It’s February and that means it’s A Whole Month of Puppy Love With Mermaid Cottages!  All month, pets stay free and some pet guests even receive a Mini Morsel Pet Portrait Session with Oh Joy!  And, while you’re here, be sure to get out and enjoy all the pet friendly adventures around Tybee Island and Savannah!  For instance, this coming Sunday, February 8th, is Super Museum Sunday! Join the Georgia Historical Society from noon-4 p.m. for Super Museum Sunday when over 40 cultural institutions, historic sites, house museums, art museums, and other points of interest in Savannah and coastal Georgia open their doors to the public.  The event is free and open to the public (For more information contact the Georgia Historical Society).

In particular, I love the pet adventures when I visit Fort Pulaksi National Monument.  This national treasure has it all.  There are interpretive programs, miles of lush walking trails through more than 5000 acres of coastal marshlands, a 150 year old lighthouse, and an abundance of wildlife. Dogs are allowed throughout the grounds; just remember they must be leashed and under their owner’s control at all times.

From the time you’re greeted by the gate entrance staff, you’ll understand this is wonderful place to spend the day.  Everyone who works here or volunteers here has pride in the fort’s appearance and operation.  Tours are leisurely and interesting and there’s something about seeing it all first hand.  I learn something new each time I visit and I’m always anxious to share the experience with new guests and with my own Wag Pack.

After touring the fort, we always wander out back of the fort.  Sometimes, we venture out along the back beach area where the dogs can run and frolick along the water’s edge.  Other times, we make an afternoon of it with a trek through the marsh paths out to Cockspur Lighthouse.  It’s quite the long walk, but it’s a welcome treasure on those days when I just need to some time away from technology and to just enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the marshes.  Cockspur is so beautiful from the water and walking up to it from land adds a new perspective.
