Mermaids Make a Difference

We’re Running The Trash Out Of Town!

If you enjoyed the beauty of our Tybee Island beaches this weekend just thank the assortment of mermaids and mermen and visitors and wonderful locals that participated in the Mermaid Cottages Beach Sweep this past Friday!

We had so much fun we’re gonna do it again and this time we’re running the trash out of town!

Everyone is invited to join the Tybee Beautification Association for the next Beach Sweep on Monday, July 4th at 6:30 AM.  Meet us at the Tybee Pavilion to get your gloves, trash bags and trash grabbers and let’s show our Tybee Beach Pride and celebrate our nation’s Independence Day.  Also, it’s our way of welcoming our favorite moms from the sea, the Tybee Sea Turtles, and we want them to have the cleanest beaches for their nests!

Now, we’re not doing away with the word “trash” completely.  We still need plenty of “trash” talk for Pirate Fest, Beach Bum Weekend and for the opponents of our local sports teams.  The more we keep our beaches free of trash the more time we’ll have to indulge in “trash” talk fun!

1001 Ways To Get Tybee-ized: Tybee Flotilla!

In the Navy?  Nope!  It’s the TYBEE FLOTILLA 2011!

FLOAT FOR THE CHILDREN

Sunday, June 12

11 AM-4 PM

Here’s your invitation from Tybee Flotilla 2011

We shove off from Alley III at 1130am sharp on Sunday June 12th, make a pit stop by Criminal Island until the tide covers, and end at The Crab Shack by 330pm. Please do not stop reading here. The next part is the most important. A few things are going to change in an effort to make this event more safe. I’m sure we all can agree that safety is #1! If you do not agree please do not attend. Last year I made the request that everyone attach a life jacket to their raft. This year is no different. Although they may not be required by law, it definately provides a ring of safety! Also, the !Floatilla! does require some paddleing and swimming depending on the current and wind. When we shove off you will need to paddle out to the middle of the Back River in an attempt to get into the current. Boats and kayaks are encouraged and I ask that everyone looks out for their fellow floater! I am going to try to get the Marine Rescue Squad, Tybee Island Ocean Rescue, and the Coast Guard to assist. For those of you who doubt the popualrity of this event please look at the pictures…they will expain! Once we enter Chimney Creek, there is a dock that has a slide on it. This is private property. It is less than 6 feet at low tide….I BEG you not to jump/slide off. Last year a two girls got landed on by a 200lb+ guy….it wasnt pretty. When we arrive at the Crab Shack there will be volenteers there to help everyone get out the water. Please wait your turn and use the ladder. There were a few guys/girls who got cut on the barnicles trying to pull theirselves up. Once you get on the dock the volenteers will be funneling you off the docks. We CAN NOT stay on the docks like last year. There will be a float break down area in the parking lot. This will end the event….please take care of the Crab Shack becasue they do not have to let us use our docks and they have donated money to the cause every time!

ALCOHOL: What’s a day on the water without an alcholic beverage? I always bring an extra float to sit my cooler in. All I ask if for everyone to use moderation and be 21 or over. Alcohol+heat+salt water=drunk. We have only had one or two problems with alcohol related issues so please drink in moderation. Remember this !Floatilla! is on a Sunday. I heard nothing but great remarks last year about how no one could believe that there was no litter in the water. tes, we have a few bad apples but i saw other floaters picking up after them which was great! Let’s keep up the good reputation…..

EVERYONE WHO ATTENDS AND ENTERS THE WATER DOES SO AT THEIR OWN RISK!!

PARKING: Two options! 1. park at the Crab Shack and either hitch a ride to Alley III or call 912 786 CRAB. 2. Park at Alley III and hitch a ride back to Alley III from the Crab Shack or call 912 786 CRAB. They will have cabs available all day. Please if you park at the Crab Shack, park all the way in the back so we do not disturd the paying customers parking.

ALL proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald House. This is how we raise money…please bring cash with you. Koozies will also be sold. They were a huge hit last year! Koozies are $5. Designs will be posted when available. If you cant attend and just want to donate to the !Floatilla! “Will Float for Kids” send a check to 1810 Walthour Road Savannah Ga 31410 and make the check out to the Ronald McDonald House. If you dont want to float come join us for sunday Funday at the Crab Shack at 3pm. Last but not least, we will have collection points at Alley III and the Crab Shack for tabs from cans. Please start saving now.

