16th Annual Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races

16th annual tybee island sea kayak racesThe 16th Annual Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races are coming up soon, so plan to be with us to cheer our kayakers!  On Saturday, September 13th, we’ll all gather at AJ’s Dockside Restaurant to watch all of the race day launches.  This event is a benefit for the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, a non-profit marine science education facility offering hands-on programs for school and scout groups, as well as for the general public. The Tybee Turtle Project, which monitors loggerhead sea turtle nesting and hatching activities on Tybee, is managed by the Marine Science Center.

You can also contribute by purchasing tickets for the race day drawing for the Perception kayak, Werner paddle, & Astral PFD donated by Half-Moon Outfitters. Tickets are 1 for $5, or 3 for $10. Tickets are available at the Marine Science Center, at Papa’s BBQ and Seafood on Whitemarsh Island and at Half-Moon Outfitters on Broughton St. You do not have to be present to win.  All racers should sign up by September 7th …

Senior Friendly Activities on Tybee Island

Look what we found on Visittybee.com!

By Ashley Toro, Mermaid Cottages

Age is no factor when it comes to having fun! Tybee Island, Georgia offers a myriad of senior-friendly activities. Let’s explore them, shall we?

We have a variety of historical monuments and museums that will surely catch your eye, but if it’s romance you’re looking for, we would suggest a sunset walk along the beach. There are also beach swings placed conveniently around the island where you and your sweet pea can sit for a spell and watch the waves crash along the sandy beaches.

If you’re worried your legs may get tired walking along the sand, no problem! Stop by the Tybee Island Ocean Rescue Headquarters and rent a beach accessible wheel chair, made available by the City of Tybee. The best place to wheel onto the beach is at the 18th Street boardwalk where there is an extended walking tarp making it easier to get across the soft sand.

Enjoy a long walk or ride on the beach, but don’t forget the sunscreen and water bottle! We love our seniors, so if you have any questions while at the beach our local lifeguards will be happy to lend a hand.
