Mermaid Sightings of Deb DiMarco's Black Mermaids
Black Mermaids, Studio del Vetro, Deb DiMarco-Artist

Studio del Vetro and artist Deb DiMarco was featured in our May Mermaid Sightings.  We were just so in love with Deb’s work we had to share it with you.  Well, Deb heard about our admiration and wrote us this lovely note.

“I wanted to write to thank you for featuring my mermaids on your website. If it hadn’t been for Cookie Washington, curator of the “Mermaids and Merwomen in Black Folklore” exhibition at City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Historic Charleston, SC on view August 28 through October 28, 2012 I would never have been aware that you had found my work. Cookie tracked me down from your blog posting to …

A Well Dressed Bed in a Mermaid’s Cottage

A well dressed bed at Mermaid Cottages

The Beds at Mermaid Cottages are always well dressed. Diane and I are complimentary opposites.  She prefers more and I prefer less.  I would do 2 bed pillows per person and 3 large back pillows.  Diane does a total of 9 pillows on her beds.  This bedroom at Dutton Waller cottage is a great example of Diane’s school of thought.  She does a great job of finding bed linens that evoke cottage charm.  The coverlet at the end of the bed is new but looks like the 1930’s.  Diane is the smartest shopper I know.  She combs through Home Goods and TJ Maxx and the like for bargains.  Her timing is surgically accurate. she knows when the merchandise is to be updated weekly.  Even in my own design work I always suggest using  retail outlet stores in conjunction with custom-made things. Tuesday Morning being a favorite of mine for expensive linens at very off prices. I favor 1000 thread count sheets. They are a great source for them but you have to watch for their ads and be persistent.

Vintage Tybee Island finds, you’ll never guess where!

We have what’s known as the Tybee Island “mall” .  You put by the side of the road anything you no longer need and someone comes along and picks up exactly what they need.  I’ve been a “buyer” and a “seller” of the Tybee Mall!  Here are two chairs that someone did not want- I’m sure because of the condition of the rattan and bamboo.  However I am a rusty, crusty, the more chipped the better fan and these chairs were right up my alley.   I had some fabric that I purchased from Ballard Backroom in Atlanta   when it was on super sale- I believe under $8 a yard. I had our local cushion maker make some cushions.  So the total cost per chair was maybe around $60.  The style and the look is just perfect!  I added two planters that Ipurchased from the Garden Party fundraiser with Historic Savannah Foundation.  These chairs and planters are the perfect final touch to Dutton Waller Cottage!

Isn’t this planter beautiful? Even better- buying it was for a great cause!
