Welcome to 401 4th Street, Tybee Island, GA and one of our favorite cottages…The Shrimp! If you love Tybee’s quirky cottage style, The Shrimp is definitely for you. This home is full of Tybee style! The Shrimp was featured in the 2006 Tybee Tour of Homes as well as in the January 2009 Coastal Living Magazine‘s Guest Book article!

Need a family retreat or longing for a girlfriend getaway? The Shrimp sleeps six comfortably, so it’s perfect for any group wishing to while away the days in our little corner of paradise. Your cottage is located next door to the Key Lime Parrot Cottage as well. It’s the perfect set up for family groups wanting to vacation together, but still enjoy their own space. It’s even ground level for anyone looking to avoid stairs.

Your cottage sits directly across the street from Memorial Park with wonderful family fun activites! The park includes a large children’s playground, tennis courts, and outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, so there are plenty of opportunities for fun. When you catch the beach-combing bug, Tybee’s gorgeous beach is a short 3 block walk through the park! Don’t want to walk? Oh my goodness…where did November go?! It sure is hard to believe the Christmas season is already here and the New Year is right around the corner. I mean, wasn’t it July just yesterday?!

This time of year might be a slower season on Tybee Island, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on! Tybee is still beautiful during the fall and winter months, and you can still enjoy long lazy days of strolling with the beach all to yourself! Just look at these beautiful pictures from our very own Mermaid Margo, owner of Fish Camp Cottage. Pure beach bliss!

The holidays are just about one of our favorite times of year here in paradise. Our celebrations are not-to-be-missed, and we definitely deck the halls…Tybee style, of course! That’s the good news; want the great news? Published authors and journalists are invited to apply for a complimentary Mermaid Cottages writing getaway.

_____I understand I will be submitting a short story or essay of at least 1500 words to Mermaid Cottages in exchange for my stay from _______________ to _______________ (7 day, 6 night maximum stay from November 2011 to March 2012, excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and Special Event Dates). I also understand if my application is accepted I will be required to sign a separate permission form to allow Mermaid Cottages to publish my submitted short story/essay.

In exchange for this complimentary vacation cottage stay, writers agree to submit a short story or essay to Mermaid Cottages to possibly be included in a published compendium of stories about Tybee Island, GA. Authors will agree to license Mermaid Cottages to use their story in a published book, along with proper credit and a biography of each author, on the Mermaid Cottages’ website, and in any way to promote Mermaid Cottages Writer Retreats.

A writer’s story or essay must be a minimum of 1500 words and revolve around Tybee Island, or some aspect of the locale, either as a setting or a subject. We highly recommend the story line also include in some way the cottage in which the writer stays. Any literary genre of story or essay is acceptable, including but not limited to memoir, mystery, fantasy, romance, horror, fiction and non-fiction.

An agreement to write and permission to license your story will be part of the application to your Mermaid Cottages retreat. Stories must be submitted as a Word document within 30 days of the end of your stay at Mermaid Cottages.

We support the arts and want to publicize Tybee Island and Mermaid Cottages as a unique artistic retreat. It is our hope that these retreats will become a regular feature of our island and the publication of a book of short stories will serve to promote the arts in our area.

Applications will be accepted and booked on a first come basis as availability is limited.

Once upon a time soon to be, in a cozy  cottage near the sea, writers on retreat will ponder, “Oh what an inspiration to create stories about Tybee Island life these historic  Mermaid Cottages must be.”

Mermaid Cottages  announces our invitation to published authors and journalists to be our guests for our1st Annual Mermaid Cottage Writer Retreats.  From November 2011 through February 2012, invited writers will enjoy the complimentary use of a cottage as a getaway to write and create new literary works.
