Bone Appetite: A Tybee Pawty Girl’s Guide To Seafood

by Maddie, Mermaid Cottages’ Rover Reporter

BARKING NEWS!

My mommy and daddy just booked my favorite Mermaid Cottage, Tybee Tides , for the end of August!  I’m so excited I can hardly get in my usual 5 hour nap!  I can almost taste all the great treats I’m going to eat.

I don’t think I’ve told you about ALL the good food on Tybee, yet.  I know I told you about the fresh jar of Beach Bum Biscuits found in every pet friendly cottage-YUM!  Believe it or not you may want to try some other Tybee specialties, as well.

I LOVE shrimp!  Now, I know most dogs prefer beef or even chicken or pork, but I love seafood!  Shrimp is my absolute favorite and the shrimp on Tybee are the best.  If you are not accustomed to eating so called “human food” you probably shouldn’t read on.  For all of you accomplished beggars out there here’s some of my top choices.

AJ\’s:  My mommy likes the fried shrimp Po Boy and my daddy likes the crab cake sandwich.  They always get carry out so they don’t have to leave me alone.  This is ideal because now I don’t have to depend on leftovers.  Both the crab and the shrimp are very good, but for some reason they won’t give me as much as I’d like.  You’d think the bread and toppings would be enough for them!

Tybee Market:  They have shrimp salad that is ALL shrimp!  The shrimp are so small and delicious you’ll need to be sure your human keeps them coming.  We usually have this for lunch (a fact I’m very aware of).  If for some reason we don’t I turn my back on them and put my nose in my paws.  That’ll show them!

Sundae Cafe:  I recommend the fried fish sandwich from here.  It is very good and huge!  Most humans probably won’t be able to finish it all and this means more for you!

Burton\’s By The Beach:  My mommy gets the shrimp quesadillas from here and we share.  I get the shrimp and she gets the rest-a perfect compromise!  Don’t let the fact that’s it’s Mexican scare you.    They aren’t spicy or I wouldn’t be allowed to eat them.

Now that you’ve tried some seafood you may be thinking it’s time for dessert.  Well, of course you can never go wrong with Beach Bum Biscuits., but I actually like the key lime pie!  This may be an acquired taste, so if it’s not for you just have your human dip your Beach Bum Biscuits in some of their whipped cream.  I wonder if you could make a key lime pie with a Beach Bum Biscuit crust…?

Until next time keep your tails in the air and your noses to whatever is on the table!  HEY!  Where y’all goin’ with that Doggy Bag!

Hershey Kisses!

It’s always a great honor and a great pleasure when our Mermaids Make a Difference on Tybee Island and we’re proud to share that our individual cottages owners also do their part to make a difference and promote socially responsible getaways.

For those of you that have already had the pleasure of staying atPaws and Paddles Cottage you know the owners really invested lots of time and money and love when preparing their cottage to join our vintage collection of vacation rentals.  From the beginning they made it a point to make Paws and Paddles a pet friendly cottage…even though they did not have a pet of their own at the time.

Somewhere in the back of their minds though was the lingering notion that a chocolate, standard poodle sure would be a great addition to their family.  One day, just by chance, a very interesting adoption ad appeared in their local newspaper.  What harm could there be in a little meet and greet?  Why none, of course!

We are proud to introduce Hershey, a seven year old chocolate, standard poodle and new mascot for Paws and Paddles!

Isn’t he gorgeous?  You probably think Hershey is a lucky young lad.  For anyone that has ever rescued or adopted a pet you soon find out you’re the lucky one.  Somehow, rescued and adopted pets seem to know you’ve done a good thing and they rescue you right back.   Hershey has found his forever home and he’ll soon be visiting Tybee Island and Paws and Paddles.

To keep up with all the fun and laughter of these special, socially responsible cottage owners you can follow their adventures on their Cottage Crazy blog and their Paws and Paddles Facebook page.

Our cottage owners invite you to enjoy a socially responsible vacation at Paws and Paddles.  If you haven’t already, invite a rescued and/or adoptable pet to join your family!  You can  make a difference, too!

Me Thinks Thou Doest Purr-test Too Much

By: “Maddie” Madeline Belle Reed

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July!

I don’t get fireworks.  Does anyone understand why humans seem to love loud noises they make for no good reason, but when we bark at something REALLY important (like that squirrel in the back yard) they tell us to be quiet?  Annoying!!

Believe it or not there are a couple of things on Tybee Island that annoy me.

The first is running out of Beach Bum Biscuits.  Fortunately, this can easily be remedied by a trip to Seaside Sisters.  Disaster averted!!  (Here’s a tip:  You may want to send someone other than your mommy as mine never can hurry at this store.)

Secondly, Fleas and Mosquitoes.  Tybee has them!  Of course, you should be protected by your flea, tick and heartworm medications.  The trick is to be sure your human is protected, too!  You really don’t want them scratching all night and keeping you awake.  My mommy and daddy like to use those clip on things because I like to lick.

Finally…and this one is a little more complicated…THERE ARE CATS ON TYBEE!  I actually like cats OK, but Tybee has a lot of them and they tend to be very friendly!  You will want to try and avoid them, but it won’t be easy.  Start by keeping an eye out for yards with cat flags and statues.  This is often a good clue that a few live there.  When passing a yard like this move to the other side of the street and announce you have decided to take up jogging.  I must warn you this won’t always work as some cats are persistent and your human may decide to even pet them!  If this happens you’re caught.  I have had the nightmarish experience of having three come up to me and actually rub themselves under my chin.  If you have an experience like this what happens next is the most important part to remember.  You must act extremely miserable ( hint:  it won’t be hard).  Now, your human should say how unbelievably good and brave you’ve been and give you a triple Beach Bum Biscuit reward (maybe those cats aren’t so bad after all!).

Until next time, keep those tails up and those noses down!

Wet kisses!
