcoming enviroment. Because so many of us are so busy each day, every day when we finally do get a chance to get away, we need to go somewhere that feels like home- but better. The homes need to have all the items you need to cook if you want, comfy furniture to be able to curl up and nap if you want ( our dear Fred has mastered the napping skill for all of us here!) and be a home you’d like to own if you could!
  •

  • Information on the destination to help create memories of a lifetime. We took an amazing 3 hour jeep tour today to see the Wild Mustangs of Corrolla today! More to come on that experience in another blog… The vacation home needs to have info to make it easy for you to figure out how you’d like to spend your day- be it walking the beach to collect shells, work out at the local gym , bike ride the streets or shop the local sales ( all of which I’ve done the past few days)
  •

  • Technology- everyone of us, including Sam who’s 82, brought their laptops to stay in touch with work and with friends and family who aren’t here with us. At one point, everyone of us was on our laptops! This is so very, very important on a daily basis, yes even over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I no longer believe you can leave it all behind. 99% of the world needs to stay connected on some level, even if it’s just to your family- which is certainly the most important people to be connected to.
  •

  • Pets on holiday…. Annie the Dog is here with us. She is walked daily by each of us during the course of the day, I think she’s the excuse to be outside in this glorious fall weather . When a pet is part of your family, to leave them behind is almost un thinkable- so a pet friendly vacation home is very important to many of us.

I truly hope that I’m already applying all these learnings to our Mermaid Cottages, but if I’m not, this certainly has been a GREAT reminder to do so!

Road Trip Suggestion for the Big Three Auto CEO’s

I truly believe in buying Made in America Products. I support local business as much as I can, be it local food, Manufactured in the US products, buy from small businesses in my community. Cars have- for some reason- been the exception for years. I was a Volvo driver when Katie was a baby, and then stuck with Volvo for years, especially after my Volvo saved both of our lives when we were in a front end collision….. Our Mermaid Cottages Island Car is the 25 year old Volvo Station Wagon that was Katie’s first car and is still running great! The pictures above show the Island Car with Mary Lou.
A few years ago, I traded my Volvo for a Land Rover- a car I’d always thought I wanted. You know, car of the royal family, riding around the suburban streets of Atlanta thinking I was really on a safari in Africa, I totally bought into the marketing package !But after three years of the car constantly being in the shop and being a gas guzzler ,I purchased a Honda CRV. My dear friend Penny Paxton ( of the self portrait blog entry this summer with her Bellamy Murphy rooster piece of art!) has driven Honda’s for years and loved the CRV. I’m now on my 2nd CRV and am waiting till Honda comes out with a Hybrid CRV and then I’ll be set for ever. Seriously- I’ve already talked to Honda and they’re staying it’s still a few years away, but is in the works.
Honda is not one of the big 3 Car Companies, but a vibrant part of American Business. Best of all , they make really, really good cars, that don’t use alot of gas, last a long time and are just a pleasure to drive. Go to www.honda.com/america/ for more details on how they conduct themselves.

Which brings me to point for this blog. Just like with Sarah Palin and the Turkey Slaughter Episode in Alaska ( I truly don’t know if I can eat Turkey this Thanksgiving…..) where were the very highly paid PR people when the Big 3 EACH took their separate Corporate Jets to DC……

Here’s the suggestion I heard Scott Simon share from NPR’s Weekend Saturday and as someone who personally loves Road Trips- I thought this was brilliant!

He suggested what they SHOULD have done is all shared a Hybrid Car and driven the 9 hours from Detroit to DC on one tank of gas…… They would have driven through all the areas of our country that rely on the jobs the US Auto Industry creates, could have stopped along the way at small town road side restaurants and talked to the people who’s jobs have been affected and even done Podcasts from the road. Then pulled up in from of the Capital and held a big press conference to talk more about their trip and their need for the $25 Billion Loan and explain to the public directly ( not in front of Congress) why this was so crucial to the entire country. Pretty good huh! Visit http://www.npr.org/ and then go to Weekend Edition Saturday and you can hear the whole show .

Unfortunately that’s not what they did and last night’s SNL did another brilliant satire of their meeting before Congress this week.
I hope we can help save this industry, I hope they can come up with a very detailed plan on why and how they’d use the money, I hope someday I can buy a hybrid car from one of these American Companies that runs as well, is as maintenance free as my Honda. But until then, I will keep supporting a car company that has been in the US since the 1950’s and has taken car innovation to new levels.

Speaking of Road Trips- I’m off today on my next road trip- heading to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to spend Thanksgiving with friends. We’re staying in a Vacation Rental in Corolla, NC so I’ll be experiencing the holidays like so many of you all this year! Looking forward to reporting back on my vacation rental experience! I always enjoy seeing the vacation world from my guests perspective, this always reminds me how important a great website and lots of information is to all of you! Stay tuned!

Miss Sylvia’s 99 1/2 Birthday Party at Docs

I truly am starting to think that you don’t need a MBA from Wharton or years in Corporate America to market something sucessfully – all you need is passion about a product you believe in very, very strongly. The owners of Doc’s Bar love their bar. Weekly they keep coming up with really fun ways to entertain themselves, their locals and any un suspecting visitors who happen to wander in- day or evening. Their marketing is really smart and clever. Look at what they did this week….
Miss Sylvia’s turned 99 1/2 this past week and Doc’s hosted a party bringing together the local musicans and Miss Sylvia herself on the drums. Take a few minutes and click on the link below to watch some of the fun. And if you’re smart, in exactly 6 months you’ll be here on Tybee celebrating her 100th Birthday- where else but Doc’s!!!
Here’s what they said on their website:
. “If you missed it we are sorry. It was a great night. The mayor stopped by and everyone danced and sang along with The Queen. If you have pictures please send them to us and we will get them up on the web. Follow this link to the videos.”

We celebrated Mary Lou’s Birthday in Tybee Style!

Our beloved Mary Lou celebrated a birthday recently and we celebrated in great Tybee Style! Yes, these are adults wearing birthday hats- why- well just because we could! Mary Lou is now off on a road trip with another Tybee favorite- Joyce- they jumped in their car last week and headed off – a la Thelma and Louise- to drive to Texas! Not sure when she’s returning- but as she said- “I’ll be back before Spring!”
