Sea Turtle Season: Tybee Island’s Sea Turtle season runs from May 1st thru Oct 31st. During this time Loggerhead Sea Turtles come to our beaches to lay their eggs, and 60 days later hatch, and the babies race to the sea.

Mermaid Cottages has always been a proud supporter of the NESTS program and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center Sea Turtle Project. A Wrap-up to the Tybee Turtle Season

Great news! Nest Number Nine hatched September 16th! There were a few reports of disoriented babies, but they all made it to the waiting waves just fine. The wonderful people with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project excavated the evening of  September 20th and in all, 45 healthy babies hatched! There were no stragglers or casualties left in the nest, so this nest was a super success!

Tybee Island’s sea turtle Nest Eight began hatching Wednesday, September 7th! Thee were babies reported on the beach Thursday morning, though they all seemed to have made it to the water safely. There were even babies emerging Friday afternoon! This beautiful picture was shared by Nancy Futral on the Tybee Sea Turtle Project Facebook Page wall and shows one little guy making his way to the waves!

Nancy is a wonderful example of someone who knows just what to do if you spot a sea turtle on the beach! Like Nancy, always call for assistance and never touch the sea turtles- they are protected by the Endangered Species Act. The wonderful volunteers with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project will be able to assist the babies as needed. If you find a sea turtle, turtle tracks, or an unmarked nest, please contact these resources in the following order: Tammy, Sea Turtle Project Coordinator – 912.484.3416, Tybee Island Marine Science Center – 912.786.5917, and Georgia DNR – 800.241.4113.

Nest Eight was excavated yesterday evening about 7:30 p.m. and a nice sized group showed up to watch and learn! There were loads of hatched eggs and two live stragglers! The two babies were helped along and made their way to the ocean safe to start their journey. Remember, excavations are open to the public, so if you are on the island and can make it, please feel free! Stay up to date on all the nest activity on the official Tybee Sea Turtle Project page on Facebook! Tybee is still watching Nest Nine for any signs of hatching, so there will be more sea turtle news to come!

Tybee Island Sea Turtle News!

The summer season might be coming to an end, but Tybee Island‘s sea turtle season is still going strong! Our Nest 5 hatched Tuesday, August 16th, and the wonderful people with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project excavated Saturday evening. Excavations are open to the public, so there was a pretty good crowd there to watch and learn! There were no live stragglers or casualties found – just hatched eggs. Wonderful news! In all, 60 to 80 babies made their way to the waiting waves.

That’s not all either! Nest 6 hatched Wednesday, August 17th. It was a good thing Sybil from the Tybee Sea Turtle Project was there, too! The action began before the sun fully set, so she was able to make sure the babies made their way safely to the ocean. The Nest 6 excavation was held Sunday evening. Eighty-one hatched eggs were found, along with 11 undeveloped eggs, no stragglers, but on little guy that didn’t make it. That’s sad news, but not uncommon. Over all, the nest was a success!
