Viva Las Vegas- Elvis was right!

I finally get Las Vegas. During my hotel career I had the opportunity to come to this city 5 or 6 times. Always staying at the JW Marriott or the MGM Grand on business, always eating at glorious restaurants, even saw Las Vegas at night by helicopter. But not until I came with my sister and mom did I truly understand why people come back over and over again. The nickel slot machines and a hotel room overlooking one of the true man made miracles was the start. Here’s a brief recap from Vegas’s newest fan!
  • The Drive from LA to Vegas- you go thru the desert- Death Valley and right in the middle of nowhere is Baker, CA and The Mad Greek Drive In and truck stop! The Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives needs to come here. It was so good we stopped both going and on the way back! Gyros, Greek Salad, homemade strawberry milk shakes all at a very reasonable price! And beyond tacky with their greek decor!
  •

  • You drive for a few hours through the desert and then suddenly, out of nowhere — VEGAS!!!!! The hotels appears in the distance like a mirage. My sister started talking about the slot machines and playing the penny slots, the nickel slots and the quarter slots. I just didn’t understand. I thought the slot machines were boring, tedious and just plain silly. But, I was wrong…..
  •

  • We drove up and down the Vegas strip before checking into the Bellagio hotel. A mass of humanity everywhere you looked. No one would ever believe it was late September. Thousands and thousands of people walking and walking. Lights, music, and bigger and more dramatic buildings no matter where we looked.
  •

  • Then – Bellagio http://www.bellagio.com/ A most magnificent hotel. In front of the hotel is an incredible man made lake. Every 30 minutes during the day and 15 minutes in the evening, the lake comes alive and “dancing” water fountains set to music put on a display you can’t believe. And the musical selections are everything from Elvis singing Viva Las Vegas to Liza singing Cabaret. The lobby features a $10 Million Dollar glass ceiling sculpture of flowers by Dale Chihuly http://www.chihuly.com/ Here is a small picture of this truly unique work of art.
  • Upon check in we were whisked up to the 19th floor. We had a room that looked right out on the lake and fountains and directly across the street from our hotel was Paris Las Vegas. Another great hotel. There is an almost life size version (at least it seems that way) of the Eiffel Tower. Gorgeous!!
  • The most amazing thing about casino hotels – you have to pass through the casino to get everywhere – to your room, to the pool, to the shows. And there are no clocks in casinos. The lighting is set to be the same no matter whether it’s 12 noon or 12 midnight.
  • I could go on and on about Vegas but let me just say – WE LOVE DONNY AND MARIE!! Saturday evening we went to the Flamingo hotel and saw Donny and Marie Osmond in concert. We had seats directly in front – 2nd table from the stage. Donny and Marie came on stage and it was nonstop for 90 minutes. They both looked great and sounded fantastic. But the best part – toward the end of the show, after my sister and I had danced, and sang and screamed along with the other 40 something and 50 somethings girls, Donny danced right out onto our table and….. TOUCHED US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He shook our hands and danced back onto the stage. WOW! We didn’t want to wash our hands ever again. Great entertainers. The best concert I’ve seen in years. And the even better part is Donny is 51 and Marie is almost 50. Even if they’ve had a “little work done” it truly didn’t matter. No doctor could give them that spirit and energy and desire to entertain and please. Americans always love a come back story and these two are the come back story of the year. http://www.donnyandmarie.com/ is their website with snippets of their show. This picture of them is actually on the side of the Flamingo hotel and is easily 20 stories tall. Such fun seeing them smiling down at us!
  • Lunch was at Bobby Flay’s restaurant, Mesa Grill. I love Bobby Flay from the Food Network, but I honestly didn’t expect his restaurant to be as good as it truly was. EXCELLENT food, over the top service and genuine warmth from the entire team. Highly recommend you visit one of his three restaurants. http://www.bobbyflay.com/
  • Sunday was loads of fun. My mom and sister kept stopping at the slots and “throwing away” $10, or $20. We went to Caesars Palace Forum shops http://www.swankyvegas.com/ and watched people and shopped. Bought new eye makeup from the MAC shop from a girl with purple hair and eye makeup, but she was used to middle aged women shopping in her store and gave us great advice and sold us the exact right items. Went to the Kate Spade store http://www.katespade.com/ and purchased a new purchase that is beautiful and very grown up …. We saw another show – Cirque de Soleil’s Mystere. http://www.cirquedesoleil.com/ never quite understood how everything fit together, but that’s the magic of Cirque.
  • We were heading back to our room and decided to play the slot machines again. I humored them and we sat down at the 5 cent slots. Well — my sister pushed the button and ding, ding, ding, ding, ding…… the machine started going crazy. The numbers started going up and up. The machine was making lots of noise. We started laughing – but I was also thinking – “Did we win it big? When were the #s going to stop?” Finally – it stopped at 919 credits. Of course, remember – it was the nickel slot machine but it didn’t matter – WE WON! We cashed out and my sister had won $52.00. Not a huge amount of money, but certainly something. Mom didn’t win much and we decided we were done. We headed back toward the room but decided to spend $2. That way, we would walk away with $50 (because we knew we were going to lose). We found a quarter slot machine. My mom put in her dollar and my sister put in hers. My mom immediately lost. 4 pulls of the machine, 4 losses. My sister pushed the button and….. ding, ding, ding (again) —– my sister won $30! She spent 75 cents and won $30 on 1 pull of the machine!! So, we walked away with $80 after spending about $10. But more than that – we had such great fun and I finally do get it. The money spent on the slots was “entertainment”. No different than spending the same amount of money on a show. And the fun of it is – the next pull or the next bet could be the one where we might win a million dollars. Of course – my warning – always gamble responsibly.
  • We went to bed that night after having a terrific time in Vegas still talking about us “winning big”
  • And the next morning, off we went – back toward LA, back through the desert, back past The Mad Greek and on to Seal Beach, CA for the next part of our West Coast Birthday trip.

