Mermaids in Our Midst: Barb Ogden

This week, our Mermaid is near and dear to all of us at Mermaid Cottages. Barb Ogden has been with us here on Tybee for a few years now, and in that time, has not only been a friend but has become a part of our family. Barb left her career in financial services to care for her mother, then moved to Tybee, and she and her two Corgies have been an important part of our lives ever since!
As far as Mermaid Cottages, Barb has always gone above and beyond in every aspect of her work. From guest services to reservations, networking to logistics, there’s nothing Barb can’t do! She’s been especially helpful in coordinating and volunteering with our Mermaids Give Back efforts.
Barb has decided to step back for some more time for herself and family, and we want to tell her just how much we love and appreciate her and everything she’s done here at Mermaid Cottages and on Tybee. Barb, you are a wonderful person and friend, and we are so glad to claim you in our family of Mermaids!
Thankfully though, Barb is going to continue volunteering with us in our Mermaids Give Back events, so we won’t be in complete Barb-withdrawal! Barb, we wish you all the joy you so richly deserve…and all the laid-back, sand-in-your-shoes Tybee Time you can handle! We love you!

Live Like a Local: Mermaids Give Back

It’s that time again! We are planning to be at Tybee’s Oceanside Nursing home for another Mermaids Give Back event, and we’d love to see you there. Spring has sprung here on our lovely island, and Easter is right around the corner. Come join all the mermaids and mer-men as we make paper-mâché eggs with the residents at Oceanside. We want to celebrate everything wonderful about Spring and bring a smile to some very special people while we’re at it!

If you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you! We will be at Oceanside Nursing Home (located at 77 Van Horne Street) today, March 23rd, at 3:15 p.m. and also Thursday and Friday, March 24th and 25th, at 2:15 and 2:30 p.m. respectively. Please plan to join us! For more information, please call 912.658.1550 or email diane@mermaidcottages.com. All you need to bring is yourself, a smile, some old newspapers, and maybe a friend or two! If you can’t make it today, please feel free to join us on one or both of the other two days. We hope to see you there to help us celebrate Spring and get the Easter season hopping (sorry, I had to!) as Mermaids Give Back to the Tybee community!

Say NO To Potty Mouths!

Remember the good old days when all we had to worry about was how many frogs we had to kiss before we found our prince?
Now, we have to worry about the potty mouths of our pets!
Dr. Oz says puckering up for our pooches can actually make us sick!  He says little puppy kisses can be fine, but we have to remember that most of our dogs are scavengers and let’s face it…they’re not always too particular about what they put in their mouths!
Toxocara, Salmonella, Guardia, Hookworm, Tapeworm, and many others can be found in the mouths of our pets.  And, Dr. Oz adds that some of our pets’ bad behaviors we ignore could be the cause of household illnesses.  If your pet, especially cats, go outside and walk through yucky stuff and then hop up on your counter tops they are contaminating places where you prepare food.  If you allow your pets to sleep in your bed you have to realize what’s been in their mouths and on their paws is now where you sleep!
What can you do?  Be sure to always wash your hands after handling any animal, don’t let them rummage in garbage or raw meat, wipe/clean their paws when they come in from outside, keep pets off surfaces where you prepare food and always maintain a healthy pet with regular visits to the vet!
For more information about Dr Oz’s recommendations go to www.peoplepets.com!

Mermaid Sighting: Mary Kay Mermaid!

Our good friend and favorite author, Mary Kay Andrews, was hard at work recently! She attended the Scotts Antique Show in Atlanta, and wouldn’t you know it, she spotted a mermaid!

Look at what Mary Kay Andrew's shared with us!

This is one lovely, vintage treasure of the sea! Thanks for sharing her with us Mary Kay, and I know you found many more fabulous things at that show, too. You always do!

Have you spotted a mermaid lately? We’d love to see it! Please send your sighting and maybe a little background about it to diane@mermaidcottages.com. Keep your eyes peeled, because your sighting could end up being our next featured Mermaid! We look forward to hearing from you soon!
