Live Like a Local: Art and Wine Fun!

April has gotten off to a running start here on Tybee! There’s so much going on, your head will spin. The fun isn’t waiting for the weekend either! It starts tonight, in fact!

One of our favorite island artists, Rebecca Rice, is teaching a class tonight at the Tybee Arts Center. Art materials, snacks, and beverages will be provided, so all you need is a creative spirit! The class is $40 per person, with $5 being donated to the Historic Tybee Post Theater, and participants will create an original 9×12 inch painting to take home and enjoy. The Tybee Arts Center is at 7 Cedarwood Avenue. If you would like more information, please call 912-786-5920 or go to the Tybee Arts Association website!

The good times continue through the weekend with the 3rd Annual Tybee Wine Festival! The festival will be April 15th and 17th, 3 to 7 p.m., on the Tybee Lighthouse grounds. This year, there will be a Grand Tasting event as well as an Evening of Oysters and Wine at Marlin Monroe’s at Beachcolony! The festival will wrap up April 17th with the special Champagne at the Chapel, held at the newly opened Tybee Wedding Chapel!

Don’t miss a minute of the fabulous festivities…proceeds benefit the effort to restore the Historic Tybee Post Theater. What better reason is there to enjoy great wine with good friends? Tickets for these events are available right now, but they are limited, so get yours today! You can purchase your tickets and get more information one each event over on the Tybee Wine Festival website. We can’t wait, hope to see you there!

Mermaid Sighting: Everyday Magic

Look at this wonderful surprise our friend Michael discovered the other day while out and about on Tybee! I got the biggest smile on my face seeing this. Michael spotted her up in the trees along Van Horne while on the way to the Dog Park!  “I’ve been trekking this route on foot, bike, and auto for six years, and only now spotted her!” he said. Isn’t that great? Just a little bit of everyday magic to catch your eye that makes you slow down a minute and smile! Thanks so much for sharing Michael!!

Have you spotted a mermaid? It seems they are everywhere when you know to keep an eye out for them! We’d love to see your sightings, so please send your pictures and stories to diane@mermaidcottages.com and we’ll share the with our readers right here on our blog. We can’t wait to hear from you!

What’s The Story, Morning Glory?

Just like the opening line from a song in Bye, Bye Birdie , “What’s the story, morning glory” it pays tribute to those early risers that shine and open up most often at the start of the day.  The Victorian “Language of Flowers” states that the Morning Glory flower represents “love in vain”.  Imagine, the type of flowers you give to someone has unspoken meaning, but between lovers it says alot!

Morning Glory is the common name for over 1000 different species of flowering plants and they may belong to many genera.  Most morning glories curl up and close during the warmer parts of the day, but on cloudy days they sometimes stay open all the way until night.

Since our little island hamlet is usually frost free, these beautiful flowers can often be regarded as perennials.  Whatever their species or genera, perennials or annuals we just think these Morning Glory flowers are truly glorious morning, noon and night!

Serving With Honor: TONY

One of the puppies we sponsored for Guide Dog training, Tony, is about to be paired with his new owner.  Tony has spent the first years of his life learning and training to be of service to someone in need.

Tony excelled during his first 18 months of being socialized by his “walker” where he learned proper etiquette in public.  Next, he moved up through the ranks of training and apprenticing and he’s now ready to change someone’s life forever.

Of course, this comes as no surprise to us.  You see, Tony is a namesake.  He is named to honor  and in memory of Tony Patrea, JR.  Tony was a brilliant young man from Tybee who was well known throughout the island for his citizenship, courteousness and helpfulness.  He volunteered for many Mermaid Cottages community service projects and he also loved animals dearly.

Tony Patrea, Jr made the most of his life while he was here and we know Tony, the Guide Dog, will make his mark on someone’s life just like his namesake.

We remember Tony Patrea, Jr and we honor his legacy through our Tony’s life of service!
