Help Us Name that Cottage!

It’s that time again! We have a new cottage in our family here at Mermaid Cottages, and we need your help giving it a name! This contest will work the same as our last one, with a poll over on our Mermaid Cottages Facebook Page. Remember, you can’t vote here! If you want your vote to count, you have to cast it in the Facebook Poll! We already have the names to choose from, we just need your help picking the best one!

It might be a little easier for you to choose a name if you know more about the cottage…so here’s a little background! This lovely home was built in 1942 and is now owned by the daughter of the previous owner, distinguished sculptor Weis Cain Snell of Atlanta. Mr. Snell worked with muesums all over, including Atlanta Cyclorama, and he actually helped design and create Tybee’s own museum!

Our new cottage is located at 1012 Jone Avenue, only a four block stroll to the beach! The home has been fully restored and freshly decorated, and it will be available for guests starting Memorial Day weekend. The cottage has two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, a beautiful screened porch, and is pet friendly! You and your pet will enjoy the fenced back yard, complete with a hammock under palm trees. Just look at these wonderful pictures!

Now, if you are interested in planning a trip to this cottage, please call 912-655-6525 or email me at diane@mermaidcottages.com! But remember, we have to name this beauty! The list of names to think about is:

  • Little Acorn Cottage
  • Shady Oak Cottage
  • Made in the Shade
  • Shady Acres

Remember, don’t vote here… Click HERE to head on over to the official Facebook Poll to cast your vote for your favorite name! The poll will close and the contest will end Monday, April 25th, at 6 p.m. so make sure you vote before then! We can’t wait to see which name comes out on top!

What’s The Story, Morning Glory?

Just like the opening line from a song in Bye, Bye Birdie , “What’s the story, morning glory” it pays tribute to those early risers that shine and open up most often at the start of the day.  The Victorian “Language of Flowers” states that the Morning Glory flower represents “love in vain”.  Imagine, the type of flowers you give to someone has unspoken meaning, but between lovers it says alot!

Morning Glory is the common name for over 1000 different species of flowering plants and they may belong to many genera.  Most morning glories curl up and close during the warmer parts of the day, but on cloudy days they sometimes stay open all the way until night.

Since our little island hamlet is usually frost free, these beautiful flowers can often be regarded as perennials.  Whatever their species or genera, perennials or annuals we just think these Morning Glory flowers are truly glorious morning, noon and night!

1001 Ways To Get Tybee-ized: Confederate Jasmine

If it looks like jasmine, smells like jasmine, acts like jasmine it should be jasmine, right?

Just look at this beautiful Confederate Jasmine that welcomes you to our wonderful Blue Heron Cottage!

Confederate Jasmine, also known as Star Jasmine, is not a true jasmine, but it is referred to as jasmine because of its fragrant, jasmine like flowers.

New growth starts out with light green, lance-shaped leaves and soon matures to a glossy, dark green color that produces clusters of white star shaped flowers.  This usually occurs in late spring or early summer in most places, but on Tybee it’s happening right now!  Once established this fast growing evergreen vine can be trained to climb where you want it.  It’s especially beautiful on fences, pergolas, pillars and trees.  Just pinch the tips to keep it trimmed and it even makes a beautiful shrub and it is very effective as a weed choking ground cover!  Those of you that are especially talented at training greenery will find this an excellent choice for topiaries, trailing containers and hanging baskets.

It’s just one of the many extraordinary and exotic spring surprises you’ll find while strolling the gorgeous neighborhoods on Tybee!  Just grab your leash and your dog, invite family and friends and discover the wonders in our island gardens!