Los Angeles is a different world but I love it!

What a fun couple of days in this gorgeous part of the world. Imagine a place without 99% humidity! A place where there aren’t any no seen em’s or mosquitoes. Blue Sky, sunshine, beautifully coiffed people! And great wine at every venue! Here’s a recap of some of my LA experiences so far.
  • Gas Stations. Look at this sign. They sell all those gases that T. Boone is pushing on TV. Including the cooking oil from McDonald’s that you can use to run your car. I had to take a picture of this.
  •

  • Cupcake Heaven! I thought Sprinkles was great, but Susie Cakes DOES take the cake! This is an actual picture of Susie herself who happened to be in her shop training her team. She calls her shop “An All- American Home-Style Bake Shop” and she is right. Her signature cupcakes are “frosting filled” and if you’re a cupcake eater like me, the frosting is always the best part. She also makes “whoopy pies” which are to die for chocolate thick rich cookies with butter cream frosting in between. 1 will fill 3 people. Give yourself the treat of visiting her website until you can make the pilgrimage there in person. http://www.susiecakesla.com/
  •

  • Lilly- my friend Cindy’s dog, is sporting her Susie Cakes cupcake dog collar. After all, she does live in LA! Lilly is the beloved dog of Cindy , my dear friend who drove me all over LA to show me every possible corner she could in 2 days.
  •

  • My haircut and color. I did take a picture of the “before,” but decided the “after “was so much better. These are the two owners of Juan Juan who are actually the stylist and colorist to the stars. They also take normal folks like me and turn our flat brown hair into full blondish stylish wonder! Ellie and Sean, ( brother and sister) are pictured here, as nice as they are handsome and beautiful. Ellie is spending the next three days working with the Emmy Awards coloring any and all the stars who come by the Emmy Mansion for a little work before the shows Sunday night. http://www.juanjuan.com/ and their services are worth every single hard earned penny!!!
  •

  • Drinks with my former boss, Stephen and Cindy at Casa Del Mar, Hotel by the Sea in Santa Monica. This old restored hotel is owned by the same people who own Shutters in Santa Monica and is right next door. Both are on the beach overlooking the pacific and the place for sunset and wine. Couldn’t have been more fun to visit, get caught up , sip a perfectly aged glass of California Chardonnay and enjoy a plate of artisan cheese , bread and fig jam- the taste truly worked believe it or not! We all admired these 2 couple who walked in and sat a few table from us, the one lady because she has such GREAT style and this amazing hair cut with her natural gray. Especially in LA you just don’t always see women embracing their true self! She looked so great, we went over to her on the way out, told her so, and then ended up taking our picture together. She was celebrating her birthday in great style. Turns out she’s been written about in an article in the LA Times for having her hair natural. The spontaneity of travel at it’s best! Visit http://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/ to see more of this gorgeous hotel.
  • Stay tuned for more tales from the coast…

Travel and Leisure Magazene discovers us!

