It’s Lights On for the Holidays at Tybee’s only performing arts and movie theater! After remaining dark since the middle of March due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tybee Post Theater is lighting up the Theater with a glorious holiday light display that should be the backdrop of every Tybee Christmas card photo.

Even better, the Theater is finally opening its doors and welcoming the Tybee community and its visitors to a spirit-lifting series of holiday movies every weekend in December.

The movies will start screening Thanksgiving weekend and continue through Christmas. We’ll get a chance to see everything from “A Christmas Story” and “A Christmas Carol” to “Elf,” “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and “Scrooged” on the big screen. And don’t we all need a break from our small screens!

The holiday movies will be screened twice a day, at 3 & 7 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with titles changing each day. Fridays will feature some of the most popular holiday movies; Saturdays will feature the classics, and Sundays will be strictly family-friendly fare. The first weekend in December, for example, will feature “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on Friday, “A Christmas Story” on Saturday and “Elf” on Sunday. You’ve seen these movies time and time again on your televisions, but there is really nothing like the theatrical experience in your own historic hometown cinema with family and friends.

The Theater has spent the past few months redefining the theater experience with the health and safety of its patrons, staff and volunteers at the forefront of updated safety and sanitation policies.

Most important, the theater will operate at a significantly lower capacity. Only 35 percent of the seats will sold for any show, allowing for greater than 6-foot social distancing between family groups. Movie tickets will be general admission and ushers will assist households in seating themselves at comfortable distances from others. Other safety procedures include:

• Touch-free hand sanitizer stations will be available at the box office, as well as in the lobby and auditorium
• Staff and volunteers will be wearing masks, and concessions staff also wear gloves
• Face coverings will be required for all guests when not eating or drinking in your seats
• High-touch areas, such as counter tops and door handles, will be sanitized during the shows
• The auditorium will be disinfected with a fogger between every screening
• Contactless ticketing and payment options will be available
