Some more 4th of July!

I really love the 4th of July. I think it’s one of my favorite holidays. My sister and brother in law love Thanksgiving , but I love the 4th. Seeing red, white and blue everywhere, most people have the day off, people are in such a cheerful mood…. I remember after 9/11 and how you’d see our flags flying everywhere , as sad as that time was, to see our flag everywhere just reminded us we are the greatest country in the world and will survive.
A little flag tip from Steve Olney ( who created the upstairs of Mermaid Manor) – when you have an American flag that is torn or tattered- you can drop it off at any American Legion and they hold a flag burning ceremony. You NEVER throw the flag away!

Look at these two great pictures from Fifi Flowers blog http://fififlowersdecor.blogspot.com/
aren’t these great??
The fireworks on the beach last night were truly spectacular. We walked down to the 8th street beach ( last year we were almost at the pier and it was way too close and too loud). Perfect spot! The wind was blowing from the south and was actually almost chilly ( well not really but it sure was blowing good). We were there around 9AM and if you looked north you could see the fireworks from Hilton Head AND Beaufort AND Fripp Island!! Then our fireworks started around 9:20PM and lasted a good 30 minutes…. Thank you to the city for a job well done!!

Happy 4th of July 2008!

Happy 4th of July! Thousands of you have descended on the island to celebrate our country’s birthday. The beach is packed, the weather is gorgeous- hot and sunny, but not too humid- perfect for everyone to enjoy and celebrate! This afternoon was a BBQ cookout at Sue and Gary’s home, fresh boiled shrimp from JB the shrimper, Pulled Pork that Gary had cooked for 15 hours in the outside smoker ( covered in his secret rub ), sides included his aunt’s secret receipe for cole slaw and mother’s equally secret and wonderful receipe for potato salad and other yummy food. Desert was Marsh Mud- Sue’s incredible brownie/ fudge chocolately desert….. Fireworks tonight on the beach at dusk. We’re so lucky to be Americans, no where else in this world is such freedom and opportunity to be and accomplish anything you truly want….. God bless America!

White girl dancing….

One of my best friends in the whole world is here for her annual 4th of July visit- Penny Paxton from Pittsburgh PA – we met in college and have remained dear friends all these 30 something years. ( 30 years??????? ) . Penny is in great shape thanks to eating right and working out 4-5 times a week. She arrived and said- let’s go to Zumba class tonight!
Now, I’ve heard all about Zumba and been wanting/ meaning to go- Laura Celaya who owns the Crabby Pirate Cottage and Marsh Mermaid House is a fitness teacher at the Y and teaches Zumba at the Habersham YMCA. But 8AM to go off island seems like a bit too much, but tonight’s Zumba class was at our own little Tybee YMCA. Our Y is like everything else on Tybee, just a little quirky. The attendees were a wide mixture of visitors and locals and our instructor was about 18 years old- cheerleader perfect and you know she was just picturing herself up on stage with Hannah Montana as her back ground dancer…. very nice young lady and so happy to be there and teaching us the wild hot latin dances. The contrast of her blonde perkiness and the latin sound just added to the fun. And so we start….. salsa music playing loudly and all of us are trying to keep up. Speaking only for myself, I’m a pretty coordinated person but trying to do all these latin and hip hop dance moves while following along was definetly a work out. The mental pressure to not fall and to not seem like the middle aged white woman that I am was the hardest part! Hey- if Madonna can dance like this- why can’t we! She’s 50 just like we are! Our instructor was so relieved when each dance was over and none of us had fallen down or tripped over our own two feet that she literally would applaud after each dance with a sigh of relief!
Here’s how zumba is supposed to be done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZVIv5Wmlts&feature=related One of my summer goals is to at least be able to get some of those salsa moves down!
For the YMCA schedule go to www.ymcaofcoastalga.org for the zuma and all the other classes while here visiting the island.

Walking Mermaids

I love to meet people when I walk the dogs. I met two wonderful little girls visiting their grandparents who live down the street. Destiny and Angel were about 9 years old and love to walk and talk. They decided we would be the walking mermaids since they were wearing their water shoes to “cover up their fins ” because they were mermaids! They too loved the fiddler crabs who live along Venetian Drive and we also saw a number of little bunnies as well. That’s the amazing part about our island, we have literally thousands of people here this week ( the busiest week of the year), but back along our waking and bikes paths, we see bunnies, fiddler crabs and walking mermaids!
PS- and speaking of walking mermaids- there is a Mermaid Parade held every year on Coney Island!!! Visit the website http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml to see more of this fun!