Despite the fact that I’m clear out West, Tybee continues to just move along! Just discovered that the October issue of Travel and Leisure Magazine http://www.travelandandleisure.com/ is featuring Savannah and Tybee Island in a special section called “Southern Exposure”. Here’s a portion of what they said:

Coastal Jewel

“Discover the romance of Coastal Savannah, Georgia…… Once you’ve discovered Savannah’s Marvels, consider a beach getaway at Tybee Island. With delightful temperatures long into the fall, there’s still time to enjoy the resort’s laid back vibe, beaches, forts, museums, kayaking and hiking. “

Thank you Carol and Pedro for finding us through this article! We look forward to welcoming you to Tybee this fall!

The Sound of Music Sing-a-Long at the Hollywood Bowl

I am here in LA visiting my sister to celebrate her 50th birthday. We have all kinds of plans – First up — we are going to the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow night (Friday) for the Sound of Music Sing-a-Long.
The Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world and has a seating capacity of just under 18,000. It is the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922 and also has seen such luminary artists as Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Elton John.
Tomorrow night, the Bowl is transformed into the world’s largest outdoor movie theater. It’s a wonderful evening and only happens once every year or so. The Sound of Music is shown on a huge screen and everyone sings along to every song. We are given goody bags upon arrival filled with props (hey – afterall, this is LA) to use during the movie. A favorite – when Capt. Von Trapp kisses Maria for the first time, we have poppers to pull (you know – those little poppers people pull a string and confetti shoots out). Imagine 18,000 people singing together in the Hollywood Hills while confetti flies everywhere.
I can’t wait to experience the fun! What a great way to start my sister’s birthday celebration!!!
So look for pictures of our evening…… And after that — it’s off to Vegas! VIVA LAS VEGAS….. And although they say “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” — won’t apply to us. Our Big 50 birthday celebration will be posted all over my blog!

My journey to the Left Coast

I haven’t traveled on an airplane since last November. I started my journey out of Atlanta on the only airline I fly- Delta Air Lines ( except for British Airways when I’m lucky enough to fly overseas). I felt like one of the people we road warriors used to secretly laugh at- you know the people who you truly wondered how they got through life on a daily basis… sorta seemed lost in the terminal, couldn’t figure out how to put their stuff in the overhead bin, would ask the flight attendants for 50 things.

First thing I discovered, after almost 20 years I’m no longer a Delta Medallion flier. Those of you who travel regularly know what at shock that was to me. I had completely forgotten my status had expired last year. I guess driving past the Savannah International Airport doesn’t count as a trip to earn miles.
Out of pure habit, when I went to the ticket counter to ask to put myself on the upgrade list or to ask for a bulk head seat, the lady looked at me like I was crazy. She said as nicely as she could I was not a medallion. I had completely forgotten. So I said to her, well I guess an upgrade to first class is really out to the question. She gave me that pity look that they give to everyone who doesn’t fly much.

However the airline gods were looking out for me and somehow the seat they gave me was a sorta bulkhead! Not the real thing, but no one ahead of me and an aisle seat. And that’s when the poor pitiful traveler came out. I had my headphones to plug in, found what i thought was the plug, touched the little individual tv to turn it on ( When did they put tv’s at all the seats in coach????) and nothing…. So I asked the flight attendant for help, she pulls out my plug and plugs it into my seat, not my neighbors.. Oh well. But then the magic started. Real time, live tv 36,000 feet in the air! 20 plus channels!Reality TV! Bravo! HGTV! Food Network! CNN! Even Brian Williams and the NBC Nightly News! ( but no MSNBC and Keith Obermann– that would have been asking for too much I guess). My other observations- the food we used to complain about they now charge to serve you ( under fancy names but still the same food- I can tell) and PEOPLE BUY THE FOOD! And Enjoy!

Those Delta Pilots took us clear across the country without any problem, we landed in LAX , luggage arrived as well and my travel adventure has begun! I’ll be sharing with everyone tommorrow!
