The Southern Living Photo Shoot and The Shrimp

While Southern Living Magazine was here doing their photo shoot on Tybee Island for the travel section article next summer, Meg shot several of our cottages. Meg styled the screened porch for the picture- look at cute these pictures turned out- and this was from my little hand me down digital camera. Imagine this shot from a real professional and real camera!!!

Another Southern Living Magazine photo shoot

Southern Living Magazine came back to Tybee to shoot some pictures for a travel article on Tybee to be featured next summer. WOW! Watching a true pro work with the shooting of the sights and scenes of the island was great fun! I was lucky enough to “help” Meg McKinney, photographer for the travel section of the magazine and show her all the in’s and out’s of the island. Meg had a very extensive list of what the magazine wanted to feature for the article and shooting “downtown” Tybee was one of the “to do’s”. Walking down the street carrying all the camera equipment, answering questions of the many visitors who wanted to know what was going on , enjoying their reaction when Meg introduced herself as representing Southern Living and seeing Tybee through the eyes of a first time visitor!
People love this magazine and were very excited to know their little beloved Tybee would be featured in a magazine with 13 million subscribers. This is the picture of Meg taking a picture of Ralph Douglas Jones aka “the Tybee Fish Art Guy” and the unveiling of his masterpiece Ralphael the Flying Turtle.
One of our favorite shoots was of Tradewinds Homemade Ice Cream on Tybrisa Street. There are two locations on Tybrisa- the Snack Shack which is Italian Ices and the shop itself across the street with over 18 homemade ( really and truly) flavors! Their logo is “Kone Tiki” ( see above)

More to come on this wonderful little Tybee Treasure in future blogs.

Thank you again Meg and Jennifer of Southern Living! We can’t wait to see the issue next summer!

New Mermaid Sighting!

One of our recents cottage visitors who stayed at SeaGlass Cottage sent us their mermaid sighting! Here’s their report in their own words.

“I’ve been following the Mermaid sightings on your blog and thought you might like this photo from our visit to the Sea Glass. Our daughter picked up the mermaid doll on a daytrip to the SC aquarium in Charleston. She brought her Emily Windsnap book with her on our Tybee visit. If you’re not familiar with this tween book series, it’s about a 12 yr old who discovers she’s a mermaid. See, mermaids ARE everywhere!
We had an absolutely fantastic time and are already planning next year’s beach adventure! Thank you so very much for creating the perfect cottage get-aways for all all-too-busy family.”

Farewell to Randy Pausch

I’m sure most of you have heard or seen Dr. Randy Pausch’s “The Last Lecture” either on You Tube, Oprah, Good Morning America or have purchased the book. Over 6 Million people have seen this on YouTube. This very inspirational man died recently of the Pancreatic cancer he was diagonosed with over a year ago. Living almost 6 months longer then most people who have his disese. Of all the quotes and stories from his lecture- there are three that really stayed with me.
“Brick walls are not there to keep us out. The Brick Walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The Brick Walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly. They are there to stop OTHER people.”
“Eeyore or Tigger- you can either face life with the joy and excitement of Tigger or the doom and gloom of Eeyore. You decide which way you to live your life.”
“Care about someone ‘s happiness more then you care about yourself. That’s why it took me 39 years to find that person and get married. “

If any of you have not seen or heard Randy’s “Last Lecture” please take the time to go to his website and do so. Inspirational isn’t a word big enough to do his talk justice…

Gary and Sue’s Wedding Anniversary boat trip

Gary ( our accounting office) and Sue ( one of our favorite Tybee realtors) celebrated their wedding anniversary in a very Tybee way- going out with Captain Elizabeth Johnson of Tybee Island Charters to Little Tybee for a nature excursion. Here are some pictures of their re- energizing morning. The bird is an oyster catcher, a very rare bird to see up close, but one they saw on the trip. I have not personally gone out with Captain Elizabeth yet, but will certainly plan to and will report back to you all about my own adventure. In the meantime, be sure you ask Gary about his wonderful experiences on the trip next time you call the accounting office – 912 786 5499.
Please visit the website for Captain Elizabeth on http://www.fishtybee.com/ or call 912 786 -4801 and take a fishing trip or nature trip with her!
