If you haven’t had the chance, make sure you check out The Lettered Cottage blog. Clear your schedule, because you’ll be hooked! Kevin and Layla pour every ounce of passion and talent they have into their blog and projects. In their own words, they are “enthusiastically passionate about writing stories, making music, and interior design.”  The Lettered Cottage began as a place for them to share their projects, life, and basically document their passions. The photography is gorgeous, the projects and stories are always engaging…The Lettered Cottage should simply be on everyone’s daily reading list!

We were fortunate enough here at Mermaid Cottages to have Kevin and Layla visit with us a few times! They have featured two of our cottages in their wonderful Guest My Nest feature. They also put their talents to work in our Screened Inn and Enlisted Men’s Mess Hall Cottages!

As if interior design talent weren’t enough, The Lettered Cottage couple has some serious photography skills under their belt! Kevin recently had his amazing photography of Mermaid Manor featured in Flea Market Style, and he has even started ShootFlyShoot.com to help all you budding photographers out there learn how to shoot like a pro!

Live Like a Local: Fort Pulaski

Most people know a visit to Tybee Island means beautiful beaches, salty sea air, and sand in your toes. Coming to Tybee means escaping to a slower pace and more relaxing place. Sure, escaping to paradise is a pretty good reason for wanting to plan a trip to our lovely island, but did you know there’s more to Tybee Island than just the beach?

When you stay at any of our Mermaid Cottages, you are mere minutes from everything Tybee Island has to offer. There are, of course, our beautiful beaches, but we have many other attractions to tempt travelers as well! One such must-see while on Tybee Island is Fort Pulaski.

Fort Pulaski is steeped in history! The fort was built between 1829 and 1847 on Cockspur Island near the mouth of the Savannah River and was intended to defend the city of Savannah from foreign attacks and invasion. Today, the fort is a beautifully preserved example of 19th century military architecture you simply have to see to believe.

Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can tour the fort and learn more about the history of the grand structure, the area, and it’s role in the Civil War and beyond. There are indoor exhibits as well as opportunities for outdoor activities, chances to experience  area wildlife, and even do a little bird watching! You can even participate in guided tours. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Fort Pulaski is located between Tybee Island and Savannah on Highway 80. You are a short 5 to 10 minute drive from any Mermaid Cottage to the fort…not to mention just 20 minutes to Historic Downtown Savannah! It’s just one of the many attractions on our island that you shouldn’t miss during your stay!

Don’t wait, Tybee Island has so much to offer! Plan a trip today! We can’t wait to make your Mermaid Dreams come true!

Mermaids in Our Midst: Jessica and Family from New Mexico

We love hearing from our guest about their Mermaid Cottages stay. Hearing from you helps us make sure we are doing everything we can to make your Tybee Island escape perfect, so it makes our heart smile to see notes like this one from Jessica all the way in Albuquerque, New Mexico!

“The perfect vacation home for our family! We loved everything about Crabby Jo’s! The bedrooms were a bit small but that wasn’t a problem. There were 3 adults, 1 teenager, and 2 small children in our party (with numerous visitors during the day) and we all fit just fine. The extra showers downstairs were perfect for hosing off before venturing in after a day at the beach. While not “baby proofed” I felt comfortable letting my kids (age 3 and 11 months) wander freely about the home – it was very clean and well-kept. The beach, just steps away, was a dream! We even saw baby turtle tracks! The rest of Tybee Island was wonderful as well – we ate a number of local restaurants, visited numerous shops, hung out at the pier, and even purchased some kitschy art to bring back home to New Mexico- a giant fish made out of scrap metal and an old boogie board! We drove nearly 27 hours to visit Tybee (with 2 wee ones in the car) and I’d do it all over again. I’d definitely stay at Crabby Jo’s again, too. Thank you for sharing your home with us!” ~Jessica M. from New Mexico

We are so excited your family vacation was such a success, Jessica! That’s quite a drive, so we’re glad you were able to relax and enjoy your stay after such a journey. We love to hear you fell for Tybee, and we can’t wait to see you again! Don’t be a stranger!

Have you stayed with us at Mermaid Cottages? We’d love to hear about your stay! Please take a moment to share your thoughts on our Mermaid Cottages Facebook Page, or shoot us and email at diane@mermaidcottages.com. We love hearing from you!
