BOOMER And The Journey To Service

BOOMER, our youngest Golden Retriever puppy in training to be a Guide Dog, dropped by for a visit, recently.

He just turned one last month, so our young lad is growing up.  He’ll soon be returning to Guide Dog School for more training.

Boomer paid us a visit at Seaside Sisters and he gave their new expansion several tale wags!  He also posed for pictures with everyone and even did a little modeling for our Mermaid Cottages section in the shop.

He has a very passionate soul and is super vigilant, so he will be the perfect service companion to a person with disabilities some day.

We’re  just glad we get to be his biggest cheerleaders and we’re honored to take this journey with him.  We love having Boomer in our neighborhood for visits!

Live Like a Local: Turtle Season is Right Around the Corner!

Thanks to the Tybee Sea Turtle Project Facebook pageThis year has just flown by so far! I can’t believe we are a mere two days away from April already. May will definitely be here before you know it…how crazy is that? May not only means a busier season for us, it means Sea Turtle season, too!

Mermaid Cottages loves our sea turtles! We have several Mermaids and Mermen that are part of the 6 a.m. Turtle Patrol from May 1st through September 1st, where we walk the beaches of Tybee looking for signs of newly laid nests. Last season, I found two nests during my patrol, so of course I’m eagerly awaiting the 2011 season!

Lights Out for the Sea Turtles is also a very important part of the season. We must all do our parts to make sure baby sea turtles have the best conditions possible when they hatch so they can make it safely to the waiting waves. We’ve made sure our two beach front cottages- Doyle’s on the Beach and Crabby Jo’s– have sea turtle friendly lighting and that our guests know what to do to make their stay turtle friendly as well!

Picture thanks to Layla Palmer of The Lettered CottageWe even have our very own brand of coffee, created to support the Sea Turtle Project in Georgia. Mermaid Morning Bliss is available in each cottage to enjoy during your stay and is also for sale at our favorite place to shop, Seaside Sisters here on Tybee! All profits go towards these projects. We are also avid supporters through the Tybee Island Marine Science Center and the annual Tybee Turtle Trot 5K race held each spring to kick off Sea Turtle Season!

As you can probably tell, sea turtles are near and dear to our hearts around here. We love our sea creatures, oceans, and guests and we couldn’t be more proud that we try our very best to take care of all three! Make sure you keep up with all the happenings on the Tybee Sea Turtle Project Facebook Page and right here on our blog. We can’t wait to kick off Sea Turtle season, so stay tuned…May is closer than you think!
