PULIS? Are You Pulling My Leg?

I saw two of these awesome, but curious looking dogs recently in Los Angeles.  I couldn’t help but laugh to myself about how cool they must be and I’d bet they’d keep my floors spic and span!

This breed is know as Puli, a type of Mop Dog.  It’s a Hungarian, medium small breed used for herding and protection.  Not to be confused with the much larger Komondors which are always white, the pulis are smaller and most often black.  Their coat naturally grows in cord like dreadlocks.

If you don’t own an active livestock farm for the Pulis to herd and protect just know they will soon regard your family as their herd and will keep you and your brood in line without hesitation.

This active dog is not well suited to in-home living and definitely not for confined spaces, but if you’re looking for a fantastic security dog that will get lots of exercise and love you, to boot, get a mop!

COTTAGE CHEESE:How You Gonna Keep Em Down On The Farm?

How you gonna keep em down on the farm, after they’ve seen the Tybee Community Garden?

Of the many wonderful things I’ve experienced on Tybee Island, I can’t get enough of this incredible community project known as the Tybee Community Garden!  It’s located between the YMCA and the Old School and it’s already producing harvests year round!

Individual plots are 4 x 8 ft spaces that rent for $50  and there is a communal space, as well. The garden is remarkable to me in that it is self sustaining.  Particpants and partners gather rain water and condensation from around the island to water the plants.  No city resources are used!  There’s even a compost area that will soon provide the necessary nutrients to amend the soil for future crops!

Currently, the garden is for individul consumption and swapping, but eventually it will mature into a local market with fresh vegetables for sale.  The garden can always use more garden hoses, rain barrels, fruit trees and wood for staking tomatoes and new members are also welcome so long as vacant plots are available.

Got any heirloom varieties you’d like to share with the garden?  Contact Karen Kelly at 912 786 9719 or at karenontybee@aol.com.

It’s about honoring your green thumb!  It’s about developing a community resource!  It’s about casting your seeds and sowing them with kindness to reap many delicious rewards to come!  And, it all goes great with COTTAGE CHEESE!

HAIRY PUPPER!

How ’bout a nice, big, sloppy, wet kiss!

Friday, January 21 through Sunday, January 23, Coastal Pet Rescue will have a booth at the Lowcountry Living Home and Garden Show at the Savannah Trade Center.

Come to Dogwarts to meet Snifferin, Kittendor and Ruffentuf and Ravenpaw and other residents of area foster homes and hopefully you’ll make a magical match!  If you’re not quite ready to adopt, donate 50 cents for a kiss from a puppy and all proceeds will go towards veterinary care for rescued pets!

Admission to attend the Home and Garden show is $8 and you can even get a $1 off coupon at http://www.showtechnology.com/coupon_reg.html.

Mermaids in Our Midst: Star Cottage

We love hearing from you, our Mermaid friends! Karen stayed with us this past summer in Star Cottage, over on Jones Avenue, and this is what she had to share!

“I chose this cottage from pictures based on the kitchen because my son loves to cook—lucky me. We found the cottage well-equipped and spacious enough for all 7 of us. We loved the decor, so cheery and bright. The marine artifacts were fascinating for the granddaughters. Proximity to the beach was great so long as you are organized and have a cart. Beach was clean and safe with life guards on duty. Would love to come back to this cottage for a girlfriend weekend. Definitely a good value.”     By Karen from Roswell, Georgia for a 7/1/2010 stay.

Thank you for visiting Tybee and staying with us Karen! We are always happy to hear about fantastic family vacations in our cottages. Please do come back soon!
