Road Trip stop…Crescent Beach, Mattapoisett, MA

These are New England beach cottages in the charming sea side community called Crescent Beach where we stayed just outside the little town of Mattapoisett, MA. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of these cottages that were out of a movie set! The cedar shakes, the touches of occasional color ( but still mostly New England Gray everywhere) the salt worn picket fences….and look at the anchors on the shutters!

Mattapoisett also features a 38-feet tall seahorse named Salty built in the 1940’s at the entrance to the town. Gotta love a community that keeps such roadside memorabilia alive!

Here’s a website to also visit which is very helpful in planning your own road trips throughout this great country of ours. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/

More Autumn Food from the New England Road Trip with Mom…

The New England Road trip with my mom continues….. we hopped in the car and drove North! We started in Bethany Beach, Delaware where Mom has her family beach home and headed up I 95. Exited in the “South Shore” of Massachusetts and began checking things out!

Fairhaven , MA…. picturesque New England coastal town ( but we’ve decided that everything in Massachusetts in the fall is picturesque. ) We ate in a GREAT restaurant called Margaret’s , they only use seasonal and local food… Pumpkin Ravioli……. Butternut Squash & Apple Soup!!! A crisp cool day in New England eating fall food. Here’s the recipe for the soup to enjoy.

Roasted Winter Squash and Apple Soup
Ingredients
Serves 4
1 large winter squash (about 2 1/2 pounds), such as butternut , peeled, seeded, and cut into 2-inch pieces
2 medium onions, peeled and quartered
3 cloves garlic, peeled
2 apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and quartered
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Coarse salt
Chili powder, for seasoning (optional)
4 cups Chicken or Vegetable Stock
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large roasting pan, toss squash, onions, garlic, and apples with oil to coat. Season well with salt and chili powder. Roast, stirring every 10 minutes, until vegetables are fork-tender and lightly browned, about 40 minutes.
Transfer half the vegetables and 2 cups stock to a food processor; puree until smooth. Repeat with remaining vegetables and broth. Return pureed mixture to pot, thinning soup with stock, if necessary. Season with salt and chili powder; bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Serve immediately. Note- when I made this recipe tonight, I added a large handful of crumbled blue cheese to garnish the soup…. just the right touch of creamy goodness to add to the explosion of flavors!

We purchased yarn at Eva’s Yarn Shop, a cornucopia of color and a most helpful Eva! http://www.evasyarnshop.com/ Mom has become a knitting machine working feverishly to start and of course finish all her Christmas projects and gifts!

One great little art gallery- The Blue Dory featuring original work by Laurel Mead. Laurel’s work is sorta like a Yankee Bellamy Murphy- big canvas, bright and cheerful, but using more New England style shells and water scenes then Bellamy’s southern scenes. Laurel used to spend her winters in Key West working as a street performer in Mallory Square celebrating sunsets daily. You never know where your life path will take you… Visit her gallery to enjoy her special art http://www.laurelmeadsgallery.com/

In Fairhaven I found two pictures to share, my sorta namesake fishing boat ( too bad that isn’t my middle name) and a very large Obama piece of public art.

Stop back for more tales from the New England Road Trip!

Beautiful Cottage Details from New England…

I couldn’t resist this beautiful old, old home in Fairhaven, MA…. I literally pulled over, parked the car and hoped out with my little digital camera. The contrast of this gorgeous blue color, the bright white of the incredible trim , the weathered gray of the siding…… I’ve found another new passion besides blogging… taking pictures of these homes I’m finding on my travels! And these pictures were taken with a hand me down old digital camera! I would love to recreate this trim on a Tybee cottage…. hmmmmmm

Autumn Road Trip…

I’m on still on my road trip traveling with my mom, driving the coast from Delaware to New England. We were listening to Morning Edition on NPR and heard a GREAT recipe from Nigella Lawson, the terrific London Celebrity Chef. We picked up a Butternut Squash at a local farm stand here in Delaware and made this dish last night. The dish said Autumn!!!!! You can see more of Nigella’s interview on http://www.npr.org/ Here’s the recipe from NPR’s website to share- I made this last night and it was just delicious! The pictures are from the farm stand here in Delaware…… I’m planning to make Butternut Squash and Apple Soup with the remaining Squash so stop back soon for that recipe!
Butternut Squash With Pecans And Blue Cheese

Ingredients
4-1/2 lbs butternut squash
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 cup pecans – chopped either raw or roasted
1 cups crumbled Roquefort or other blue cheese
Instructions:
Heat the oven to 425°F.
Halve the squash, leaving the skin on, and scoop out the seeds, then cut into 1-inch cubes; you don’t need to be precise, just keep the pieces uniformly small.
Put into a roasting pan with the oil and sprinkle the thyme of their leaves over the butternut squash. Roast in the oven for about 30-45 minutes or until tender.
Once out of the oven, remove the squash to a bowl and scatter over the pecans and crumble over the cheese, tossing everything together gently.

Serves 6-8
