For the Love of Produce!

Here at Mermaid Cottages, we are all about being green and buying local when we can. Davis Produce on Highway 80 just happens to be the best of both, and we are so excited to share them with our guests!

photo from the Davis Produce Facebook Page

Davis Produce is the “Home of the Killer Tomato” and has the best produce in the area as far as we are concerned (and we aren’t the only ones who think so)! For 17 years, Randy and Sherry Davis have offered fresh, local goodness to their customers. Local farmers bring a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables daily. No trip to the beach is complete without some yummy hot boiled or roasted peanuts and they have a full line of jams, jellies, Vidalia Onion Dressing, and local honey, too! Davis Produce is even a favorite of Paula Deen! All this and more is why we want to share our favorite not-so-secret local shop with each and every one of our guests.

Aren't they beautiful? Mermaid Renee did a wonderful job!

Our own Mermaid Renee has placed empty market baskets in each cottage. These baskets are just waiting for you to fill them with fruit and veggie treasures when you visit Davis Produce! Each of our cottages has a fully equipped kitchen for enjoying cooking at home…and there is nothing better than local produce!

When you take these special Mermaid Cottage market baskets to Davis Produce, you’ll get $5 off of any purchase of $20 or more. You can stock up for your entire stay! Many thanks to Davis Produce for that, and to Mermaid Renee for all her hard work on these fabulous baskets; we just know they will be put to good use!

So, where is this produce haven? Davis Produce is located at 7755 Hwy 80 East on the way to Savannah. It’s just a 12 minute trip from the island! To get there from Tybee, take US 80 toward Savannah.  After the Bull River Bridge, take a left at the second traffic light at Quarterman Drive. Davis Produce is to the left of the gas station.

Davis Produce is just a hop, skip, and a jump up the road!

Now of course, Mermaid Cottages guest or not, we want you to stop by and visit the fabulous people at Davis Produce! They are opened Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop by and browse their offerings, even if you are just coming out to Tybee for the day. You can also find them on Facebook, and they even have a group to join. Either way, it’s worth the trip! Happy shopping!

Bring your Mermaid Cottages market basket and fill it with local, yummy produce!

Mermaids In Our Midst: Lisa Watson & Plan It Green

Mermaid Cottages aren’t just about cozy, inviting interiors you know. We love our out door living areas just as much! It is very important to us that our cottages are as green as possible, and that includes our landscaping. Planting for our region’s conditions is super important, and our go-to garden expert helps us do it all!

Lisa Watson is the founder of Plan It Green Design, and she is the wonderful person we go to for all things green! Lisa is our garden design consultant. She helps us with our planting and horticulture care and her goal is simple…use renewable, local, and eco-conscious resources while designing outdoor living spaces and gardens.

Our Headquarters, Mermaid Manor! Photo thanks to Lisa Watson

Lisa is a gardening guru! She has helped Mermaid Cottages create beautiful outdoor living spaces at our headquarters, Mermaid Manor, as well as our Tucked Inn at Tybee, Dutton Waller cottages. She was also a huge help with our soon-to-be-available cottage on East Harris Street in Savannah. We love her philosophy of re-using, recycling, re-seeding, and rethinking design to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Lisa definitely helps us make more sustainable choices for a better future, and we are so proud to count her as a member of the Mermaid Cottages family!

Mermaids in Our Midst: The Fabulous Elizabeth Demos

Our good friend, Elizabeth Demos!

Everyone at Mermaid Cottages is so proud of our good friend, designer and stylist Elizabeth Demos! She describes herself as a wife, mother, friend, author, entrepreneur, photo stylist, event designer, creative spirit, merchant of marvels, bona fide junker, amateur blogger…and we think that describes her perfectly! We have know for years that she is one talented lady -especially since she was the styling genius behind both Doyle’s on the Beach and Crabby Jo’s Cottages– but now the entire country will know about how awesome she is because, Liz’s work made the cover of Southern Living Magazine!

Liz regularly contributes to amazing publications (check out the list here!), but this is her first national magazine cover and we are super excited for her! You can check out the article here- Southern Living: 7 Ways to Make a New (Old) House or in the brand new June 2011 issue on the newsstands now. Liz Demos never ceases to amaze us with her fabulous work and, of course, this home is no exception! The pictures have us positivly swooning and fanning ourselves…what a beauty!
