Halloween is next week! Can you believe it?! We sure can’t. Well, if you are still looking for a costume idea, why not go nautical! Mermaids are all the rage, if you haven’t heard, and there are loads of neat ways to show off your inner siren!

Everyone knows about The Little Mermaid, but there are so many more ideas to make your costume that much more unique. Look at all these different marvelous mermaid costumes (and even wigs!) we found online at Amazon.com and on mermaidcostume.net! We are especially partial to that little mermaid princess…but they are all fabulous! There are even beautiful tales to be found on Etsy…just look at these fabulous tales from Pixy Tales!

Already have an outfit and just need some cool accessories? Well check out these! We LOVE the seaweed boa something fierce, and those nautical prosthetics from PM and D on Etsy are simply amazing! We even saw this fun make-up tutorial for those looking to transform into their inner mermaid!

Mermaid Cottage Goodies Alert!

They’re here! Mermaid Cottages goodies are pouring into Seaside Sisters and we are so excited! Now, you can bring Mermaid Cottages home with you in even more new and fun ways. Check these out!

These fabulous accessories are the handy work of Jackie Callahan and her company, J-Prons! Jackie is a self proclaimed “semi-empty nester” and wanted to fill her evening down time with creativity she doesn’t get the chance to let loose at her day job, where she is a registered nurse for an insurance company. “I have always loved to cook and, for some unknown reason, always loved aprons,” Jackie told us. So, she found a pattern, bought some yummy fabric, and pulled out her 28 year old Singer sewing machine. Not long after, her first apron was finished and the addiction began. After sharing a few of her creations on Facebook, she suddenly had loads of people wanting their very own apron! Ain’t Facebook grand?

Jackie says it has been so much fun finding whimsical fabrics and fine-tuning her own designs. “My husband Tim came up with the company name, J-Prons. Jackie+Arpons=J-Prons! In addition to the aprons, I also make slouchy shoulder/beach bags and baby/toddler hats. So, like our motto says, we’ve got you covered!” Make sure to head over to the official J-Prons Facebook Page and learn more about these fun, fabulous designs and keep up with all the new additions!

All of these fabulous designs are now available at Seaside Sisters here on Tybee, complete with our Mermaid Cottages logo!  The quality is outstanding…you will not be disappointed! These accessories make great souvenirs, but you will want to stock up because they make wonderful gifts as well! Making a Difference, Mermaid Style!

Welcome to Tybee Island!

Mermaid Cottages has the coziest homes away from home in Tybee Island and Savannah, it’s true. But we’re more than vacation rentals; we’re part of a community. That’s why we are active with the local island community, including helping people and local organizations we believe in and love. That’s what our project, Mermaids Make a Difference, is all about! We invite you to jump right in and volunteer during your visit. Of course, we’d like for you to get involved if even just for the day as well!

Beach Sweep September 2011

We love giving back to our community and want to share every opportunity we know about with you! If you are looking for ways to be more involved, whether it’s during your vacation or just for the day, make sure to check out the Community tab on our website.  It’s a little thing we like to call Voluntourism on Tybee, and we’d love for you to join us in giving a little back! We have a list full of fabulous ways to get in there and give back. There are loads of upcoming events listed for you to choose from, like The Journey to Peace Walk to benefit the SAFE Shelter of Savannah on October 22nd, and The PurpleStride Savannah 5K to raise awareness and funds to fight Pancreatic Cancer November 12th, just to name a few. We also have Beach Sweeps planned on a regular basis, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy! You can even show off your Mermaid pride with a tee shirt from Seaside Sisters, where there are loads of other Mermaid Cottages goodies as well. Goodies that help you give back with each purchase!

Just by staying with Mermaid Cottages you are giving back! Your stay helps us support Tybee’s Sea Turtles and the guide dogs we sponsor each year!

Mermaid Lore

You know, mermaids have been around for a very long time. It’s always fun to learn about them, especially when you can read stories from different countries from around the world! Our fellow mermaid, Melissa, sent us this wonderful link, and we just had to share it with all of you. There are stories from cultures around the world!

Humanity.org has a section full folklore from around the world…and they even have a section of mermaid stories! All of them are fabulous, but Melissa’s favorite was definitely The Mermaid’s Twin Sister, from Trinidad. We couldn’t agree more! Brew a hot cup of coffee and settle in, because these tales are all worth the read! Thank you for sharing Melissa. We love them all!
