Live Like a Local: Fun at The Crab Shack!

We all had a blast this weekend at Tybee’s Isiah Heritage Parade! The entire island was decked out in green, and the Luck o’ the Irish was in the air. You can’t help but smile at a parade…especially when you see something like this. This was definitely one of my favorites!

You gotta love the creativity here!

Well, the fun is far from over around here! The Crab Shack is welcoming back friends from Junkanoo World in the Bahamas! Barabbas and the Tribe will be at the Shack daily from 6 to 8 p.m. performances through March 17th. You can also see them in Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. If you haven’t experienced this amazing expression of Bahamian culture, you absolutely need to catch the show! It’s an explosion of costumes, dance, and drums you have to see to believe.

This is a performance Tybee looks forward to every year and its a definite must to wrap up your St. Patty’s Day in style! The show starts around 7 p.m. so make plans to be there. We hope to see you for all the fun this weekend…and don’t forget to wear your green!!

Along with the wonderful words about our beautiful island, the authors of the article recommended Mermaid Cottages as the place to stay when visiting. Not to be forgotten, Tybee was also listed as one of the Top 5 “Hidden Beach Destinations” on Yahoo! How exciting is that?! Here’s a little of what they had to say…

Located just a few short minutes east of Savannah, GA, Tybee Island may not be such a secret to those in the southeast. Tybee Island offers some beautiful beaches and resort hotels and gives you the feeling of those old 50’s and 60’s beach towns. While there, you can catch one of Savannah’s famous ghost tours or catch the casino gambling boat that takes you out and let you spend the kid’s college tuition.”

Make sure you read the entire article to learn more about all five of the Top Hidden Beaches over at Yahoo! I agree…I had no idea we were such a secret. Well, if we were, the secret is definitely out now! These accolades are huge honors to have, but of course, they come as no surprise to those of us who live here.

Irish Heritage Celebration:MANX

Here, Kitty-Kitty…

The MANX or tail-less cat may seem like a mystery, but it’s really just another type of cat…just one without a tail.  Due to a naturally occurring mutation of the spine some Manx are born with short, stubby tails  while some have no tail at all.

One legend has it that a cat was playing near the door of the ark and Noah caught its tail in the door as it shut.  Another legend refers to Manx as cabbits as if they’re a cross between a cat and  a rabbit.  That would explain their extra long back legs and stubby tails!

These are usually earth heavy cats, so think of them as more like a dog.  They’re very affectionate and dedicated to their human family.  While they don’t really like to be picked up they will hop in your lap and cuddle and follow you around just to be near you.

Take a look at Manx in action in this great You Tube video by Janson Media:

Irish Heritage:IRISH WOLFHOUND

What’s the tallest dog breed?

The Irish Wolfhound!

This largest and tallest galloping hound combines power and swiftness with keen eyesight.  Easy-going and quiet, these dogs create a very strong bond with their human families.  Though not normally aggressive around other domestic dogs, they are natural hunters and may course another dog.   This is not a fighting or territorial behavior.

They are very affectionate to children and seem to know they need to be gentle, despite their great size.  They also seem to be able to sense ill will or danger towards their human family which makes them excellent guardians, but not necessarily good guard dogs.

Tale a look at this wonderful Animal Discovery Channel video and you’ll see how magnificent these dogs really are!

We’re celebrating Irish Heritage this week, but we celebrate our pet friends every day!  Be sure to share your photos of your pets enjoying Tybee Island and Mermaid Cottages!
