Mermaids Make a Difference: We Love to be Green!

Around here, “being green” is about more than a pretty color! It’s so very important to Mermaid Cottages that we do our very best to take care of our environment, and we do everything we can to bring on the green. Being green isn’t as difficult as it seems. It is really just a lot of little actions that add up to big benefits when they become habits. We do a lot of those little things to reap the green benefits around here!

There are literally loads of ways to be a better steward of our Earth. What does Mermaid Cottages do to stay green? Well install Compact Fluorescent light bulbs in all of our homes to save on electricity and use Lo-flow water-saving devices in all bathrooms and outdoor showers. We keep all our cleaning products eco-friendly, which is better for you and your for legged family, too. We even conduct energy audits for all our homes to see where we might be able to save more energy. Mermaid Cottages even takes pride in making our outdoor living spaces as green as possible by planting drought resistant and local plants to help conserve water!

We invite our guests to join our green efforts during their stay, and maybe even take the good habits home with them! Here are just a few ways you can make your stay with Mermaid Cottages a little greener:

It's easier than you think!

Save Electricity
– Slay “Vampire Power” by turning off all lights, TVs, DVDs & computers when not in use
– Use the outdoor clothesline to dry your clothes (they smell good too!)
– Open the windows turn on the ceiling fans and enjoy the ocean breezes!
– Use Cold water, not Hot, in the washing machine
– Draw your curtains/blinds during the heat of the day

Save Fuel and Drive Less
– Walk, ride bikes, rent scooters or electric cars!
– Save gas and have more fun – Tybee is better enjoyed moving SLOW!

Recycle
– Glass, plastic, cans, newspapers: use the home’s green recycling container

Reduce, Reuse
– Take reusable bags during your trip to the grocery store
– Use Dish Cloths and cloth napkins and less paper products

Conserve Water
– While brushing teeth, turn water off, and use a cup of water to cleanse mouth of
toothpaste
– Use dishwasher only when completely full with dirty dishes
– Take shorter showers with tepid water

Make being green part of your every day routine, Y'all!

And that’s just getting started! It’s not just Earth friendly to be green…it’s even fun! Once you start thinking of ways to conserve, reduce, reuse, and recycle, the ideas just start flowing. So we invite you to join Mermaid Cottages in our efforts to be a little greener. Maybe even take the habits home as a way of keeping your Tybee State-of-Mind!

Mermaid Sighting: Mermaid Camps

Hasn’t everyone, at some point in their life, wished they were a mermaid? Be honest! Well, of course you have, and now you can! The world famous mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida actually offer Mermaid Camps!

That’s right! You can attend a special camp, just for mermaids! They offer their Adventures Under the Spring Mermaid Camp, for children ages 7 to 14. Kids that participate learn what it’s like to be an underwater performer. During the underwater training, kids will learn the basic ballet moves that the mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs perform every day. Attendees also learn the daily responsibilities of being a mermaid and a behind the scenes point-of-view at what it takes to put on a mermaid show. There’s a Mermaid Makeover, complete with a self portrait and a group shot, so the memories last forever. Campers even get to participate in one of the mermaid shows as a dry performer in the underwater theater! They also offer a Sirens of the Deep Camp for adults with all the same fun and magic, ending with a live performance by the participants for their family and friends.  How much fun is that?!

If you want more information about the camps, or Weeki Wachee Springs in general, visit their website or find them on their official Weeki Wachee Springs Facebook Page.

Tybee’s New World Record!

Two thousand twelve is here, and it really started with a bang here on Tybee Island! The fireworks on New Year’s Eve sent 2011 out in style, but Tybee’s 2012 got off to a fabulous start with the Tybee Polar Plunge and the island’s attempt to set a new world record- The Largest Gathering of People Wearing Swim Caps!

The Tybee Polar Plunge is a favorite annual event here, and it never disappoints. More participants show up every year, and this year was no exception! Over 2000 people showed up to take the plunge, don a swim cap, do both, or just to stand by and watch the craziness.

“Tybee Island entered the Guinness Book of World Records by staging the largest gathering of people wearing swim caps. The total was 2,049, easily breaking the previous record of 546 set in Osaka, Japan. The event was followed by the annual Tybee Polar Plunge. It was, indeed, a great New Year’s morning at the beach.” ~Connect Savannah on Facebook

The participants donned their caps, along with creative costumes, and a little past noon, everyone ran toward the waves! Check out this video from SavannahNow.com!

The fee to register for participation in the world record attempt and plunge was for a great cause. The funds raised at the Tybee Polar Plunge will go to the continued restoration of the Historic Tybee Post Theater to new glory. According to SavannahNow.com, the new record is unofficial at the moment, but that’s just until Tybee submits documentation to secure official word on the new world record!

Here’s to 2012 starting off with a bang! May your New Year be fun and fabulous…and hopefully, bring you to Tybee Island sometime!

Mermaid Sighting: Florida Mermaids

Back in November, our own Mermaid Melissa picked up and moved to Florida! She and her husband were exploring their new town a week after moving in and wouldn’t you know it, they spotted a mermaid! And not only one…but three!

Don't you just love the little blocks?!

Melissa said they were wandering around and decided to check out a local art museum. “I didn’t think it would take too long to spot one, since it is Florida, but I wasn’t expecting to spot three within a week of moving!”

These lovely sea creatures were gracing the shelves of the gift shop in The Florida Museum for Women Artists in DeLand. Aren’t they fabulous? So playful and fun! Thank you for sharing Melissa!

We just adore the little details, like the sea horse!
