Mermaids in Our Midst: Jane and The Jitterbug Bakery

We’re so excited around here! Our good friend Jane is embarking on a major adventure, and she wants to take Tybee Island right along with her!

Jane Wells is the UX and community lead for WordPress, and she lives here on Tybee. Before she was a web design guru, she was a cook, baker, and manager of healthy cafes and kitchens in tourist lodges. Now, she has a mission to bring both her loves together!

The Jitterbug Bakery will bring a few things to Tybee that she is sorely missing! Jane hopes to open her bakery and provide Tybee Island with a go-to place for coffee, pastry, and yummy vegetarian options. And that’s not all! The Jitterbug will be a space where the community can relax, connect, and even learn!

She’s got the plan in motion, but she needs our help! You can read more about this wonderful project over on her Kickstarter Project page! Not only is there loads of info on her vision for The Jitterbug Bakery, you can learn exactly how you can make this plan a reality for Jane and for Tybee Island! You can even follow Jane through her start-up process and the progress of the entire project at her site, BuyJaneABakery.com! There, you’ll find her blog, information on the project, a link to ways you can help her achieve her goal, and even The Jitterbug Bakery menu!

We can’t wait to help, and we are so excited to see where this adventure leads! Please join us in support of The Jitterbug Bakery. Jane, Mermaid Cottages, and Tybee Island will thank you!

Mermaid Sighting: Amazing Mermaid Art

We love everything mermaid around here, so when we came across the work of the amazingly talented Sheila Wolk, we had to share! Sheila does all sorts of fantasy art, but of course, her mermaids have us speechless! The detail, the color, the majesty…it’s all too perfect for words!

Metamorphosis by the amazingly talented Sheila Wolk

Make sure you check out her website to see all the amazing artwork there. Sheila even has a shop where you can buy loads of her wonderful lovelies! What talent! We couldn’t pick a favorite; they are all gorgeous!

Have you seen a mermaid? Well, we’d love to hear about it! Please send your sightings and stories to diane@mermaidcottages. We’d love for your sighting to be the next one featured right here on our blog!

Mermaid Tale: Mimosa Cottage

Welcome to Mimosa Cottage!

Welcome to Mimosa Cottage on Tybee Island! This completely restored and decorated 1940’s family beach cottage is just perfect for your next Tybee getaway.  This home sleeps seven comfortably, so it’s great for anyone looking to have plenty of room, but still stay cozy. Mimosa Cottage is also ground level, so it’s perfect for anyone wanting to avoid a lot of stair climbing.

Chip loves visiting Mimosa Cottage!

Your cottage has a comfy, relaxing screened porch to enjoy the salty sea air, and a large patio to soak up Tybee’s beautiful island sunshine. The home has a fenced in yard as well, so it’s safe for your kiddies to play or your pets to enjoy a lap or two around the yard! That’s right, pets are more than welcome at Mimosa Cottage, so don’t leave them behind!

Your beach retreat is just two houses away from Flip Flop Cottage, three away from Maddie’s on Jones, and a few houses away from Key Lime Parrot and The Shrimp Cottages. It’s an ideal set up for two or three families looking to vacation together, but still maintain their own space. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Tybee's beautiful fishing pier.

Mimosa Cottage is close to everything Tybee Island has to offer, so make sure to explore every nook and cranny during your stay. The sights and sounds of beautiful Historic Savannah, Georgia are also only a 20 minute drive from your door. There’s no shortage of sight-seeing around here!

If being a beach bum is more your style, spend your days relaxing on our gorgeous beaches, then come home to everything you could need while on island time. Your cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, free high speed and WiFi internet, a stereo system, and cable television.  There’s even an outdoor shower (hot and cold water!) for refreshing yourself after those hours of beach combing bliss.

Mimosa Cottage is just missing one thing...YOU!

Don’t wait another minute…Mimosa Cottage has dates open right now for your special trip. Book your visit today or give us a call at 912.313.0784. We can’t wait to help make your Mermaid Cottages dreams come true!

Wild local Georgia Shirmp & Grits

Made an absolutely wonderful dinner tonight- wild Georgia shrimp and stone ground grits. I couldn’t believe how yummy the dinner turned out! Nothing better on a winter night (even when its only 50 degees outside!)  The grits has cheese which made them even better!

Mermen in Our Midst: Bryan Schroeder

Bryan and family at a past Oyster Roast!

If you know anything about Mermaid Cottages, you know we love giving back to our community. One way we do that is by working with the Georgia Conservancy. Well, in our time doing that, we make some pretty good friends along the way, and one such friend is Bryan Schroeder. Bryan the Stewardship and Outreach Director for the Georgia Conservancy, and he does an amazing job! We were chatting with Bryan about the up coming 2012 Oyster Roast and decided to ask Bryan what it is he loves about Georgia and her coast.

“I am a former Savannah resident; I lived on Anderson and Abercorn while my fiancé Danielle was getting her doctorate at Armstrong Atlantic. I currently live in midtown Atlanta. I certainly miss spending my mornings drinking sentient bean coffee and taking walks in Forsyth Park!

George, enjoying Forsyth Park!

Danielle and I both love the coast and have so much fun visiting with our dog, George! George is definitely the star in our family and the unofficial mascot of the Georgia Conservancy. He has been on my with trips from Cloudland Canyon to Ft. McAllister State Park, the site of our 2010 Oyster Roast. George will be greeting folks this year at the Georgia Conservancy’s Oyster Roast on March 3rd at Captain Butlers on Whitemarsh Island. We are so thankful for Mermaid Cottages donating the proceeds from visitors to the Oyster Roast to the Georgia Conservancy! It is going to make a huge impact!

We love visiting Tybee Island! The best thing about Mermaid Cottages is that they are affordable, well appointed and dog friendly! We can’t wait to be down there in just a few weeks!”

Thanks so much for sharing Bryan! We can’t wait to see you guys next weekend for all the oyster roast fun. It’s sure to be a huge success!
