Live Like a Local: Fun in the Sun at the 2012 SCAD Sand Art Festival!

Every year, Tybee Island’s beautiful North Beach is host to so amazing things. The sand of North Beach is transformed into a surreal landscape you have to see to believe! From wild sea creatures to elaborate castles, anything and everything that can be made out of sand could be there! This year, the day is May 4, 2012, so make plans to be on Tybee Island! Come out to North Beach and enjoy the imagination and creative skills of SCAD students in the Savannah College of Art and Design’s 2012 Sand Art Festival!

It’s always a good time, just check out the pictures from past festivals. The even better news? It’s free and open to the public! Come join in the sand sculpting, or just sit back and enjoy the spectacle. There will be something for everyone! The fun starts at 10 a.m. and will run through 2 p.m. Stroll the beach and enjoy all the entries in each category: sand castles, sand sculptures, sand relief, Gary’s Reef Best Underwater Creature, and wind sculptures.  Judging will take place and then awards will be announced about 4 p.m.

Just some of the amazing sculptures from past years! Check out the gallery on the festival website to see more!

For those wanting to join in the sculpting fun, a few items you may want to bring along are: shovels, buckets, carving tools, and anything else you think you may need to get your sculpt on. And, of course, don’t forget your drinking water and a picnic lunch!  Check out the Directions and Parking page for the festival for all your information on getting to the festival, too!

Make a day of it and get some sand in your toes! Join us on Tybee’s North Beach for the 2012 SCAD Sand Art Festival. It’s going to be a blast!

Mermaid Sighting: Beautiful Handmade Glass Mermaids

If you know anything about Mermaid Cottages, you know we love art! And of course, if that art incorporates mermaids, well that’s even better. Just look at these beautiful glass mermaids by artist Deb DiMarco! These beautiful pieces, both the Green Mermaid and the Dichoric Mermaids, are offerings from the National Liberty Museum Store in Philadelphia, PA. Here’s what their site has to say about the artist and her gorgeous work:

“I love the balance of glass and that I can use it like very hot paint.” ~Deb DiMarco Studio del Vetro Salem, NJ. Working as an independent glass artist since 2006 Ms. DiMarco made the switch from 2-D to 3-D design. After retiring from a 20 year career in graphic arts, she enrolled in the Glass Program of Salem Community College in Carneys Point, NJ studying concept and technique from 2003 through 2006. Although Deb is primarily a flame worker, she enjoys exploring many of the possible avenues of working with glass and has used sand casting, mold-making, slumping, fusing and pate de verre to express her ideas. Ms. DiMarco stays actively involved in the glass art community, by teaching, volunteering at Wheaton Arts and giving live flame working demonstrations.”

We adore these beautiful pieces; so much so, we had to share them with you! Have you spotted a mermaid recently? Well, we’d love to hear about it! Please send your sightings and stories to us at diane@mermaidcottages.com. We’d love to feature your sighting right here on our blog!
