Live Like a Local: Fort Pulaski

Most people know a visit to Tybee Island means beautiful beaches, salty sea air, and sand in your toes. Coming to Tybee means escaping to a slower pace and more relaxing place. Sure, escaping to paradise is a pretty good reason for wanting to plan a trip to our lovely island, but did you know there’s more to Tybee Island than just the beach?

When you stay at any of our Mermaid Cottages, you are mere minutes from everything Tybee Island has to offer. There are, of course, our beautiful beaches, but we have many other attractions to tempt travelers as well! One such must-see while on Tybee Island is Fort Pulaski.

Fort Pulaski is steeped in history! The fort was built between 1829 and 1847 on Cockspur Island near the mouth of the Savannah River and was intended to defend the city of Savannah from foreign attacks and invasion. Today, the fort is a beautifully preserved example of 19th century military architecture you simply have to see to believe.

Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can tour the fort and learn more about the history of the grand structure, the area, and it’s role in the Civil War and beyond. There are indoor exhibits as well as opportunities for outdoor activities, chances to experience  area wildlife, and even do a little bird watching! You can even participate in guided tours. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Fort Pulaski is located between Tybee Island and Savannah on Highway 80. You are a short 5 to 10 minute drive from any Mermaid Cottage to the fort…not to mention just 20 minutes to Historic Downtown Savannah! It’s just one of the many attractions on our island that you shouldn’t miss during your stay!

Don’t wait, Tybee Island has so much to offer! Plan a trip today! We can’t wait to make your Mermaid Dreams come true!

Sigh.

Luckily the sands of time have not buried my love of a good meal and on a recent foray into Savannah with my favorite assortment of mermaids and seaside sisters, I enjoyed a delicious expedition into the world of spices courtesy of Sol Restaurant.   Tucked away in what once was an old service station on Habersham, Sol still sports garage doors that identify the dining space.

My meal was so spectacular I won’t spend my time trying to remember what any of my …
