Sea Turtles

Live Like a Local: The 8th Annual Tybee Turtle Trot 5K Beach Run, April 28!

This Saturday, April 28th, is the 8th Annual Tybee Turtle Trot! The Tybee community looks forward to this 5K beach run every year! This amazing race is an annual event to raise funds for the Tybee Sea Turtle Project and is the kick off to Coastal Georgia’s sea turtle nesting season.

Come be a part of helping Tybee Island's sea turtles!

Georgia’s sea turtle season runs from May through October, and we do our best here on Tybee to make sure our sea turtles have the best nesting season ever! Sea Turtle Project Volunteers participate in daily dawn patrols to check for nests laid during the night. When a nest is found, the site is evaluated and any nests below the high tide line are carefully relocated. The nests are protected my marking them off, and daily monitoring. Its truly an amazing sight to discover a nest, and even more exciting to see the nest reach it’s boil, when the newly hatched sea turtles emerge from the nest and strike out toward the ocean! If you can’t make it to Tybee during sea turtle season, make sure to follow the Tybee Sea Turtle Project on Facebook!

It is so important to do everything we can to help sea turtles have their best chance at life! That’s just one reason we are avid supporters of the Tybee Turtle Trot! Help us help the sea turtles and join us this Saturday at the race! You can register online or even download a form on the race site. It is a $25 registration fee, or just $20 for members of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. Register before April 24th for your free tee shirt! Sign in starts at 7:00 a.m.and the race begins at 8:00 a.m. Just come and watch if running isn’t your thing, because there will also be a sea turtle release by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center around 9:30 a.m., all right in front of the Marine Science Center! We hope to see you there. Join us and get your trot on!

Making a Difference, Mermaid Style!

Welcome to Tybee Island!

Mermaid Cottages has the coziest homes away from home in Tybee Island and Savannah, it’s true. But we’re more than vacation rentals; we’re part of a community. That’s why we are active with the local island community, including helping people and local organizations we believe in and love. That’s what our project, Mermaids Make a Difference, is all about! We invite you to jump right in and volunteer during your visit. Of course, we’d like for you to get involved if even just for the day as well!

Beach Sweep September 2011

We love giving back to our community and want to share every opportunity we know about with you! If you are looking for ways to be more involved, whether it’s during your vacation or just for the day, make sure to check out the Community tab on our website.  It’s a little thing we like to call Voluntourism on Tybee, and we’d love for you to join us in giving a little back! We have a list full of fabulous ways to get in there and give back. There are loads of upcoming events listed for you to choose from, like The Journey to Peace Walk to benefit the SAFE Shelter of Savannah on October 22nd, and The PurpleStride Savannah 5K to raise awareness and funds to fight Pancreatic Cancer November 12th, just to name a few. We also have Beach Sweeps planned on a regular basis, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy! You can even show off your Mermaid pride with a tee shirt from Seaside Sisters, where there are loads of other Mermaid Cottages goodies as well. Goodies that help you give back with each purchase!

Just by staying with Mermaid Cottages you are giving back! Your stay helps us support Tybee’s Sea Turtles and the guide dogs we sponsor each year!

Mermaid Cottages loves Tybee Island, and we know you do, too! We encourage you to take a little time during your visit to Tybee and join us in giving back to the community we hold so dear. We hope to see y’all real soon!

A Wrap-up to the Tybee Turtle Season

photo by Amy Capello from the Tybee Sea Turtle Project

Great news! Nest Number Nine hatched September 16th! There were a few reports of disoriented babies, but they all made it to the waiting waves just fine. The wonderful people with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project excavated the evening of  September 20th and in all, 45 healthy babies hatched! There were no stragglers or casualties left in the nest, so this nest was a super success!

Tybee Island Sea Turtle ProjectIt’s a great way to wrap up the 2011 Tybee Island sea turtle season for sure! Thanks to everyone with the Tybee Sea Turtle Project for all your hard work and dedication. We can’t wait to see what the 2012 season will bring!
