Mermaid Cottages

Help Us Name that Cottage!

It’s that time again! We have a new cottage in our family here at Mermaid Cottages, and we need your help giving it a name! This contest will work the same as our last one, with a poll over on our Mermaid Cottages Facebook Page. Remember, you can’t vote here! If you want your vote to count, you have to cast it in the Facebook Poll! We already have the names to choose from, we just need your help picking the best one!

It might be a little easier for you to choose a name if you know more about the cottage…so here’s a little background! This lovely home was built in 1942 and is now owned by the daughter of the previous owner, distinguished sculptor Weis Cain Snell of Atlanta. Mr. Snell worked with muesums all over, including Atlanta Cyclorama, and he actually helped design and create Tybee’s own museum!

Our new cottage is located at 1012 Jone Avenue, only a four block stroll to the beach! The home has been fully restored and freshly decorated, and it will be available for guests starting Memorial Day weekend. The cottage has two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, a beautiful screened porch, and is pet friendly! You and your pet will enjoy the fenced back yard, complete with a hammock under palm trees. Just look at these wonderful pictures!

Now, if you are interested in planning a trip to this cottage, please call 912-655-6525 or email me at diane@mermaidcottages.com! But remember, we have to name this beauty! The list of names to think about is:

  • Little Acorn Cottage
  • Shady Oak Cottage
  • Made in the Shade
  • Shady Acres

Remember, don’t vote here… Click HERE to head on over to the official Facebook Poll to cast your vote for your favorite name! The poll will close and the contest will end Monday, April 25th, at 6 p.m. so make sure you vote before then! We can’t wait to see which name comes out on top!

Live Like a Local: Earth Day is Every day!

If you didn’t know, Earth Day is right around the corner! That’s right, April 22nd is officially Earth Day, but you don’t have to limit being green to just one special day. Here at Mermaid Cottages, we try to make every day Earth Day!We are all about living a little greener and showing Mother Earth how much we care.

Being green isn’t as difficult as it seems. It is really just a lot of little actions that add up to big benefits when they become habits. We do a lot of those little things to reap the green benefits around here!

First off, we make sure to do as much as we can electronically. We email everything, so there is less printing, which means less wasted paper! All of our cottages use Compact Fluorescent light bulbs, and we install Lo-flow water-saving devices in all of our bathrooms and outdoor showers. Everyone here contributes something to our green philosophy…some of our Mermaids and Mermen ride their bicycles to work, and we clean with all Eco-friendly products. We even do energy audits for all of our cottages to see how we can save even more energy. And outside our homes, we plant drought resistant local plants to help conserve water. We also participate in Tybee’s Community Garden project!

We want to do whatever we can to leave this planet a little better than we found it, and we encourage others to do the same. Just some ways you can help during your stay (and even when you return home!) are:

  • Slay “Vampire Power” by turning off all lights, TVs, DVDs & computers when not in use
  • Use the outdoor clothesline to dry your clothes (they smell good too!)
  • Open the windows turn on the ceiling fans and enjoy the ocean breezes!
  • Use Cold, not Hot in the washing machine
  • Draw your curtains/blinds during the heat of the day
  • Walk, ride bikes, rent scooters or electric cars!
  • Recycle…glass, plastic, cans, newspapers: use the home’s green recycling container!
  • Reduce and Reuse by taking your own bags to the grocery store.
  • While brushing teeth, turn water off, and use a cup of water to cleanse mouth of
    toothpaste.

We could go on and on about fun ways to be Earth friendly! Find ideas-a-plenty on how you can be a little greener on our Being Green page over on our website! This Earth is the only one we’ve got…let’s all be good stewards. We didn’t inherit this planet from our parents, it is on loan to us from future generations, so let’s take good care of our gift! Happy Earth Day Y’all!

Mermaid Sighting: Harris Street, Savannah

We had such a blast a few weekends ago in Savannah at the 187th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and Parade! Well, what holiday is complete without a mermaid? This festive mermaid makes her home in Savannah at East Harris Street!

Gorgeous, and decked out in St. Patty’s Day garb! How fun is that? I hope she enjoyed the celebrations as much as everyone else did!

If you have seen a mermaid, please tell us about it! Send your picture and a little information about it to diane@mermaidcottages.com and we’ll share it right here on our blog for everyone to enjoy!

Your Forever Friend Is Waiting

Your forever friend is waiting.

Will you make the call?
We received this heartfelt letter today from Cynthia Sharpley of EVERYDAY ERRANDS by way of Jane Coslick
Hi Dear Pet Friends,
This dog was found with an awful and tight choke collar around his neck.  And despite it, he is a very loveable and happy boy.  We can learn so much from animals.
He loves car rides. As his rescuer drove him to the vet, he sat in the front seat like a good boy.  He is not neutered, but appears to be a healthy 40 pounds dog.  No microchip was found.  He loves kisses and is a gentle and playful sweetheart.
His rescuer, Leza Shore, already has three rescued dogs of her own and she is unable to keep one more.  She has him temporarily in the garage since one of her dogs is agressive.
If anyone is able to give this boy a temporary or permanent home please contact Leza at
912 224 3566 or ls8735@gmail.com.   If not, please forward this email to others. The more people we can reach the better our chances of finding this sweet guy a good home.
Thank you, as always, for caring.

BEACH SWEEP!

BEACH SWEEP!
Come join us Sunday, February 13 from 3-5 p.m. to walk and clean the south end of Tybee Beach!
It’s time to start preparing for our 2011 Sea Turtle Nesting Season and we want the lovely lady sea turtles to have the most beautiful beach to choose their nesting sites!
Meet us at our newest Mermaid Cottage on the beach, Doyles At The Beach, at #2 18th Lane.
There’s plenty of parking, but as always, the best way to enjoy Tybee Island is to walk or ride a bike.
Bring your own trash bags and bring lots of family and friends!

The less trash there is on the beach the less trash there will be in the beautiful waters off Tybee and this means less chance the sea turtles, dolphins and Right Whales will think the harmful trash is something for them to eat.

Ya’ll Comin?
