Joe’s Grill At Doc’s Bar!

We love it when one of our friends is considered a local Tybee Character ( for my long time readers you’ll remember my April Blog about how you know when you’ve crossed that line and you yourself have become “local” flavor…) Joe , as in the Commodore of the Tybee Bomb Squad, Day time bar tender at Doc’s bar and now Sunday Grill Chef at Doc’s is on duty this Sunday . Here’s the press release that was sent out to the locals today via the electronic coconut telegraph:

“It’s Joe’s Grill At Doc’s This Sunday

Joe will light the grill at 12:30. Come on out for a day of food and fun with one of Tybee’s best characters. Food will be served until he runs out or passes out. We are taking bets on which one will come first.

On the Menu
Joe’s famous “Tropical Storm Fay Burger” – A wind storm of flavors.
Joe’s “Get Out Of My Bar You Weenie Hot Dog” – Size does matter.
And…………………
A special “Surprise Sandwich” will also be served.

Also………………………
There is a rumor that Sunday night we will have “Peggy’s Homemade Lasagna”.
(Whose home it is actually made in we are not too clear on that yet.)”

Just in case you haven’t been to Doc’s Bar, Sunday should be the day you come by. Fun, Great Food and yes- local flavor and characters.

We’re ready for Tropical Storm Fay!

Thank you Kay Petty for sharing this picture. With all the rain we’ve been having with the tropical depression ( don’t get us wrong,we need and want this rain…) we all need these shoes!
Thanks to all of you who’ve called and emailed worried about the storm, we’re fine. Power went out earlier today for several hours, lots and lots of rain, but no flooding and no problems at any of the cottages.

For the love of dogs….

My sister and her family had to put to sleep their wonderful Golden Retriever , Rocky this week. Rocky was an older dog they adopted from a great rescue group in Los Angeles which only works with Goldens and especially older dogs. Rocky had lost his eye in a cat fight with his previous owners before they turned him into a shelter and he was then rescued by my family. He was a great dog, always happy and smiling and loved his life with the Callahan Family. Visit this website for more information about adopting older dogs and the joy they bring to their humans…
Rocky, you knew how loved you were and that’s the best any of us can hope for- humans or dogs…Thank you for being such a great dog.

Also be sure to visit one of our favorite Artist’s Blogs- Fifi Flowers Design Decor and look at her recent paintings of dogs…

Look for info on the leash cutting of the Tybee Bark Parks on Saturday….

Pure Bliss

I shared with everyone earlier this summer my plans for the photo shoot with the fabulous Christine Hall of Christine Hall Photography. Christine offered a special this summer where she would photograph your pets and donate the proceeds to various Savannah and Chatham County Animal Rescue groups as her way of giving back. All she asked was you donate a bag of dog food as well.

I brought my two labs to downtown Savannah on a hot Sunday afternoon in June and the very patient Christine took a series of shots of the dogs. It was not easy, the dogs were so excited by all the sights and sounds of the city , especially when the horse and buggy full of visitors trotted by! That would have been the shot I shared with you all, me trying to control two 90 pound dogs who desperately wanted to chase that horse down the lane!

This is my favorite- capturing that look of pure bliss . Even though this was Danny’s moment of happiness, I think we all have this look when someone is petting our heads and telling us how special and loved you are!

Christine’s website is full of great examples of families, children, weddings and pets and she loves to come to the beach to shot! http://www.christinehallphotography.com/

This Weekend on the Island

Three fun events are happening this weekend on the Island!
1. Side walk sale at Seaside Sisters Saturday and Sunday. 10AM- 6PM both days. www.seasidesisterstybee.com
2. Tybee Prom– an annual favorite for locals and visitors alike. Saturday July 26th
Though proms of the past were famous for their punch and cookies, the Tybee Prom will bow to the pressure to have “serious” food. Inside the Legion, your prom ticket to benefit Tybee Beautification will entitle you to bar snacks — nuts, Chex Mix, and M&Ms. Outside the Legion, the Marine Rescue Squadron will be selling their WORLD FAMOUS HOMEMADE BRUNSWICK STEW to benefit MRS! This is not your ordinary stew, but rather a hearty mix with everything in it including chicken, BBQ, and some secret ingredients. And a cup of stew will be a lot easier to eat without having to sit at a table. After all, this is a dance…not a dinner! J Please pass the word and bring some cash! Thanks for your support of these two vital Tybee volunteer organizations!
Tybee Prom, Saturday, Tybee American Legion, 7 pm to midnight, Music by the Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love, Psychedelic Summer of Love, Tickets $20 a person at the door. Please call 272-9200 for more information. There will be a spotted volunteer photographer, Miki Skelton, taking photos at the Prom.
