I truly am starting to think that you don’t need a MBA from Wharton or years in Corporate America to market something sucessfully – all you need is passion about a product you believe in very, very strongly. The owners of Doc’s Bar love their bar. Weekly they keep coming up with really fun ways to entertain themselves, their locals and any un suspecting visitors who happen to wander in- day or evening. Their marketing is really smart and clever. Look at what they did this week….
Miss Sylvia’s turned 99 1/2 this past week and Doc’s hosted a party bringing together the local musicans and Miss Sylvia herself on the drums. This Weekend on the Island

The Slow Season is the time when Tybeeittes come out for good causes! Here are two events happening this weekend that you don’t want to miss! A special Thank You to Christopher Banks who created the “Blindfolded Buggy Race” to help raise funds for his first book to raise money for Guide Dog Programs ( I believe all of you know Mermaid Cottages sponsors a Guide Dog Puppy each year!) and to Susan Kelleher of SeaSide Sisters Coastal Cottage Shop ( http://www.seasidesisterstybee.com/) who worked to create the fundraiser this weekend to Save the Tybee Ta- Ta’s. We are very, very lucky to have such creative people using their energy for good causes.

 

Saturday November 22nd
The First-Ever Blindfolded Buggy Race and Ultimate Corn Hole Championship.

 

There will be food, drink, games, raffles and the fabulous Train Wrecks will be playing later on at Huc-A-Poos.

 

All proceeds go toward publication of a children’s book that teaches kids about guide dogs.

 

Starts at noon this Saturday, November 22
Jaycee Park at Van Horne Avenue, Tybee Island
Teams of two will race a shopping cart around Jaycee Park, one member will sit in the basket acting as the navigator, while the other will push the cart blindfolded. Team with the best time wins first prize.

 

Cost is $25 to enter the race, but doesn’t cost a thing to watch all the fun!!

Our beloved Mary Lou celebrated a birthday recently and we celebrated in great Tybee Style! Yes, these are adults wearing birthday hats- why- well just because we could! Mary Lou is now off on a road trip with another Tybee favorite- Joyce- they jumped in their car last week and headed off – a la Thelma and Louise- to drive to Texas! Not sure when she’s returning- but as she said- “I’ll be back before Spring!”

I’m off to my college for Homecoming this weekend, but even bigger ( especially since I haven’t been to one Homecoming in 30 years) is I’m attending because of the 100th Year Anniversary of the Marching Band- of which my Pom Pom Squad was part. More to come on this after the weekend, but in the meantime, here’s a picture of my squad in 1974 at the University of Maryland ( can you find me with my Farrah Fawcett hairstyle which we all had in 1973 on?)

Pirate Fest here on Tybee brings out the best in people. Yes, these well dressed “adults” are some of our cottage home owners…. Truly having a great time over Pirate Fest a few weekends agao. We all had so much fun ( even those of us dressed in normal clothes) that we all decided that NEXT year’s pirate fest we are going to participate in the Saturday Afternoon parade down Butler Ave- we’re going to be Pirate Mermaids! Haven’t yet decided if we want to be on bikes or have a float- if we do bikes, then everyone can particapate. Don’t worry, we’ll give you all plenty of notice so all of you can be here on Tybee attired in your best mermaid and merman pirate clothes!
