What A Day For A Daydream

by Cottage Cheese

WHEW!

The summer heat has been visiting and then a tropical storm to beat the band rolled through during the night!

It’s going to be an absolutely beautiful day today on Tybee Island and a day to give thanks.

We have teachers and educators enjoying a much deserved break before heading back to the classroom to begin a new school year full of promise for students eager to learn and plan their futures.

We have members of our military on the island,  including those currently serving and those that are veterans of past service.

We have newlyweds and lovebirds enjoying quiet getaways and romantic adventures.

We have new families and those with two and three generations vacationing together.

We have our year round residents that work very hard and take pride in preserving and sharing the wonderful beach ecology of our barrier island.

And, best of all, we have Mermaids and Mermen who do their best to keep it all running and who create the magic behind the scenes that make our paradise even more special.

What a day for a daydream!  Remember to do something special for someone you meet today.

For inspiration, tour our wonderful Brooks Cottage!

Mermaids in Our Midst: Poetry!

It’s not very often we receive poetry in our email…and it is even less often that we receive poetry about Mermaid Cottages! Jamie Harris, one of our fabulous fans from Chattanooga, Tennessee, sent us this fabulous poem she wrote herself. We loved it so much, of course we had to share it here with all of you!

Here I sit in my office dreary…

Dreaming of Tybee, so light and cheerie

The sounds of the Island, the crash of the waves

Glad of the vacation, my company gave…

This Vacation, will not put me in debt

I rented from mermaids! The best I bet!

So swift and prompt, were their replies

I count down the calendar as days go by!

For soon in the car, all our stuff will be packed

Beach Bum Biscuits, our doggies will snack.

Over the hills, and through small towns

Our GPS system, will keep us bound.

The Sun will rise, on the eastern coast

Tybee Island! Will a new day boast!

Bring to us, laughter and fun!

Mermaid Cottages, will be your number one!

You can have your resorts, your casino’s, your cruise

For me it’s Tybee, you’ve got nothing to lose!

Remember your camera, and your sunscreen too…

Look out Mermaids, were coming for you!!!

Jamie's nephew, Thomas, and Jamie enjoying a day on Tybee Island!

Isn’t that wonderful?! Jamie, thank you so much for sharing your talent with us, and for being such a big fan! We can’t wait to see you on Tybee soon!

Sand Dollars on Tybee…Take the Test!

A whole, pristine specimen is one of the ultimate treasures you can pluck from the sand. Even seasoned beachcombers don’t come across them too often. What could it be? Why, sand dollars of course! Sand dollars are always exciting to find in the tide, but there are certain things you should know about these unique treasures that will make beachcombing better for you and the sand dollars!

Most people don’t realize it, but sand dollars are live marine animals. As such, collecting a live sand dollar just isn’t OK. Taking home live marine animals threatens species. It just inhumane, it’s illegal in a lot of states, so it is a good idea to educate yourself and learn the difference between a live sand dollar and their shells, called “tests.”

A live sand dollar is usually found in the sand, under the waves, but they can occasionally wash ashore. Live sand dollars will be dark in color and feel soft to the touch, sort of like felt. On the other hand, a sand dollar test (the remains of left behind after a sand dollar dies) is a skeletal, hard shell that is light or white in color. If you find a sand dollar, Take the Test! You can collect the tests and take them home as Tybee Island souvenirs. But if the specimen you find is soft and dark please remember…it is a living marine animal. Replace it in the tide, or just admire it and keep on combing. Think about it- how would you feel if someone picked you up and stuffed you in a dark pocket?

If you visit Tybee Island, or any beach for that matter, and plan to do a little beach combing, please help us conserve our local sand dollar populations. For more information on Tybee Island, our ecosystems, and our wild life, please visit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center or check them out online! Helping sand dollars is simple really…if you find a sand dollar, just Take the Test!

Mermaid Sighting: Tybee Island Mermaids!

Mermaids are everywhere this summer! This week’s sighting, like last week, is a multiple! Deanna, a local mermaid-lover right here in Savannah, was spending the day on Tybee Island recently and snapped these pictures of three lovely mermaids. These fabulous maidens all make their home in Tybee’s own Atlantic Beacon Gallery, right on Butler Avenue. How exciting…getting a mermaid sighting from our own back yard!

Aren't they fabulous? So sassy!

Mermaids aren’t the only thing you can find in the Atlantic Beacon Gallery, you know. The gallery is chock-full of wonderful local and regional art, so make sure to visit next time you are on the island. It is definitely a must-see! You can even follow them on their Official Facebook page, so make sure to check them out there too! Thank you so much for sending in your sightings Deanna, we love them all!

Have you seen a mermaid? They seem to be just about everywhere! If you have a sighting, please share it with us. We’d love to see it and share it with our readers! Please send your sightings to diane@mermaidcottages.com. We can’t wait to hear from you soon!