1001 Ways To Get Tybee-ized: KEEP TYBEE TIDY!

Mermaid Cottages will sponsor a BEACH SWEEP on Friday, June 24th!

9 AM-11:00 AM we’ll be walking the beach to  pick up, clean up and spruce up our island paradise.  It’s Sea Turtle nesting season, so we want our beaches to look their best for our mamas from the sea.

We’re inviting our guests, Tybee residents and all mermaids and mermen to join with us as Mermaids Make a Difference!  We’ll meet by the Tybee Visitors Booth at the roundabout in downtown Tybee.   Trash bags, gloves and trash grabbers will be provided.

Make your vacation count!  Keep Tybee Tidy!

Remembering ways we can individually help keep our beautiful island tidy on a day to day basis helps, too!  We can all be diligent about placing our trash  in proper receptacles, clean up behind ourselves and our pets, and even use disposable containers and bags when possible to reduce waste.

Keeping our island neat and clean isn’t just important to us, but for all of our wonderful wildlife and beach ecology, too.  Thanks for helping our island stay pristine and beautiful!   Keep Tybee Tidy!

MTLC + CPR = Happy Tails

Mermaid Cottages’ famous MTLC or Mermaids Tender Loving Care gets extended to our guests and our community and to everyone we meet.  Coastal Pet Rescue or CPR saves pet lives and enriches ours every single day.  Today is the day you can help, too.  Here’s Lisa Scarbrough, the angel behind Coastal Pet Rescue and the Online Community Editor for Paula Deen, to tell you how!

If you know Paula, you know that she is a big animal lover. It was one of just the many things that made me so happy to come and work for her. Paula is a woman after my own heart, with her menagerie of birds, chickens, and dogs. If that isn’t enough, she even provided us with an office cat, Norma Jean, who sits in on some of our meetings and makes sure everyone stays in line.

For the last nine months, I have been mom to a beautiful baby boy. But for the 31 years before that, I was foster mom to hundreds of stray pets. About ten years ago, I started rescuing pets on my own, which led to me founding Coastal Pet Rescue here in Savannah on my 23rd birthday in 2003. I was ecstatic when Paula decided to adopt an orange tabby from me shortly after I joined her team.

If you can imagine, running an all-volunteer non-profit can be rather taxing, and certainly not cheap. On top of veterinary expenses and providing for food, there’s a lot of travel involved, which means money for the gas and more miles on our main “puppymobile.” That’s why we look to grants and contests to help us with funding, and right now, we have a very big opportunity.

The CPR “puppymobile” has various uses, such as rescuing a mom and her seven puppies from an animal control shelter where they would have otherwise been euthanized, collecting 127 pounds of pet fur to be stuffed in oil booms along the Gulf Coast (May 2010), and delivering supplies to an animal shelter in Rome, GA to feed animals displaced by tornadoes (April 2011).

On Sunday, May 29th, you can log on to the Toyota USA Facebook page and help Coastal Pet Rescue win a brand new Toyota SUV to help transport pets. Our current vehicle is over 11 years old and has over 187,000 miles on it. How wonderful would it be to be for us to save money on repairs and be assured that our transports will be safe for the pets and volunteers? Best of all, it doesn’t cost anymore than a couple minutes of your time.

Here’s how to vote:

1. On Sunday, May 29th (not before, not after), go to http://www.facebook.com/toyota

2. Like their page.

3. Click the “100 Cars for Good” link on the left.

4. Vote for Coastal Pet Rescue by clicking the box next to “Vote.”

5. Click the checkbox to confirm your vote, then click “confirm” again.

(Only one vote per Facebook account.)

Lisa Scarbrough offers mom-on-a-dime advice for parents like her who still hold out hope that they’ll be able to afford the rising costs of college tuition (yeah, right). Course, Lisa has some time to prepare; her son, Ian, is 8-months old. Lisa lives in Guyton, GA, and when she’s not cleaning sweet potatoes off her son’s face, she serves as the Online Community Manager for Paula Deen.
