Happy Little Cottages By The Sea

Cottage Charm, Coastal Calm

Tybee Island

Thursday on the Island

A typical day on our little coastal sea island:

  • Squirty the loggerhead sea turtle was released on the beach with hundreds of people cheering him on. Squirty said goodbye to the land and hello to the sea and went right to the ocean and swam off to enjoy the rest of his life as the wild sea creature that he is…. The Burton 4H Center will be receiving another baby turtle in the near future to raise and help educate the 100’s of children who attend the camp. We’ll be posting pictures of the release soon on this blog.
  • Fiddler Crabs at Fiddler on the Creek Cottage! I needed to stop by the cottage and went out to the dock and deck to admire the incredible beauty of the salt marsh. There all over the deck flooring were Fiddler Crabs! It was low tide and the little guys were all over the marsh mud and crawled up the dock. So much fun to see!
  • Storm clouds- summer storms are here, big black clouds rolling in and much needed rain fell on the island. Hot, hot, hot all week, the temputure hit 100 and with the heat index, over 105…..
  • Met with some of our exceptional City of Tybee team- we’re working on the grand opening for the Tybee Bark Parks ( new names for our dog parks) and Bryan and Chantell shared with me some of the other very exciting plans for the City….. I will DEFINETLY be sharing the updates with everyone soon as more details are firmed up. Be assured that the city officals are working hard to make this community the best she can be!
  • Helped out at Sea Side Sisters Coastal Cottage shop today. The shop looks better then ever and is still filled with wonderful beachy treats for yourself or your home.
  • And- countdown to the Summer Olympics! Tommorrow night is the opening ceremony! One of the true high lights of my life was attending with my family the Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. We had nose bled seats but it truly did not matter. I’ll never forget that evening as long as I live!
  • See everyone tommorrow at Douglas unveiling of Rhapel the Magnificient Sea Turtle!

Beach Accessibility – interesting info to share!

The City of Tybee Island continues to welcome visitors of all levels of mobility and has several amenities to help the mobility impaired to enjoy the beach as well, mainly, though not exclusively, focused on the more popular beach at the south end of the island.

Thus far, the City has invested $45,000 installing and maintaining Mobi-mats at the dune crossovers at Gulick Street, Second Avenue (also known as the East Gate cross-over), and at 18th Street at the south end of the parking lot on the Strand. These crossovers have no stairs to navigate, and the Mobi-mats provide proximity from the hard surface at the end of the wooden crossover to the harder sand at the tide line. Besides making the beach more accessible to wheelchairs, the Mobi-mats help to guide all visitors away from sensitive dune areas and protect some of the sand from erosion. They are removable for storage in case of extreme emergency. Joe Wilson, head of the City’s Department of Public Works, has an on-going strategy at these crossovers to extend the wooden walkways closer to the high tide mark to reduce the amount of Mobi-mat required at each site. This would in turn reduce costs while improving access. The wooden walkway extensions will take place over the next several years based on continual inspection results at each site.

The Ocean Rescue Headquarters can supply specialized beach wheelchairs at no charge for temporary use. Their office is located just outside the Tybee Island Marine Science Center and next to the Parker Pier and Pavilion. The wheelchairs have very large, hard-plastic wheels which allow them to roll more easily over sand. Built entirely of plastic, they will not rust in the sea air. These wheelchairs have been made available to the City by individual donations as well as under a grant written by Fran Todd from Living Independence for Everyone (LIFE), Inc. Due to limited availability of these two very popular wheelchairs, they cannot be held or reserved and must be returned by the end of each day. To check on current availability before heading to the beach, lifeguards can be reached at (912) 786-4573, x119.

Spending a day at the beach should be pleasant without having to search for a restroom. Portable restrooms can be found at many of dune crossovers along the island beaches and accessible restrooms are also provided at the north beach and south beach parking lots. With the Strand re-development effort, restrooms attached to the old Parking Services building were removed. Due to FEMA regulations, a permanent and accessible replacement facility at ground level is restricted. An portable, ADA-compliant, air-conditioned restroom in the 18th Street parking lot provides an accessible facility that is easily serviced. This structure can also be moved away from the beach, to meet those FEMA requirements in the event of an emergency such as a hurricane. These facilities cost over $18,000 per year.

This Weekend on the Island

Three fun events are happening this weekend on the Island!
1. Side walk sale at Seaside Sisters Saturday and Sunday. 10AM- 6PM both days. www.seasidesisterstybee.com
2. Tybee Prom– an annual favorite for locals and visitors alike. Saturday July 26th
Though proms of the past were famous for their punch and cookies, the Tybee Prom will bow to the pressure to have “serious” food. Inside the Legion, your prom ticket to benefit Tybee Beautification will entitle you to bar snacks — nuts, Chex Mix, and M&Ms. Outside the Legion, the Marine Rescue Squadron will be selling their WORLD FAMOUS HOMEMADE BRUNSWICK STEW to benefit MRS! This is not your ordinary stew, but rather a hearty mix with everything in it including chicken, BBQ, and some secret ingredients. And a cup of stew will be a lot easier to eat without having to sit at a table. After all, this is a dance…not a dinner! J Please pass the word and bring some cash! Thanks for your support of these two vital Tybee volunteer organizations!
Tybee Prom, Saturday, Tybee American Legion, 7 pm to midnight, Music by the Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love, Psychedelic Summer of Love, Tickets $20 a person at the door. Please call 272-9200 for more information. There will be a spotted volunteer photographer, Miki Skelton, taking photos at the Prom.

Tybee Breeze Magazine

We have this great local FREE publication on Tybee that everyone reads- both our visitors and our locals. Shannon and Sundi Marino are the publishers/ editors and do a great job capturing the quirkness and charm of our Island. We make sure all our homes have the current issue for our guests to enjoy because it’s just so much fun.

The current issue has outdone itself- and the best part is, none of this was written tongue in cheek- but real ads and articles. Here’s what had me LOL last night when I read the current issue. This is an ad for The Crab Cab ( how smart is that name!) which is the only on island taxi cab. Here’s what the Ad reads:
Cab Driver Wanted:
  • Full or part time
  • Must be Tybee resident
  • Must be able to work some late nights
  • Paid in cash every day
  • Great for retire male or female
  • Good driving record a must
  • No drunks or druggies
  • Call 912 441 3304

Now what has me laughing is where else but in Tybee ( or prehaps Key West) do we have to spell out we don’t want drunks or druggies driving our cabs….

So while here, please feel confidant that you can indeed call The Crab Cab and have sober and clean drivers!
